Buddy Holly (Weezer, 1994) ... played on the accordion!

- I had noble intentions of celebrating the end of Black History Month by recording more songs by Black artists, and somehow wound up ticking over the odometer and doing two songs back to back by Weezer, perhaps the whitest band there is? (Black people everywhere, up in arms at this provocative injustice: fear not, I promise I will be getting around to ruining your songs also.) I used to make a big deal when I did a second song by a band (what a point of distinction when most bands haven't even been covered by me once!) and of course two in a row? Unprecedented! And Weezer isn't even my thing! I can't explain it. (But will that stop me from trying to? I'm the Juggernaut of typing, nothing can stop my exposition!)
I warmed up with this one, one of their original hits, on-camera in the same recording session. "Buddy Holly" never got much stage time in my sets, and indeed it's difficult to even understand why it's in my songbook in the first place. (It's very regrettable: I have about a dozen slots in my brain for retained memorized song lyrics, and until I die there will be this dud fruitlessly squatting one of them.) The best explanation I can come up with is that when I was self-orientating on my instrument I tried not to limit myself to "songs I like" (because let's face it, Tubular Bells side 2 is a bit much to chew on when you're just getting started) and branched out to trying to learn at least one favorite song of everyone I knew, so I could impress (or horrify) my friends by encroaching into the realm of their faves. Weezer would have been among the favorites of my high school sweetheart Alison, so I probably picked this one up after trying unsuccessfully at the turn of the century to find and adapt "Karate Man" by Halifax's "Super Friendz". (She was also fond of the Sex Pistols, which I did a few accordion adaptations of -- some cognitive dissonance to look forward to.)
I should note here that tomorrow evening, this Friday from 7-9 pm PST, I'm scheduled to be hosting the Zoom substitute for the monthly get-together of the Vancouver Squeezebox Circle. Inquire for details!
This is amazing so aweomse
All right, where is today's sudden avalanche of Weezer fans finding this video?
@@RowanLipkovits we found your video and we thought itd be nice to comment
Glad you're enjoying it, I'm just wondering where you all stumbled upon it specifically today after it spent a pretty quiet year up here? Did I wind up shared in some group chat or posted to a subreddit?
@@RowanLipkovits magic of youtube recommended sir
@@kittylegend4598 sorry for sounding so suspicious, the graphed views for that song look like a grassy lawn with a hundred foot tall tree sticking up out of it. I make efforts to figure out why a given video pops when it does but usually you’re just never going to know.

I would kill for the chords for this
I have a bit of "walking bass" connective tissue, but basically the verses are just a bunch of A minor, C major. Pre-chorus ("woo hoo") is F G C, chorus is C F G twice, then A minor F C, wrapping up with an F G C. Ah, and the bridge: C G A, G C D E D C G ... if you want to be a bass player. (bridge wraps with mor eof the pre-chorus.) Cheers, looking forward to hearing your version!
@@RowanLipkovits thank you so much!!
Weezer Al Yankovic
That would be the man fronting the band during the music video for Weezer’s cover of Toto’s “Africa”. We’re not worthy!
love this =)
