Got it, after trying with an old router for years. The secret for me was to change the IP of the router first with DHCP on, then save it, go back in and disable the DHCP server. Trying to switch off the DHCP first in my router hid all the router ip settings. Sneaky ISP trying to lock down their gear. Hopefully this helps someone!
Same problem here
Many thanks for this video. I followed your advice and now I too have a great signal all around my house. I truly appreciate you taking the time to do this video and assist me. All the best, Mike
EXACTLY what I was looking for - with excellent animations and stuff. This is just tremendously good! Great job.
Thank you for a simple, yet thorough explanation. Great quality video.
Someone else (thank you Ryan!) earlier made this observation BUT IT IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT. On some old routers, the FIRST STEP ought to be to change the IP address of the old router, THEN log in to this NEW IP address, THEN complete the setup including the deactivation of DHCP. My old Actiontec 1000a would not allow changing the IP address if DHCP was deactivated.
Video was a great help. After setting up my old router according to the guide, I realized it already came with a pre-setup AP mode anyway. LOL!
Better explained than other videos trying to explain the same thing. I will try this out. Thanks!
"I only have macs. . . not to boast"
like having inferior tech is something to boast about
I agree with you but came to the comments to find these trolling comments🤣

As an IT professional I beg to disagree.
Haha!
The funny thing is that ever one who uses a computer for a living just rolled their eyes at your comment, and every one that plays video games and scrolls facebook just got a woody. Weird isn't it, but hey, you do you boss, I'm sure you have your reason for disliking mac products... even if the reason is "I don't have an actual need for a computer as a production device so macs are bad." And just to clarify, I earn my money on a Mac, and I play my games on my Alienware. I would use the Alienware for everything if I could... but as I said earlier... the people that use Macs for a living already know the next part.
Thanks buddy this method worked for me... apart from all the other videos I had seen, this one was the easiest to follow yet efficient.
I have already do this and it works very well, if you have an old router with wifi this is very worth doing.
This was brilliant !!! I just used my old router for this and it works great !! The only inconvenience part is arranging a lan-cable long enough to reach the other room but it works !!
Did you test the speed with the 2nd router to see whether there is any drop mbs when using the wifi?
@@Massud3O3 yes. I tested it. Non perceivable difference. Most of the time, it was as good as the main router
is it possible to do without lan cable?
@@JADPB11 yes, it's kind of at the start but you can use powerlines to get the signal to your second location and then plug that into the second router
Your explanation is clearer than crystal
Okay Ray Mak, this is NOT a meme video, you have NO BUSINESS BEING HERE AS WELL
In Australia its called ice
So like air
this worked for me. Thank you so much.... earlier i was just connecting 2 routers with lan cable. internet was working but i think they were conflicting too much.... internet was fluctuating...i was not able to watch a full video with out loading... i was so frustrated this helped a lot. thank you.
Best tutorial on CZcams ever
Brilliant. Worked first time. Very glad I did not depose of that old router.
I used a powerline starter kit, so setting up the second router in this way was nevertheless necessary and thanks for the useful video
Thanks so much for this video! Helped me out heaps. I was going to by an expensive wifi extender for $70.00 then I found and old one on Facebook markets for $15 and this video helped me set it up. Thanks!
Great to hear!
Helped me set up an access point in no time! Thanks! 🎉
THANK YOU SO MUCH, VERY BRIEF AND DIRECT,. HELPOS ME A LOT, THE FIRST VIDEO I WATCHED DOESNT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT DISABLING THE NAT SETTING, THATS WHY MY MODEMS GOT CONFLICTS AND SOMETIMES ONLY ONE MODEM HAS A CONNECTION,. THANKS
This is so awesome. Thank you for this. you saved my life. My wife can't thank me enough.
Very understandable and very helpful, thank you.
DHCP !!! That's what I needed to change !
Man, I keep getting back to this video because it's just well made.
My current setup is like this:
1st router that's connected to the landline or whatever and get access to the internet first.
2nd router connected with a long cable to my room.
