      Hey, had a quick question. Had someone ask me if the owlbot color profile has less dynamic range than the c-log or wide dr profiles. I told them I didn’t see that much of a difference. Can you shed any light on this?

    • @Owlbot
      @Owlbot Před rokem +1

      @@alexshotthese OWLCOLOR for the C100 is, at it's base, still Clog so the DR is the same. The black point has been dropped a bit so you might perceive that there's less info in the shadows (maybe "half a stop" or whatever) but based on tests that level in the image was just noise anyway so having it be cleaner took priority.
      Functionally the DR is identical.

    I love my C100 M2. It's just a workhorse with small files that grade remarkably well. That said, the detail compared to 4K is clearly lacking and the 8 bit 4.2.0 codec has limitations, but the ability to shoot practically all day with 2 batteries and tiny files make it hard to dismiss this great camera. Solid for presentations and concerts. I'm not going to sell mine even when I upgrade to 4K - just such a dependable camera with really useful image quality even in 2022. FYI I shoot Wide DR all the time now.

      I'm a photographer, not a true videographer, but purchased a C100 Mark II for wedding clients that want video. Before purchasing, I'd hardly ever engaged video mode on any of my too many to count DSLRs. I was amazed at how simple the C100 was to operate. Fortunately, I have an associate that does the color grading for me. It doesn't bother me that it shoots only 1080, and it's a good 1080. I think 4K is overkill for many projects. And, imho, the average person, unless told or looking at exif data, cannot visually tell 1080 from 4k. Just like they can't differentiate a 12MP image from a 45mp image.

    • @alexshotthese

      Absolutely agree with this statement. That’s why I still tell people to look into this camera. I have a 65in 1080p TV and I tell my brother constantly you can’t tell the difference between 4K or 1080p when you sit at a certain distance so there really isn’t even a need for 4K TV.

    Great video! I agree with all of your points. Another advantage that the C100 Mark II has over the Blackmagic is autofocus. It's a very basic system but it is usable as long as you keep your subject centered in the frame. I am thinking of adding a Blackmagic camera to my kit eventually. I always wanted to try one.

    • @alexshotthese
      @alexshotthese  Před rokem +3

      A trick to the AF is programming the grip button to lock AF. So let’s say you’re filming an interview and want to position them left or right side of the frame. Use AF to get your focus, lock it, and pan tripod to your desired spot.
      I love what blackmagic do for the indie filmmaking community.

    at the moment I'm editing footage shot on 3 x C100mkii's, a Pocket 4K and a Pocket 6K Pro...it was 2 performances of La Boheme, each performance around 2 hours...both the 4K and 6K were shooting at 4K and of course the C100mkii's at 1080p...we will only be exporting out at 1080p so the BMPCC's will be downsized either by cropping or scaling...but the file sizes! one performance from the 6K = 435Gb (high bitrate used evidently), from the 4K = 83GB and from the C100mkii = 21GB...they are colour matching pretty well and the C100 footage (both wide and close up) doesn't look out of place against the BMPCC's as far as sharpness and dynamic range goes either...love my C100mkii's...I also use them for artist interviews and some events...XLR's with decent preamps makes audio not a hassle...feed straight from the desk or using wireless lav mics into camera works for me.

    Pocket 4k is more like 12 stops when taking into consideration the signal to noise ratio. Just like I saw with your image, the shadows were muddy on the pocket 4k. I'd say the pocket 4k has maybe 0.5-1 stop over the canon c100.

      CZcams compression doesn’t help either.

    • @shueibdahir
      @shueibdahir Před 11 měsíci

      @@alexshotthese CZcams doesn't compress the image that much if you know which codec to use. H.264 and especially H.264 are pretty bad. Try Prores 422 or even DNXHR. They're more likely to come out clean.
      But what's much more important is the source codec. Pocket has a much cleaner codec than the c100 but it would be much more even if you use an external recorder.
      So record ProRes and export in prores. That should keep the image fairly clean. Do not use LUTs for LOG. Those muddy up the image. Color Space Transform to transform LOG to Rec.709/BT.1886. You'll be suprised by how much better the C100 looks after that.
      Also look into the middle grey of C-Log and the IRE range of skintones. If you get those right, the image comes out phenomenal.
      Resolution and color depth doesn't matter that much if you know how the camera OETF works. The blackmagic is a lot more forgiving yes but not necessarily miles better

    Thanks for this video.... I've asked this question of other cinematography CZcamsrs so I'll ask it here as well...QUESTION 🎥 I keep hearing it stated that the C100 is "great for shooting documentaries and talking head interviews"...but implying that, somehow, the image quality of the C100 is too "video-ish" and not cinematic looking enough, to make a proper narrative cinematic short film.. those who say this ultimately point to black magic cameras as the only way to make a movie that "looks cinematic enough for narrative" with a camera in this general price range... Others have stated that the C100 IS Cinematic, in its own way... Can you comment on this? I'm definitely leaning towards trying to purchase the c100 due to the MANY positive aspects of this camera, ...IMHO while image quality is extremely important in making a narrative film, having a camera that's enough of a Workhorse to actually HELP get the movie done in a relatively quick time with as little technical roadblocks as possible, also is a major Boon I think towards the CREATION of Cinema for lower budget filmmakers ... AKA if your movie never gets done, then you have no Cinema ....but this question of "cinematic-ness", or an implied lack thereof, of the C100, keeps coming up for some reason. 🎥

      Hey J Kapp, thanks for watching and commenting.
      The C100mkii is a CINEMA CAMERA. Don’t listen to other people calling it “videoish”. It make look that way to other people because they’ve maybe seen a lot of “video” looking footage from it, but ultimately it will come down to lighting. Go watch Film Riot’s short film “U.F.Oh Yeah” and tell me that doesn’t look cinematic. Shot on the C100mkii.

Obviously the work around is shooting 60fps in normal recording and then interpreting the footage to 24fps, but it’s just another unnecessary step.

The RAW out of the C200 is stunning, but the file sizes are massive.
      If you need full-size XLR ports then the c200 is the clear winner. If you want built in ND’s then, again, c200 is the winner. Pros and cons to each, but if you’re going off image quality alone then pocket 4K everyday!

    C100MK2 has 14 stops. shoot in log than send it to davinci youll see.

      It was always advertised as 12 stops of dynamic range. I’ll find it very hard to believe a camera this old has better stops of DR than the pocket 4k.

    It was an 8yr old camera vs a 4yr old camera

      @alexshotthese  Před rokem

      Well the 4yr old camera is still punching well above its class. Definitely was when it was released and still is today.

    i can recognize bmpcc footage from the moon. That green tint and pink blacks IR issue hard to unsee.

      That’s great! I changed the tint in camera as I felt it also was a little too green. As far as IR pollution, I’ve never really had an issue with that due to using higher end ND filters that cut out IR contamination.

      Thank you! It’s still a workhorse of a camera and it’s fun to use. Definitely go used! A lot of them are still in great shape used.
