It’s the duration of the standing ovation that (usually and even then, there are exceptions) says if the work was appreciated or not. 5 minutes is really short - it went on for 22 minutes for Pan’s Labyrinth. Even for things they usually hate (and they hate a lot of things at Cannes), they often will applaud for like 10 minutes so that tells you a lot. Also, many times the standing ovation is more directed towards the actors or directors and the bigger the cast, the bigger the reaction since they show everyone’s reaction after the projection. Some movies that were applauded for a long time were absolutely destroyed by the critics. So really, a standing ovation at Cannes doesn’t always mean anything. Also, let’s not forget that the movies shown at Cannes are often far worse and far more graphic than The Idol because it’s international cinema and many countries are much more okay with nudity, gore and taboo topics on screen than the US. They don’t get outraged by soft core porn.
Also she’s contractually obligated to say nice things about the project during promo. You usually know what really went on behind the scenes and if they really appreciated what they did years later. Never trust anything said during a promo tour. It is always overly positive or even straight up lies.