3rd router that is in my sibling's room and is connected to 2nd router with a cable.
I JUST set up the 3rd router for some specific reasons but it created some problems. Like, on my 2nd router, all 4 ethernet ports were occupied:
1. cable coming from 1st router
2. My PC
3. cable going to 3rd router
4. Xbox One
For some reason, if I had all 3 of them connected, 1 of them would not have access to the internet even though it said they were connected and had no other problems. If I changed the order at when I plugged in each cable, a different device would lose access to the internet. I even changed that router to a different old 4th router but nothing. I knew I had missed a step so I came back here to find the solution and it was to disable the DHCP !!!
Thanks for your video...it was very helpful and I could setup 2nd router as extender
Well-paced guide with good visuals and explanations. Cheers
Last time I only get 10Mbps using other tutorials, now I'm getting full 100Mbps. I missed the manual IP assignment on the second router, got it from this tutorial.
Excellent explanation. Thank you for getting straight to the point and explaining it so well
Thank you for this video. Very very helpful
Litterly watching this 7th time. Every time when I need to set my router up
Great video thank you. Have been looking for a solution and this looks like it will provide better speeds than MESH. Could I connect the 2 routers via home plugs to achieve the same result?
Thanks for this quick and very informative video just saved me from buying a WiFi extender
Thanks for the tip
If I want to create a third router as an access point as well do I need to run ethernet from the original or can I simply run it from the secondary?
Best explanation among them all
Is it the same process to connect things from the 2nd router via ethernet cable?
This is exactly what I want to do. Cheers.
Quick question, will it work with 2 diferent brand wifi router? My new main wifi router is cisco. My old one is TP link.
Nice advice, love it 👍🏽🙏🏽👊🏽
So do you still have to use the ethernet cable between the 2 routers?
This was so helpful..thanks
I would also like to know if this can be done without an Ethernet cable. Thanks
yes it can but ethernet cable is recommended
Did you use a straight through or crossover cables?
Thanks the download speed and ping became WAY better
will it work if I have a cable switch in between? main router +switch+ second router.. please advice.
Does the Ethernet have to stay plugged in after setup for this to work?
awesome video! thank you!!!! life saver during this lockdown!
Could you please explain why the ethernet cable should be connected in a Lan port of the second router and not in the Wan port?
I think i get that it is because you want it as a repeater, but i just want to be sure.
very helpful! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Can you use ethernet ports on both routers for other things?
>Tech guy
> Uses macs almost exclusively
Jk lol
lolol
And he considered that as a brag, LMFAO
Thanks.. really helpful
worked 100%, thanks mate.
You're welcome!
thanks it was very helpful
Can you use your old/ 2nd router without an ethernet cable?
Can this be made wireless connection, using wds bridging? If you do know how to do that for TP link NADSL +2 router as repeater please help out.
should I use the same channel for both routers?
Thanks so much for this video! It saved us money by allowing us to make an old "EE Smart Hub" into a repeater. I can now get a great connection anywhere in the flat. The only downside that ive found is that when I change the IP address, I can no longer access the second router settings. My only workaround for this, was to make changing the IP the very LAST thing I did before saving my changes.
Now it works, I just have to pray that I don't need to reconfigure anything soon. :D
Awesome. It's good to hear that :)
So is there no way to do this without running an ethernet cable? Is there a way to do this with the secondary router totally wireless other than its power supply?
After configuring 2nd route using the same SSID. other devices connect with the wifi having an issue recognized and show limited connection. Not sure what went wrong.
Can you give me the name of the Wi-Fi analyzer your using., ie name and developer. Do they have this apple program that can be used on an iPad?
Sunday funday project, it's also Sunday here in Sydney.
Amazing, thanks a lot m8
Can these configuration be done on a smartphone?
Ok so iam using a wifi-extender which allows me to boost a Wifi network to the rest of my house. By turning a router into an AP, i will always have to use a network cable? I think in my case i should better use 2 wifi-extender's don't you think?
is there a way to config the old router to receive wifi signals from the new router (instead of an Ethernet cable) to extend your network?
will this effect my wired connection speed??
can you do it without a ethernet cable between the 2 router ???
