    Porsche has revamped the Macan for 2021, and we put Steve Sutcliffe behind the wheel of the all-new, range-topping GTS model to find out if the hot SUV can still mix it with the best. The new GTS replaces the Macan Turbo as the hottest variant of Porsche's baby SUV, and packs the firepower to warrant the badge. A 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 motor sends 434bhp and 550Nm of torque to all four wheels, bringing the car from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds. Our man Sutcliffe puts the facelifted model to the test.

    For those wondering between X3MC and Macan GTS…
    X3MC = faster, wilder, very harsh suspension for a daily driver, more tech features and standard creature comforts, spacious interior.
    Macan GTS = fun, more refined engine/suspension to remain planted when pushed around tight corners but comfy/compliant the rest of time, less spacious for tall adults/teens in rear seats than X3MC, more $, but, hey, it’s a Porsche! - Prestige ;-)
    The sweet point in all aspects, IMHO, goes to the X3 M40i.

    Thanks Steve, great review as usual.I bought my first Macan in part on the back of your very complimentary comments of the first Macan you drove way back when. Just a possible point of annoyance with Porsche; why have they decided to remove the "GTS" embroidery from the rear seat headrests ? Surely it could not be a huge saving for such an obvious visual element ?

    At aged 64, I can recall a magazine article titled Cat v Commando, in which a Norton Commando 850 took 13 seconds to hit 100 MPH and a V12 E-type Jag took 17 seconds. How things have moved on ! Great thing about the new GTS is that in addition to the fact that it takes over for the Turbo in terms of power (by utilizing the old Turbo engine, which was roughly equivalent to the 440hp Turbo PP from a few years ago), it also carries over the sporty chassis of the GTS trim (air suspension, lowered ride height, etc) *AND improves* upon it by stiffening the front and rear suspension by 10-15%. Add that to all the other standard GTS goodies like PSE as standard and the GTS styling, and it’s pretty much the perfect CUV (minus the new front and rear bumpers which are a small step backwards imo).

      The Turbo Perf Pack is still the most powerful Macan made yet and also has upgraded standard brakes (non ceramics) above the Macan Turbo… I have a white/red one with nearly every option except for the ceramics :) Its basically a Turbo S in all but name. @@charlielong aside from the brake difference you mentioned, hp is pretty close (-6 on the new GTS), although torque on the PP was way up there at 442 vs. 405 on the GTS. Performance, however, looks to be fairly identical. Same published top speeds at 169 and the new GTS actually inches ahead in published 0-60 by 0.1s if equipped with SC (4.1s 2022 GTS vs. 4.2s for the Turbo PP). The GTS also gains the stiffer suspension, plus you get all of the new tech goodies like newer PCM, larger screen, wireless Apple CarPlay, etc. Not a bad package at all.

  • @charlielong
    @charlielong Před 2 lety +7

    You seem to have forgotten the Macan Turbo Performance Package, which is still the most powerful Macan produced yet. It has 440 hp vs 434 hp shown here. And it had almost every performance feature come standard (minus carbon ceramics, which are unnecessary as the brakes are upgraded from the standard Turbo anyways)

Its fast it rides like its on rails and even though I have the 375 HP on my GTS nothing that a Cobb Short Tune cant bump it up to 445 HP in a hurry and its still fantastic. Plus it does have off Road mode which is good to have when you happen to get yourself in a pinch if you need to raise the height and protect your chassis. I own an X3M Competition, had it 3 years and change it next week. But, drove the Macan GTS about 4 months ago and actually loved the interior but could feel the drop in power over the X3M and if both had a race the Macan wouldn’t be anywhere close. X3M ride is harder but I like that, so it’s personal choice but if I had to choose it would be the X3M every time. It’s just ‘more’.
    You buy the Macan GTS to be cast and sporty, if so, the X3M has 80bhp and 100nm more.

