    800T should've never been allowed to be trademarked in the first place. For one, it is descriptive. And they didn't even come up with it. Someone unfortunately will have to challenge that and that costs money.

    • @c.augustin
      @c.augustin Před 10 měsíci +4

      It is not that simple. "800T" alone should not be possible to trademark, at least not here in Europe, but "CineStill 800T" would be completely fine. And we have to be careful to distinguish between TM and (R) (the former is easier to get, as far as I know). Yes, this is a case for specialized lawyers.

    • @JanneRanta
      @JanneRanta Před 10 měsíci

      @@c.augustin They are not going after people using "Cinestill 800T". Just 800T. It is scummy to even apply for that trademark. Knowing that they weren't first to use it and that it is descriptive. It is extra level of evil to then go after small competition who are less likely to have the money to defend themselves.

    • @segzeeman7356

  • @VariTimo
    @VariTimo Před 10 měsíci +67

    I cannot understate how much CineStill can go screw themselves for this. The only reason they have the trademark is because Kodak didn’t trademark it before. Kodak had an 800T in the Vision line. But they never trademarked it because they knew it was descriptive. But the big thing that pisses me off is that they act like a company for the people, with a subpar product and unnecessarily high prices. They don’t make film. They get uncut rolls from Kodak without the rem yet and let Ilford or Foma cut them. That’s their contribution. And their films aren’t even the speed they say. There is no 800T! It’s a 500 ASA film, the supposed push only applies compared to the 500T in ECN2. In C41 it just reaches normal density.

      Corporate lawyers ..... the hyenas of modern times. I would say scum but that would be maligning scum.

    • @kriseric1
      @kriseric1 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Agreed, this is disappointing to hear. Normally words like 50D or 500T would be considered descriptive as they refer to the characteristics of the product and do not indicate origin. However I suppose if a competitor was using that descriptive language alongside a deceptively similar name, like "Cinestyle 800T", using similar colors and packaging, that might invite a trademark claim.

    • @wv_
      @wv_ Před 10 měsíci

      I mostly agree with you but there’s some inaccurate statements here. I shoot vision3 500T alongside 800T and there is an obvious difference in sensitivity caused by the removal of the remjet. Maybe it’s 700 or 650 but definitely not 500ISO. Second, I’ve shot reto project, ffp, reflex and cinestill and although I think the trademark issue is disgusting and I’ve had a couple of quality issues, their product is generally much higher quality in terms of its consistency compared to others who roll vision3. Cinestill are wankers obviously, and it seems incurable but if you say BS then the rest of your argument is undermined

    • @VariTimo
      @VariTimo Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@wv_ Actually you don’t know what you’re talking about. The lack of rem jet doesn’t nothing to the film speed, even CineStill have said that. What does something to the speed is the cross processing in different developers. ECN2 has a lower gamma because it’s designed to be printed onto motion picture print film, which has a higher contrast compared to darkroom paper. So yes, comparing 500T developed in ECN2 to C41 will give you about a 2/3 stop push. But since it’s used for still photography, going through still photography scanners and onto still photography paper and not print film, there is no push. Because C41 films inherently have a higher gamma, since they’re meant to be printed onto flatter darkroom paper. So if you want your image to reach full density compared to other C41 films like Portra you’d need to expose it at the speed the original ECN2 film has. Exposing at CineStill’s box speed is gonna give you a 2/3 underexposure.
      And honestly man, this “rem jet removal increases speed” is the most self generated internet brain frat you can come up with. Don’t tell people their argument is undermined and bull shit because of this. It’s just some crap someone with no understanding of the mechanics of film came up with and people have been blindly repeating it ever since. That’s not how halation works and that’s not film works. But I mean, most people also think only CineStill has halation.

    As others have pointed out, "800T" should not have been allowed to be trademarked as it is descriptive. Imagine if Campbells trademarked "tomato soup"

    800T is literally just a discription of the film. It should NOT be available to trademark.
    That's like Trademarking Ortho or 400 Pan.
    Or Toyota Trademarking 4 cylinder and suing Honda for describing their engine.
    It's a ridiculously bad look for Cinestill and especially for a company that is a film re-packager themselves.

    Adox news are great, and glad they will make 120 soon after so long. Unlike others (CS) they have a fantastic transparency and many very relevant projects.
    Glad too that there is, even too much promising advancements in alternative C41. Inoviscoat (orwo?) have hit the 5? year mark of iterating color (Metropolis-NC-Retro 92) and a good film is quite welcome; a bit of Agfa legacy comeback. That with the side surprise of Ferrania. Interesting!
    Reflx labs are respooling Aerocolor in 220. I wish, just for trips, that Kodak would finish an occasional batch of Portra 400 in this format! Wonder if their 220 spooler is mothballed.
