A nunnery was Elizabethan slang for a brothel...he's insulting her.

Oh. My god.
It’s really jaw dropping how well he communicates Shakespeare. He clearly has an understanding of what he’s saying that really sets him apart from a lot of other actors. Incredible performance.
Exactly yes! Thank you
Exactly. The problem with the words of Shakespeare is that we might listen to them, which is a mistake. What Andrew is doing here is painting with words, but the message was non verbal.
Yes. You can feel it coming from his gut. Even though he’s saying he doesn’t care. Amazing.
Doing Shakespeare is pretty much every actor's dream. It is the ultimate honour to be asked to act out his plays.
Someone said this on another scene from this performance, but he makes it look like he is just thinking of the words as he says them, not like he is just reciting learned lines
That’s how it’s supposed to be! That’s how I was taught in all my classical verse classes at university. That Shakespeare characters speak to discover and learn.
He said this in a talk at the Oxford Union! It's a fantastic talk
Yes. You've just described what actors do lol

The timeless genius of Shakespeare's writing is only fully realized to modern audiences when it is communicated with this level of intention and honesty.
Preach
It really is a magical thing about theatre/literature, that the deepest and relatable things to the human experience can be written down four hundred years ago and earnestly be felt by audiences centuries later.

It's one of those moments that absolutely breaks your heart. Ophelia is at her most vulnerable, putting it all out there for the one she loves most. And Hamlet, whether it's his grand plan or not, is treating her like trash to distance himself from her, oblivious to how he is destroying her anyway.
Good point.
At the same time, he’s hurt and angry that she would spy on him for her dad
I’ve always had problems understanding Shakespeare but the way he performs, I completely understand what he’s saying and what is going on. Thank God.
I knew this would happen with him and someone because he is living the words and expressing what they mean it’s just such a good performance
It's amazing. It's as if he was speaking modern English. It's as if the dialogue was written this week.

I know everyone is complementing Andrew and I love him so much he did a perfect job with the character, I loved it, but Jessica was a perfect Ophelia as well. She's my favorite so far, such raw emotions, such anger, such pain and heartbreak... They were all so perfectly evident and so perfectly acted out...
The anger is what made her Ophelia so good👍
to be honest, i think she ate him up. she was incredible and so convincing - packed so much emotion into those few lines!
entirely agreed
I was just thinking how amazing she is! Every time the camera cut to her I was completely lost in the story.

andrew scott captures exactly why i fell in love with hamlet when i first read it. his anger in combination with his sadness and grief is so visceral and terribly relatable. we all act in mad ways when we’re grieving and then traumatized (by your mom marrying your uncle like a month after your dads funeral) and he perfectly captures that feeling of lashing out at everyone when you’re hurting
Andrew Scott definitely understand his character, but Jessica Brown Findlay is pouring SO much emotion into these lines.
Strenght, sadness, pain, all are perfectly portrayed in her expressions and in her eyes. Amazing performance.
this video made me feel as if he had just broken up with me
Wow... my friend in highschool used to say to girls at parties (who were being too* promiscuous), “where is your father? Get thee to a nunnery” ... are you gonna tell me my homie from the block was quoting Shakespeare... get the f out

Idk if he was quoting Shakespeare, what I do know is he was posting cringe

He’s so good. I’ve never been one to understand Shakespeare but the way he performs it, he has made it tangible. Wish I saw whole performance in person
I had this same thought pop up in my head yesterday and that's what led me to search "best shakespeare performance" to end up on this video.
"Why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners?" That sentence stabs my heart.
sinners do go to heaven if truly repentful among other things so that's good
Where can I watch the whole thing? I’ve never been so engrossed in Hamlet before. I love Andrew’s line delivery. It is so honest and unpretentious

Jessica Brown Findlay's stunning performance in this production was the time I've ever really understood Ophelia. Superb, just superb.
this scene always gets me in every hamlet. Both of them portrayed the emotions perfectly in my opinion!
For me is Ophelia' s funeral
andrew is so amazing it's like he's making up the words on the spot instead of from a script, and that's so hard to do with shakespeare
The manner in which he said, "Farewell," made me burst out laughing. It was so... dismissive. Callous in its lack of interest in her reply or reaction. Totally f-ed up!

Andrew is just pure genius
She nailed it no word her expression the look in her eyes as if she is experiencing those feelings in that moment
Hamlet: “Get thee to a nunnery”
Ophelia: “MORIARTY”
I love this. Both are so talented, but really, Andrew has such a way of modernizing the words, yet keeping the integrity they have of that type of written word, it’s amazing
That girls acting was brilliant indeed both was 💕
Huge talent
Incredible performance by the two!
Vintage fleabag content. I’ll take it.
I love how you almost forget this isn't a modern conversation even with old words because of the way he says it. Best version of this scene
his facial microexpressions between "I did love you" and "once" let you understand everything...
I had no idea this was hamlet until I read the description and I was so confused but impressed
Andrew Scott is a brilliant actor. I envy anyone who have seen him on stage. Seeing him perform live is on my bucket-list.
I read the play back in high school and I always felt for poor Ophelia. She’s caught between her father and his loyalty to their new king and her lover who basically treated her with contempt and despite not being a part of either and getting dragged into it without her consent got the brunt of it from Hamlet. Poor girl 😢
this is was the first time i’ve ever seen shakespeare being performed. oh my gosh words can not describe the emotions i just felt.
I like the nuances in this performance.
He is just awesome...in his own way. Just love him....
He’s good and when he plays you can see how he feels the emotions from his eyes
I’ll see myself to the nunnery if it means I can glimpse the priest.

andrew scott is one of my favorite actors ever
This gotta be so hard to do. So many legends have done this, it's probably the most played roles of all time, so you have to master the language and add your own skills to it. Andrew does it well
I can't stop watching him as Hamlet. He's by far the best I've seen... and as I'm studying English Lit I have seen a fair few!
David Tennant is an entirely opposite but extremely good interpretation
This is how you translate Shakespeare to stage.
he is such a great actor, that performance in one black mirror episode blew me away
is there a full version of this anywhere? i am so mesmerized by andrew scott's acting. he is phenomenal
It's almost like a cleverbot conversation but medieval version
Andrew’s acting makes me thrilled. He’s so good.
The man is awash in actorisms, and he still gives an awesome performance.
Some amazing facial expressions / show of emotion. I remember just a few years ago doing Hamlet scenes in Highschool!
I just adore Jessica Brown Findlay, gorgeous and talented with a unique voice
Technique becomes unnoticeable when touches perfection.
He is so great as an actor, I just can't🙌
The thing is it’s not that he doesn’t love her, he’s trying to protect her from himself
@Andrew Scott you’re not really Andrew Scott
It’s the first Ophelia I’ve seen in a very long time that has literally any strength to her. Jessica Brown Findlay delivers ‘I was the more deceived’ so well.

From the beginning of this clip, you can feel.her anguish, pain on her heart, disraught, no words....just a...great actress...

This guy is just extraordinary!
Such an amazing, intelligent and emotionally intelligent actor. I had not heard of Jessica Bron Findlay, but from this brief clip she seems to me equally amazing. I first saw Andrew Scott in the Sherlock series; if you didn't know, his total time on screen throughout the series totals something like under 5 minutes... wherein he made an indelible impression and completely stunned audiences.