    Porsche doesn't stand behind the quality of their vehicles. The transfer case on my 2015 Macan S has failed twice now in only 27,000 miles. This is a known issue which caused Porsche to extend their warranty to 7 ys. Their "improved" transfer case lasted only 2 years 2 months and 9,000 miles. I am out of warranty by 6 weeks and Porsche turns their back on problem and sticks me for $3,200 repair. Don't buy a Porsche w/o extended warranty for entire length of time you expect to own it. #1 rated warranty company - Endurance - won't even sell coverage on Macan. That should tell Porsche and all potential buyers something. Customer experience is far from an expected premium car brand experience.

      I read your comments with interest. I have a 2016 Macan S Diesel, the transfer box went last month at 70,000 miles. They replaced the unit telling me I had a new 7 year warranty on the replacement. I shall check this tomorrow. I live in Switzerland and often drive backwards and forwards to the UK, hence the high mileage but I do get 40 mpg which I find incredible for such a vehicle. Apart from the transfer box problem, which Porsche fixed with no argument, I cannot praise the Macan enough. But your comments are heeded, wouldn’t you think they would fix the design fault and then give you a new unit rather than just replace a faulty unit with another of the same design which seems to be the case. Not good.

      @@mvmallinson My Macan S has now been in dealership for repair for 6 weeks. The transfer case was replaced (for 2nd time) during this time and I now have error codes and am told I have 7 modules that are not coded correctly. They are waiting on 3 modules to replace in hopes the other 4 can be recoded once the 3 are replaced. Cost is $4,900 for 3. I sure hope all 7 wont need replacing. My bill is already over $8k. For a car with only 27000 miles the issues are frustrating and disappointing. I plan to replace the car once it gets out of dealer service department. No more Porsches, Audi, or VW for me. BMW will get my new business . The Macan was a joy for its first 7 years but now the joy is gone and I don't feel it will be reliable any longer.

    Not having a turbo s badge matters... You can charge more for that badge.... I'm only interested in turbo cars.... Preferably turbo s.... I mean, Porsche is literally the king of up selling people on features and they didn't think a badge matters?

    Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
    from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
    Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by
    reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated
    central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down
    all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From
    2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as
    exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox
    oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no
    investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even
    created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbot" in German. :-/

      It's not the fastest version imo... The x3 and the GLC have 510 hp, the next Macan Turbo (if there is one) will probably bridge the gap, just like the new Panamera and Cayenne Turbo S did with the x5/m5/amg63 (going from 550 hp to 630 hp). Despite the lower power output I suspect that this Macan GTS might keep up with a x3 M on a track

    • @icydelight3693
      @icydelight3693 Před 2 lety +1

      @@user-el5hk7ex5k well if you check zeperfs the x3m competition (and the GLC Amg) have a track index of 154/155 vs the track index of 140 of the old Macan Turbo PP. The track index depends on the laptimes on different tracks, the higher the better. The x3m seems to be faster than the old Turbo PP, so I think that x3m (or the Mercedes) would be quite a challenge to the Macan GTS, which is 70 hp down on power.

    You need a different reviewer. His voice is too soft, his language too wordy and repeating points already noted. I had to give this one a thumbs down. It just seem too dull in the Porsche world of one of the most highly rated SUV's in the world because of build quality and performance.

      I think you're missing the point. Mr Sutcliffe I think gets across perfectly how capable the Macan GTS is in real world situations and how that's accomplished with no drama whatsoever. However, if he were reviewing a Caterham, I would expect him to be a little more animated.

    Such a wonderful SUV... makes the most money for Porsche... and yet they want to stop building it in favor of the EV version. What a brutally terrible mistake! The rest of the world still wants to buy them. And of course, liberal idiots think 100% electric vehicles will be managed by human beings to be more "green" in some way. Conservation of energy, vs. the idiots in the world. Battery technology just isn't there yet. Recycling has not been arranged ahead of this. Mandating this is just absurd.

    Cars without a purpose...Porsche carries on with its identity crisis...with trademark bits of its royal cars (911, Cayman, Boxster...) ending up watered down, cheapened and slapped on these porky purposeless vehicles. It would like to be still a sports car company but sadly it is not one anymore regardless if it still builds sport cars or not.
