How Did Rodney Alcala Get Away With 130 Murders | Murder Made me Famous | Beyond Crime

  • With estimates that run as high as 130 murders, Rodney Alcala’s ruthless spree of murder, rape, and sexual assault throughout the 1970’s has been widely compared to that of Ted Bundy’s. During this time, Alcala took sexually explicit photos of hundreds of young men and women as a self-proclaimed professional photographer. Alcala was a contestant on the TV show, The Dating Game in 1978 - despite being a convicted rapist, registered sex offender, and being investigated for multiple murders. After two mistrials, Alcala was sentenced to death in 2010 and 120 of his horrific photographs were later released by police to identify any additional victims.(1971)

The judicial system in California not only bombed Tali Shapiro, but ultimately failed to protect how many other women and girls over the next ten to eleven years? The system that released Alcala after he served not even three years for the atrocity that nearly killed that girl ended up accumulating an awful lot of blood on its hands.

You wanna know who's fault it is for him killing many women? The pathetic justice system, that let him out of prison after raping and attempted murder of that 8 year old girl. I'm guessing there was 3 serious charges, such as the abduction of a child, rape and attempted murder. I guess this isn't enough for a life sentence. So many violent crimes are re offenders but the justice system continues to give monsters a second chance and many times a 3rd chance

    • @philsurtees

No. American society is to blame. The justice system is merely one of the many symptoms of a barbaric society. Is the justice system to blame for an average of more than one mass shooting per day? No. You're trying to blame the justice system for what happened *_AFTER_* yet another serial killer came along, when you should be asking why yet another serial killer came along in the first place. It's the disease that is to blame, not the symptoms...

They should never be out on bail. That is leting them out to commit more crimes. In my book when a human being commits such atrocious crimes. He doesn't get another chance. Did it take 130 murders of innocent girls. To keep him in jail. Give me a job, and I would put him away for good the frst time, he commited a murder. I blame the authorities and the Govt. for not protecting the citizens. When a person gets life. LIFE it should be. No parole after X number of years. In the BIBLE God says EYE FOR AN EYE, TOOTH FOR A TOOTH. If these idiots in high authorities, like lawyers, Judges, and Govt. ministers did their job right. The frightening thing is many of these psychopaths are very handsome. My neighbour was like this. I always had a bad feeling about him but brushed it off telling myself that I was being paranoid.
One night I went out with my friend and I came home only to discover my dog that was originally locked in the laundry running around the lounge room, the alarm system had gone off numerous times so I dismissed it as perhaps not closing the laundry door properly and the dog setting off the alarm. As I was showering to get ready for bed I heard my dog barking, I threw on a towel and came out to find in my hallway was my neighbour who was just standing there looking at me.
I screamed at him to get out and he casually turned around and walked away, I ran to the front and back door making sure the deadlocks were on. My heart was in my throat I was shaking so much even though he didn’t touch me, the fact he was in my personal space and I was not initially aware of his presence freaked me out. For a long time I was too scared to go outside or even go to sleep.
I’m sure I dropped the phone several times calling 000 as I was shaking so much. When the police arrived they discovered that he had got in somehow without any apparent force, the only thing I could think of was when I let my dog out to go to do his business was when he must have got inside and hid up in the ceiling space. As the man hole in the ceiling was open and it was previously closed.
To think all that time he was in my home, possibly going through my things, in my home. I couldn’t stay there.
The police charged him for my situation but he basically got off due to being on the mental health care system. Also because ‘he didn’t strike’ me as the words used by his solicitor seemed to be okay.
It turned out a month later he attacked and killed a neighbour who was a lady in a wheelchair.
    I knew her too.💔

An IQ of 140...he could have researched exactly what he needed to say to psychiatrist to prove himself sane. But even that is zero excuse. That psych should have known that the majority of child abusers are lifelong repeat offenders, it is not a prediliction that has ever proved to be changeable, so far. Plus he only served 3 years for abducting, sexually assaulting and almost murdering a child, only prevented by the good neighbour and police. That psych should be in prison as an accomplice to all his successive crimes.

A technicality has more importance in a rotten system than the TRUTH .
A God damned techincality should be null in front of the evident truth.
So ,not the truth is what the law is after , but to respect the rules of the game. The game is important.

I am in no way excusing what this butt did to his victims, however, there are theories about high lead concentration in 70s and 80s that could correlate to the high amount of operating serial killers at that time. Could explain why his home life was "normal" but he still did this.

The guy who followed them should have intervened by asking the girl if he knew the guy.Anything , just to delay a crime.
When he was rejected from the army ,his papers should have been put in a data base where law enforcement and detectives would have had access anytime as they already knew what kind of an abnormal asocial creep he was.
In those years all this was not yet practice.
    But is it nowadays ??????
" How did that happen ????"
An entire chain of incompetency .
The criminal had a higher IQ than all those who should have stopped his criminal career ,put together.
Bcs : WHO is checking the IQ when people are hired in law enforcement ?????

The whole saga was riddled with mind boggling stupidity. He tried murdering an 8 yo girl & was let off with a light sentence. Years later Police question him about murders in California & aren't even aware of his previous conviction. Then he's arrested for sexually assault & let out on bail despite the severity of the offense & his criminal record. His mother was sure that his arrest was a mistake, despite knowing what he'd done before.

When he was freed on bail the second time, why wasn’t he watched 24/7?
Why was the bail not set at an unaffordable level?
At the first police involvement, where one cop stayed with the girl, why didn’t the other cop chase Alcala?
The reasons for Alcala’s aberrant personality will be found in his childhood.
We can’t know with certainty what anyone else’s childhood entailed, and I wish people would stop pretending and saying they do know.
What I know for certain is that parenting is very often done poorly, and needs a thorough reappraisal.
We spent lots of time reacting to crimes and not enough on prevention.
