  • After many changes and playing my SG for 12 years with different pickup sets it’s time to try one more modification: the Jaydee Monkey pickups, which are similar to the John Birch modified pickups on Tony Iommi’s original SG. Let’s find out if they capture any additional Black Sabbath tone.

    Really cool guitar! I’m willing to bet this sounds more like Tony’s guitar than those $20k custom shops Gibson released last year.

      @riccardorubini3078 Před 3 lety +6

      I bought both. They are both very good pickups, and they actually sound similar, but if you want something closer to the original John Birch's pickups from the 70s, in terms of manufacturing, Jaydee's pickups are the most faithful to the original.

      @lgmx-peacekeeper3204 Před 2 lety +6

      @@riccardorubini3078 They just stuck standard P90s into metal covers, pretty lame if you ask me but it's not surprising for Gibson. The actual John Birch pickups in Tony's guitar have a DCR around 10-12k, JB rewound the P90 hotter with thinner wire to fit more turns onto the Gibson bobbin. Also, the Simplux was originally in the bridge position and the P90 was in the neck.

    Very close Iommi tone, I think the key might be to use your tone a little to darken it a bit, the laneys Iommi seemed to use in the mid 70s seemed very dark he seems why he disabled his tone control to get more treble but in a modern setting with my jcm 800 I tend to darken my sound a little more with my tone knob to get that sort of bassy throatiness Iommi had

    I know this is the pickup configuration in the monkey guitar as it exists today but from 1970 to at least 1974, Tony Iommi was using the Simplux in the bridge position and the P90 in the neck. This can be seen in various concert photographs of the era, most notable is the pic of Tony on the back cover of Vol 4. I don't know when they were switched around or why but it definitely was after 1970-74, ie. the classic era Sabbath tone everyone is trying to replicate. Just count the pole pieces of the neck pickup (the bridge pickup is usually obscured Tony's picking hand), it's 6, not 9.

    • @TheSterlingSound
      @TheSterlingSound  Před 2 lety

      Yes but I’m not sure how accurate these pickups are to the original. It won’t be very different.

    • @lgmx-peacekeeper3204
      @lgmx-peacekeeper3204 Před 2 lety +1

      @@TheSterlingSound If they read in the DCR range of 9-10k instead of the 7.8k to 8.2k of a stock Gibson P90, those are the specs of the original Birch pickups. The critical difference between the Simplux and the rewound P90 is that the 9 pole pieces will have a higher inductance than the 6 in the P90. Even if the coils, magnets and overall construction of each pickup were 100% identical, the Simplux will sound darker due to the difference in the inductance.

    • @TheSterlingSound
      @TheSterlingSound  Před 2 lety +1

      @@lgmx-peacekeeper3204 it’s an interesting thought. I’ll swap them around once. The 6 pole is pretty bright indeed. The neck pickup is just super smooth and juicy.
