  • Is foiling dangerous? When you don't respect your limits, you take shortcuts and you act cocky, it is.
    Today, I found it out for myself.
    Lesson learned.
    But yeah, the beach start is still my favourite and I'll keep practicing until I'm able to start medium size foil from any beach, regardless the depth and the shape.

    When your learning something new, max of two hour session, you start to become fatigued and your performance drops off, risk of injury goes up dramatically, and you start to unlearn what your learned, your making good progress.

    I don't want to be a smart ass, but I'd never go without helmet and impact vest at the least. It weights nothing. I'm learning and I always wear wetsuit as well, not for the water temperature, but for this particular reason. I wish you speedy recovery.

    get well soon brother...trials and errors are part of life, but not everything needs to be trained to failure like in the gym. sometimes just sit back and enjoy what you had already accomplished instead of judging yourself as if you are not doing enough😢❤

    My first dockstart session ended up with a deep cut on my back and I was out of the water for a month. To all beginners, use impact vest + helmet and have a spotter. It's wise to use booties when learning beach start, the foil can cut your feet pretty badly.

    Dang dude. I’m learning how to use mine right now, I’ve been wearing a kayaking helmet every time, then one day I tried without it and a few tries in the board came back around and hit me an inch away from my temple, still hurt, but at least it hit hard bone. Helmet has been back on ever since.

    Hey I've started beachstart and something that helped me a lot was to put the foil as low as possible, you have less room for pumping afterwards but if you have the speed it's ok and it's WAY easier to jump on it.
    Also I struggle to think that I will actually jump on it sometimes and that holds me back.
    Also I discovered dockstarting with smaller wings is soo fun ! From png 1300 to artpro 1201 paired with skinny 40 you have qo much speed and it's really not that hard for pumping.
    Good luck for next time ;)

      thank you for your suggestions! I think I gain speed the right way but then I lose it during the jump, so, as you said, the jump might be the problem! feel free to write me on Instagram, I'd love to talk about this in depth and learn something from you!

    My second session trying to dock start also ended with a cut to my shin bone. Very painful. This sport is not for the faint of heart.

    damn, good recovery that a lot of sitching. even in dockstart i notice afterward some cut in my wetsuit , im wearing full protection impact vest even shin protector and helmet and still thick wesuit.
    Hitting the foil on something is how i opened my shin , hopefully that was nothing compared to your cuts.

    Get well soon! I’m sure you have watched all these attempts many times. I’m not a beachstarter so just my studying. What jumped out at me was it seemed like you were jumping late after the water had gotten too deep. Then you are so deeply crouched and your feet are so close together. No potential energy left to glide away and start your pump. Can you think of beach start more like a start from a low rock? Stationary or one explosive step and leap immediately after. Maybe you even mentioned that in one of your rockstart videos about it potentially helping you on the beach later if you could start from a submerged rock. Cheers

    • @gaeldaniele
      @gaeldaniele  Před měsícem +1

      Thanks for your suggestions! I agree with you regarding the fact I jump when the water is too deep. If I have to jump so high I cannot push forward to have speed to glide until it's deep. Stationary explosive step is a no go in such shallow beach without a heavy drop. We need to generate speed on ground and keep this speed while jumpingto be able to glide until it's deep enough to pump properly

    Get well soon! Looks like you almost had it. Looking at other beachstart videos, it seems easier with high aspect ratio because of the gentle glide.

    • @gaeldaniele
      @gaeldaniele  Před měsícem

      agree. also because of the way high aspect wings like to be pumped!

    I'm really sorry for you! I hope you recover quickly. But I've often wondered why you foil without protective equipment. The wetsuit, neoprene shoes and helmet have often saved me from serious injuries, especially when practicing beach starts. Best regards and get well soon!
