I have the same laptop, bought in 2020. (i5, 1650 model) Upgraded Ram to 16 GB and added additional sata SSD. It's going great. Played most of the recent AAA games in medium to low setttings. Older games can be played in medium to high settings. Started using MacBook pro recently for all programming work but planning to buy Legion 5i Pro once they launch 12th chip models. Great laptop bro.

Yes you are right, for boosting up old laptop performance, fist we need to check the CPU, memory and Hard disk utilisation then OS Architecture.
Depends on utilisation and day to day usage,
1. Need to disassemble laptop or PC and clean all dusts struck in the ventilation and the exhaust fan to reduce the temperature of CPU and GPU.
2. If still no difference, then remove old thermal paste and reapply good Thermal paste.
3. If you are using Mechanical Hard disk, replace it with decent 2.5” Solid state drive depends on your requirement (minimum 240GB for basic users and 480GB or 512 GB for pro users).
4. Buy 2.5” USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 Hard disk enclosure to use the removed mechanical hard disk as external till it reach end of life.
5. You need to see major difference in the laptop performance for basic and medium usage. For advanced user, you can check the existing RAM model and type then add one more similar size RAM. For good performance in reasonable cost, or if you are okay to spend then check what is the maximum RAM compatibility for your laptop and replace existing RAM with Maximum Supported RAM type and size.
For decent and medium performance, approx 7 to 8k will be good spend and for advanced users it will be approx 12 to 15k spend to boost old laptop performance instead of replacing or recycling old PC’s and Laptop’s due to performance issues…
This will save you more cost compared to buying nee one and this upgrade will be withstanding for minimum 2 to 3 years ( depends on usage).
