    One of the biggest things is, people moving to Canada and going to Toronto or Vancouver as the default option, being the "main" city, or "most opportunities". However, that's like someone trying to get over to the US and starting up in New York...
    It's hard enough to establish yourself in a new country, and new home, let alone trying to do it in the most financially pressing version of it. Best bet is to find your feet in somewhere simpler, and much more affordable, even if a smaller town, and once you're on top of things, can consider the move if you still REALLY want to go there...

      Sir, while this is theoretically great advice and I highly urge people moving here to adhere to it, I want to talk about another demographic. I can tell you that even if you start out in a smaller city, if you are in a decent career or major in school, it’s hard to not want to live in the epicentre of the potential opportunities. My cousin studied in Halifax (Dalhousie) and got a $70k job out of school, but then got offered an internship at Google in Toronto that paid him more than $55/hour for 8 months. He had never visited Toronto but after that internship, he despises the idea of moving back to Halifax. I think while it’s not the biggest demographic, the talented young people in engineering, finance and tech won’t stay in Canada unless it’s Toronto (or Montreal if they speak some French, maybe Vancity if they are avid outdoorsmen but same issues). Especially once they’ve traveled to major cities in the world. We really don’t have anything better to offer. (Other than the great TO). And I’d hate for this demographic to brain drain to the US, like I had to a few months ago.

      @@ChasingBogeys - For sure, people with the security of professional level employment have greater opportunities in those places, and the ladies of Make That Change said you can actually save more and live better in Toronto if that's the case because earning potential and opportunity is greater, but this isn't the case for probably 95% of people immigrating (at least in the beginning).

There are some downsides like it’s boring here in my opinion and brutally cold. But im lucky to get my PR faster after just 1 year program and landed a job after 1 month.

    Great presentation. I moved to Toronto for my first job in 1975 and never left. I travelled all over for work, but it always felt great to return to Toronto.
    It is a pretty good place to live if you are wealthy. There are some awesome neighborhoods and some great parks. I live near the Humber river in a quiet well treed neighborhood with miles of nature trails and a short trip to the airport. And uber wealthy people from all over the world do come to live here. It is not for the average income. I love the diversity and access to food from around the world. OTOH, I sometimes wonder why I put up with the congestion and the cost even in retirement.
    I think the only reason to move to Toronto is to chase that perfect job that pays well. You live here to develop your network for your career and as a great base to travel for work.
    Then if you have the resources, you stay to enjoy your neighborhood.
    I lived for a while in Boston's Back Bay. Wonderful. But equally expensive and congested. And there we would park the car and walk. In Toronto, travel is all by car.

    Just finished up my 1st year here in Toronto as a student. Now looking to focus on my career! Gotta say, I not only agree but FEEL every point made in this video.
    Especially the one about the TTC. I use the street cars the most and I NEVER expect things to go smoothly. There's always something going out of service, arriving way too late and even when the TTC itself works fine (very rare) there's some random construction going on or there's a huge event like TIFF that's closes off like 100 stops so you have to either walk or find another way to get to your destination.

    My son has lived in Toronto for the past two years and more, Alho he ia an American trained Engineer and with a MBA from Schulich business school, He found it tough to fetch himself a job that he was looking for, although, He has aligned himself to get a high paying job in the future, I have been to Toronto four times and I live in Mumbai India, When I visited Toronto first in 1992, Toronto was not so crowded as it is now, the infrastructure is showing the wear and tear, I would love to see the rest of Canada. I already have my airline ticket ready which is open for six months, I will have to extend it .I hope I will travel to Canada ....no no not in the winters but after April and before October .
    it sure is scary to travel by the train
    It was indeed shocking to see beggars on the train and unruly people shouting at others and I feared if the person was carrying any weapon on him to harm people
    not to forget the junkies and the homeless people, it adds to our pessimism and negative view.

    Tom Tom still exists!
    I’m from Toronto and have lived all over the world and I still love the city when I’m home. But I extend that love to the narrow band of life that can be afforded if you live down town and don’t drive. At this point, this functionally means you have to be pretty wealthy. My family member bought a house for 300 k in 2005 and it’s market value is now in the range of 2 million. This is insane…
    Every time I’m back my mind is blown by how dysfunctional traffic has become and I lived in South Asia and South East Asia. Additionally, renting is insanely expensive and I live in Switzerland and think this.
    All that said, Toronto is a food capital of the world. And there is a good cultural scene going on. You just have to live on one of the few subway or dedicated LRT rails, be wealthy, and tolerate winter, and never want to drive…
    How did this place get awarded the best city to live in so many times 😅??? But seriously, I wish I could move back. But not on a professor’s salary!

