  • Have you heard of the Magic Spoon cereal? It's a healthy cereal that "tastes too good to be true" (or so they say about themselves). Magic Spoon's cereal is high protein, low carb, with 0 g of sugar, gluten free, grain free with natural flavors and over 16,000 5-star reviews! The catch is... it's $10 per box and you can only buy it in packs of four. So for this video, I spend $40 on cereal (so you don't have to) and I'm sharing my honest opinion on whether Magic Spoon is worth the hype (it's not).

It's really just marketing. But it's frustrating that they have to exaggerate how good it tastes and also charge a crazy amount. How this could be worth it at all boggles my mind since even at the most expensive grocery stores, you can get better tasting Keto cereal at a lower price (and with better bulk and loyalty discounts). If they are going to try to compete with an established business at least compare yourself to the business models of your competitors.

When comparing calories per gram compared to regular cereal, it’s basically the exact same as the “regular” kind. I find it kind of odd because one of their marketing points is how many calories it is per serving. Really the only advantage you’re getting out of this is more protein.
But you can easily fix that by mixing whey protein with your cereal…

Just figured a lot of folks could get confused and buy it, then wind up in a lot of pain from trace gluten.

      @@RedRoseSeptember22
It’s a confusion between 2 markets. There is one (I think larger) market is for folks avoiding gluten as mostly a diet fad like Keto or Vegan. They arnt actually going to be hurt by tiny quantities of gluten from some floor residue. They want to cut out gluten, but cutting the quantity down by a factor of a hundred or a thousand is more then good enough for them. The second market is folks needing to avoid gluten for medical reasons. Like celiac which generates a allergic like reaction triggering the immune system to attack the bodies tissues and damaging organs and digestive system. Market one is like vegans. They may prefer not eating meat products, or have some sensitivity to meat fats or whatever, but a tiny bit of meat fat forming a smear on a table top your preparing a Vega dish on is not going to make the vegan customer swell up from inflammation, feel like they were beaten up, and have diarrhea that night.
Given until recently most doctors laughed off the idea of celiac being that big of a thing. It’s not that surprising many companies don’t get that customers really need almost medical grade purity. That say you bake the gluten stuff in one room with one set of cleaned equipment, the normal backing in another with a air barrier (closed doors, no fans cycling air between, etc. or restaurants which do similar and have separate plates etc.
.. or the companies may just do the math and figure market 1 is much cheaper to produce for, and not go to the expense of trying for market 2. Magic spoon may eaither have not realized the different markets, or only going for market 1 now and maybe if they sell enough they can get a totally non gluten production facility and sell certified gluten-free later for market 2

Their website claims 5 servings per box, which they allude to meaning 5 bowls. I tried my damnedest to determine just how many ounces of cereal that really was, but as you can see, it's not much cereal at all. For normal people that bags contain about try bowls of cereal. I'm not a rabbit lol. So in reality you're likely getting a total of 8 bowls of cereal for $40. That's not "$1.95" a bowl, that's $5 a bowl and it's not worth the price regardless, for most people I would venture.

I just tried magic spoon for the first time today and it's good. I mean it tastes very good and it is quite surprising how good it tastes given the fact that it has so little sugar. There is this odd thing with the texture though where it's almost too crunchy. It seems like it can't get soggy. I know that sounds like a good thing but I'm someone who actually likes my cereal to be a bit soggy. I don't want it to be a sloppy mess but I like the heterogeneity of some pieces being soggy and some pieces being crunchy. This though seems to be somehow resistant to getting soggy. But that's not that big of a deal because it still tastes surprisingly good. I will say though that the price is almost a non-starter from the beginning. I mean $10 a box is just... unreasonable.

I am so appreciative of the honest review. I’m very skeptical of these constant positive reviews, and I’ve heard this cereal promoted on so many different podcasts and youtube sites, but it sounded a bit too perfect to be either genuinely tasty or truly healthy. While the ingredients seem mostly okay, this is still a highly processed food, and the sweetener Allulose is fairly new and unstudied. Really, though, it is the lack of simple ingredients that’s troubling to me. Why spend so much for “healthy” cereal that’s made to resemble sugary, overly-processed kids’ cereals in appearance and flavor? The siren call of “high protein, low net carbs” does not necessarily mean it is healthy or part of a balanced diet. Thank you so much for not promoting the hype and for being honest about your experience with Magic Spoon. You rock! 👍🏻

Why they’d choose to resemble things that people are nostalgic over, already have developed a taste for, and would want when deciding what food to buy, is all pretty self explainable.
The rest seems iffy or sketch. Shouldn’t need this damn laundry list of “low this” or “no that”, only a few stark changes would really make it a worthwhile thing for such a cereal, and get people a lot healthier in the long run

@@Jonathan-A.C. I agree with you on the advertising side - folks want to “have their cake and eat it, too,” especially if they are being told that yummy birthday cake is actually super healthy and made for adults, and really good for you. I grew up in a family where our cereal choices were Post Raisin Bran, All-Bran, Shredded Wheat/Wheat-A-Bix, and Malt-O-Meal or Cream of Wheat, so I don’t have the same nostalgia for cereals advertised to kids. My parents weren’t strict about food, it’s just we are what they ate, and that included cereals. We didn’t even get to chew gum unless we were going up in a plane (to help equalize the pressure in our ears). I’m always wary, though, of the way things are advertised by “influencers,” so it’s always nice to find honest reviews of products that are otherwise being promoted by paid shills.

I like magic spoon. I just add sweetners like from whole earth if I want it sweeter. I just add various flavors like cocoa or peanut butter powder or cinnamon in the plan Frosted one, as the flavors are light in tasting sometime. Yet pretty close to Cheerios. I like the Catalina cinnamon too. Could always add some to the magic spoon cereal and some fats like macadamia nuts or avocado oil to the milk.
By the way, if I don’t have the alternative nut milk....I just water down my heavy cream or half and half. I add water, shake it up. Just as good. For years I had skim milk, so it isn’t a big deal. Btw, I first add the water to the milk and shake it up...then add it to the cereal. I don’t add it while the milk is in the bowl with the cereal.

4 boxes should arrive saturday and after seeing your review im not super worried....ive often not had too much in the way of issues with taste when it comes to things like this, i figure it might take some getting used to with the chalky/drywall/whey protein aftertaste but hopefully itll be something i can enjoy when i want a snack that isnt terrible for me...
only real issue is thet price/ammount...per another comment whne someone was doing the math on how much serial is ACTUALLY in the box...they estimated about 8 bowls per 40$...that's really not much, esp considering me who would commonly eat several bowls of more sugary cereals...maybe the aftertaste is a blessing in that area XD

The flavors were OK (cinnamon, maple, fruity and peanut butter were the flavors I picked), but not worth $40, I wouldn't even say worth $20. I tried each flavor once and haven't been back to eat them since. I did get a chuckle about your box comment because my husband said the same thing about them being cheap and flimsy.