Can you connect the second router to a lan cable in the wall or do you have to connect both routers to eachother
its the same thing
Is powerline /PoE reliable? Never used it.
How do I connect the same model of secondary router wirelessly?? Is it possible or not?
It defies the purpose to use a long ethernet cable, most people trying to extend their internet do not have the option to run a long cable hence the reason why they are looking for a this solution. If you can run a long cable between two floors might as well use a switch and hard wire everything.
will this be the same as having a mesh network? will the other lan ports still work on both routers in case anyone wants to work plugged in instead via wifi? thanks in advance.
These are the same 2 routers im using! OMG
can I use a usb to Ethernet adapter? and also will a cat 7 wire work?
Perfect explaination, but i still ran into a problem
It works for a couple of seconds, on my old router. And then it stops working.
I wasn’t able to do the NAT thing, but the rest i think i did fine.
I hope you can help me :)
so you can only use that as wifi extender you cannot connect your device to the 2nd router using Ethernet cable only through wifi.?
Can I do this using a powerline adapter with a 2nd router?
Do we need to make a reserved DHCP pool for primary router and assign an IP address from that pool to the secondary router so the primary router will not assign the same IP address to a different client that may cause IP conflict?
So, after we setup the secondary router this way, I could access my network harddisk connected to Batcave, when I'm connected to Batcave2? I'm new at this . . .
yes
can you connect both routers with a power line ?
Thats great...but only disadvantage is it requires cable connection with old one. And extenders avl in market can work without wire.
Hi I have a question, I have a P2P ISP provided router and can't upgrade it so I want to use a dual band Asus router as a repeater close by. Is it possible to use a dual band router as a repeater??
can I connect the second router to the ethernet plug which is connected to the network and not the actual router?

Really helpful video
Can I use an old router from Comcast that I have and don’t use?
I was thinking this vs buying a mesh router, but you need a long ethernet cable, sometimes that's not always practical sadly. Especially over walk/doorways.
Hi I followed the instructions (as best I could anyway) and it seemed to work Ok, but now my main PC wont connect directly to the Internet via the Ethernet port. When I unplug my old router (that I I want to use as extender), it works again...any tips/tricks to fix it?
does it work with both 2.4 GHz and 5GHz connections?
Can I do this AND throw in an Extender/Repeater? I need a whole building covered...
Thank you for this video! your really informative, I have a Question:
I have a Netgear Nighthawk router that I want to connect to a Fios Router as a Access Point,
and in the Nighthawk router settings it has AP mode (Access Point mode) ,
Do I just turn it on enable the AP mode and that's it?? or do I need to do something else in the settings? Thank you.
Did you figure this out? I would think if ap was an option then that would be it.
Change the wifi first to model the original then put it in AP mode........You should be good to go after that
this is genius!
You keep your BT on on Mac? I keep it off if not in use. 😒
Can you connect you PC directly the second router for an ethernet connection? I currently have my PC upstairs hardwired to my downstairs router but might add a second access point in between
i have the same question
@@normalboi1997 to you and anyone else wondering this, the answer is yes. I set my second wireless access point up which I can also directly plug my computer in. Works great
Awesome worked for me!
Did you name them same ssid?
Very clear 👌
can this work on different routers??
Hi and thanks, one question though, instead of using a long cable to attach the second router, can I use powerline adapters that I already have? Thanks again.
Powerline adapters don't typically work well enough for this to be effective. I would use a MoCA 2.5 setup to use existing coaxial cables as ethernet alternative. Can get basically the same speed as ethernet, anywhere in your house. Other videos show how to set this up. I'm about to do it myself.
Thanks very helpful - it worked!! Also, my husband and I are arguing what your accent is (sounds like a mix?!) - can you pls settle the score and tell us :)
It works good. Thanks. But need wireless connection.
Excellent video