    I'd advise viewers to take this video with a grain of salt. Most of the issues highlighted - high living costs, competitive job markets, and challenges in transportation and urban lifestyle - are common to nearly all major metropolitan cities, not just Toronto. These cities, including Toronto, offer a wealth of opportunities, cultural diversity, and professional growth that often outweigh these urban challenges. If you want to avoid all these issues, you’ll have to go to a small city where there often aren’t very many jobs.

    Average salary in Vancouver is just a smidge above 69k, but you'll also wanna make six-figures to have a full comfortable life. Our downtown peninsula is quite busy, in fact it's the most densely populated neighbourhood in Canada, but easy to escape if you want some tranquility. I'd also caution people moving to Vancouver, but if they're adamant on the west coast, one of the metro areas would be a good place to start.

    Is there ANY place in Canada that Canadians would recommend? I know some talk about "lifestyle". I think "survival" might be a better argument. No place in Canada is worth the price that you have to pay. Whether you want to live in a big city or a small town, you can find a similar place in the USA or other countries for much less.

    • @ChasingBogeys

      Yep I had to do the same a few months ago. Was making “great” money in Toronto but refused to live a lifestyle three levels below everyone else at that income in the US. When I say lifestyle, I don’t mean anything extravagant but buying decent groceries, going out to decent dinners, doing activities with friends, occasional travel etc. I can tell you that nobody in the US at a similar income level was discussing budget, real estate and immigration after every two sentences (atleast in the two cities I’ve spent time in so far - NYC and San Diego). We are all struggling with inflation etc, but Toronto (CA) seems to not have a plan or change of pace. I really hope we can move back at some point and not need to be crazy rich, because I would’ve lived in Dubai or Mumbai if I wanted such a huge gap between different economic classes. It’s heartbreaking.

    And people like to throw shade on boring, little, old Ottawa. Really?
    Seriously, I’ve lived my adult life in Ottawa and thought decades ago…I’m retired now…that Toronto would have been ideal. I just visited TO again and came to realise that I would never want to live there. The older I get the less chaos I want in my life. And to be honest, while I made good money , and my pension is much better than most, I could not afford the lifestyle I want in TO. (It’s simply not worth what you pay.) So, it’s a fab place to visit but that’s about it. It used to be said that the best thing about Ottawa was the train to Montreal (substitute Toronto if you wish). Now all I can say is the best thing about Toronto is the train to Ottawa.

      I lately visited Ottawa, I found it nice and family friendly city. BUT homeless &drug-addict persons are everywhere, it shocked me a lot in a known safest city in the world ! I think it is a serious issue now in all big cities in Canada. It is crucial to act before the situation would go out of control. I thought that homeless were numerous in Paris underground But being in OTTAWA and reading some bloggers feedback, I realized that it is a reel problem in North American big cities!

    • @MakeThatChange
      @MakeThatChange  Před 8 měsíci +1

      agreed we were also shocked to see homeless people just a few streets away from parliament... I thought if all else fails, at least the capital city is kept well taken care of.

      @@MakeThatChange yes and I do believe that it pays to get to know the cities as much as you can. Each ha sits own vibe and character. I've been to Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. All 3 are different and I don't feel that I would want to live there though I don't mind visiting Montreal. Furthermore Ive experienced Canadian winters and can handle it. I once drove from Fredericton to Toronto stopping over Montreal, in winter and got caught in a white out blizzard on the way back. Not recommended. Have also taken a train to Montreal from Halifax. Quite pleasant. Passed through beautiful Quebec City. I miss Canada a great deal and intend to migrate when conditions in Canada improve

    toronto does not define Canada but Asia ( India ) Define the whole world ? You mean China and Inda ... plus crimes, no internet in the subway, people are sharing houses to survive , USA Car culture , Toronto is the only city in Canada that includes cities as far as 140 km away ( Niagara ) on the Greater Toronto which does not make any sense .. Toronto has also a lot of homeless , crimes in public transport , horrible old subway and the city has no soul ,

    lol! Good Lord .... the same old cliche that Toronto has "no soul." That tired old chestnut has been used by Montrealers since the 1930s. Toronto is the most multicultural city in the world with plenty to see and do .... "no fun" in Toronto lol! Your video has lost all credibility.

    • @MakeThatChange
      @MakeThatChange  Před 10 dny

      Funny you say that. I used to think that too, until I traveled more and realized how much Toronto lags behind other North American metropolitan cities. It’s all about perspective.

    • @paulirish7955
      @paulirish7955 Před 10 dny +1

      I've travelled extensively ... (was a travel writer for a while). European cities are great ... as far as North America cities go Toronto holds it's own ... yes, my perspective is different ... old enough to have been established for a while so the cost of Toronto doesn't affect me. But as far as "transactional romance" and "no fun" "no soul" ... well, as I said ... old chestnuts that have become tiring. Montreal's Old Town is magnificent ... but the rest of the city is nothing special ... I was there last summer ... had a great time. Enjoy your time in the GTA ... I grew up in Willowdale, lived in the city core for about 15 years and now I'm in Whitby.
