I am an expert solderer in THT and learning SMT now but your form is wrong, you need to clean the tip of the iron and put only a tad bit of solder in it, then you tin the wire till it's copper is wetted by solder and use flux core solder it's nice and shiny and nice long lasting contact man. After tinning the wire, add some flux to the board tht pins you are bridging, then you heat the wire and the board and leave the iron till both melt and reflow, then hold on the wire and remove the iron. That's it man.
