    Def a fantastic video. Very informative, showing all the pertinent tackle and explains everything. Good job. I am a trophy Striper hunter and was looking at the tranx 4 and 500 and some calcuttas but I went with a Daiwa Prorex 400 8.1 for my glide and swim baits. Great small palmable reel with nice capacity and 30 lbs of drag. Smooth as butter. I fish rough fast rivers and under dams in Tennessee and gotta have serious tough tackle, it paired with a 10 ft skeet Reese big swimbait rod. It's a awesome combo for big 12 inch baits. Coastals have wimpy drags with 12 lbs of drag. Not enuff drag. Tranx only have 18 lbs. Prorex 30 lbs. Also...there are plenty of new spinning reels that handle big swimbaits. Like my saragosa 6000, daiwa saltiga dogfight 5000 and the new penn authority or any of the Daiwa Saltist MQ The BGMQ have plenty of line capacity and are super tough for the big glides and swimmers. I have a fenwick hotstik thats perfect for spinning and big glides

      That Calcutta should definitely hold enough line for what you’re looking for, as long as you don’t accidentally hook into a ray or a yellow haha. There’s tons of different rods out there for what you’re looking for. Megabass has a few options, dobyns has the new fury line as well as there classic champion series rods. Phoenix and irod both make solid rods too that you can find at local tackle shops out your way. I would recommend finding a rod rated up to 2-3oz just Incase you feel like throwing bigger baits for them!

    Abu Garcia for the win. I grew up with shimano and own mostly shimano reels but lately I’ve been very disappointed and unimpressed with shimano especially my tranx 400 which I use for musky fishing and casting very large lures for flathead catfish. My friend is a Abu Garcia fanboy and I used to be a shimano fanboy but he has been proving me wrong with damn near every reel I purchase. Abu is just way more durable, most times for half the price and just as smooth. Everyone of his reels have lasted double the lifetime than any of my shimanos.

      In theory yes but what hurts 300 vs 400 is line capacity for stronger, larger diameter lines needed for those bigger baits. It's not so much the power of the gearing that makes a 400 better its that it allows for more, stronger line.

    Baits up to 4oz, any 150-200 sized conventional reel will work. Especially if you’re in a boat and spot casting. Above that, skip up to a 300-400 depending on how many inches per turn you need and what line capacity you need. That’s it. (Stay away from the tranx HG unless you’re throwin 10” plus glide baits. It’s too fast for 95% of baits)
    Also, the ryoga/pluton/z2020 are all known for their self destruction. You’re going to want to stay away from those haha.
    The exception to the rule for 200 sized reels are the daiwa tatula HD and Curado K. They’ll both handle baits up to around 6-6.5oz.

    Why not throw the 250 on a 400 size reel? As you mentioned and also from what I saw on a Bill Siemantle video the 400 would be a good choice for wide gliding baits in regards to cadence and or a more consistent retrieve speed. Really trying to get people’s opinions as I’m trying to find a compact size 400 reel to throw a 250 slide swimmer on. I tend to fish really fast so I love my Calcutta 400B but it feels too big to me on any rod less than 8’6. Is the conquest 400 smaller than the Calcutta 400B?

    • @crazybassfisher
      @crazybassfisher  Před 3 lety +1

      So it really depends on how you like to fish your glide baits (especially the 250) on a regular basis. For the most part, here in Az, we are targeting tight small ambush spots where we like to really slash and dart the bait in and out to get a reaction. I rarely catch glide bait fish out in open water much where I would slow reel the bait in. So, if you fish more open areas, a 300-400 would be a great size. Look at butch brown, used a Calcutta for the longest time with the 250 by just reeling the bait in out in open water. The Calcutta conquest 400 is definitely more compact than other Calcutta models in the same size category. A lot of guys are just grabbing slower low profile reels these days since finding a compact 400 size round reel is super hard or you’ll be paying a fortune for one

      @@RyanSmith-fb8rf thank you. I had a Lexa 300 HD. Used it for Musky fishing and mid cast the thumb bar would engage which would send my lure crashing into the water. It happened nearly every cast. Brand new and I threw it in the trash. It was clearly a lemon reel and may have been an easy fix but TW wouldn’t help me with it so I was like screw it. I just was unfortunate and got a defective reel. I think its gonna happen regardless of the brand. Tranx and Bantam are my favorite reels and I’ve had minor issues with both but Shimano makes it very easy to send the reels in for service and repair which is why I prefer them.
