I once met a Nigerian, an engineer. He was crying as he told me the story. I met him where he was working as a security guard in an office. He was the manager of a milk factory owned by an Indian in Lagos and had a staff of about 35 people. He owned his own personal house in Lagos, wife, kids, cars, drivers, maid. He sold everything and moved his family to the USA only to end up as a security guard. He said the Indian business owner begged not to go to the USA. He kept saying, what are you going to do there? You are just going to suffer. He said he wished he listend to the Indian guy.

The house he sold for about N5 million to travel out now cost about N75 million. He could not afford the same house or neighborhood. Its like a person that had a house in Ikeja, returned to buy a house in Ikorodu. He had almost no relationship with the wife or daughter left behind. Things are relatively easy in the US when it comes to career advancement, thanks to the abundance of courses and certifications available. With the right mindset and dedication to studying, it's possible to land a six-figure job. However, my brother, the situation is quite different in Europe, excluding Ireland and the United Kingdom, where opportunities are more limited. Those who are familiar with the landscape know what I'm talking about. I have been to Europe many times. I have been living in the US for about a decade and I know what I have achieved my older siblings who have been living in Europe since the early 2000s are no where close to what I have achieved and not because they are lazy or not educated.

There’s nothing wrong with Canada, Europe or America, what is needed is for you to immigrate the right way and prepare your mind to pay your dues for the time been till you are balanced. It is a matter of perspective. A good example is Isreal Adesanya’s parents who left Nigeria for better opportunities and quality of life. Today, Izzy has broken the curse of poverty, in his family fighting through the UFC. If he was in Nigeria he would not be a fighter. Its all about perspective. Lastly remember success is relative and contentment is wisdom. Think before you leap and be yourself always. No dey copy copy bcos everybody destiny is different.

However, in my perspective I shared the Adesanya family story which has a lot of positives cos Isreal was being bullied in school until he started fighting back and the rest is history. I will not dwell on the negative but rather use it only as a precautionary tale to guide my decisions. For example: Kids getting stabbed in the UK is a generalization. Stabbing is more prevalent in some areas than in other areas and I will not use that discourage people from bring their families to the Uk. This skin comparison is so deceptive. People fail to realize that the look of our skin back home is due to the dust we have everywhere mixing with our sweat because of our unpaved roads. On the other hand, people abroad have false freshness due to cold weather also if we must be honest with ourselves. The abroad fresh looking also mirrors the freshness of our food in the grocery stores or super market because of the chemicals used in preserving them that we also put in our body when we consume these food. Don't be deceived, those in Nigeria may not look as fresh as you expect, the truth is that they're more and very often healthier than those abroad. Go to Nigeria and tell me how many people in their 50s and 60s you find walking around with canes or back braces due to lower back problems. But here in America, majority of the people start developing back problems from the age of 40. Yes, you have the false fresh young looking skin, but you'll end up on a disability line and nursing home, while the people we think are older looking in Nigeria are still waxing stronger in their 70s and 80s. Go to the villages and see 70 years old men ripped with six packs, full of energy than an average of 40 years old abroad. Abeg, let's rest matter, If we rid our streets of the dust, couple with our naturally grown food back home, we'll even look better than people abroad.

It’s about a change of environment. Some people do well when they get to a new environment and start over. We are all looking for different things and may find them in different places. Yours may be at home. Someone else’s maybe abroad. It’s not necessarily the place but the opportunities it affords you. I know people who were financially comfortable in Nigeria but travelled out because their children have special needs. Nigeria is not yet a place that provides a better life for children with special needs. The parents are advancing in age and needed to secure better prospects for them. They are getting this abroad but couldn’t get it at home. I also know African Americans who are relocating to African countries to escape racism. The exchange rate favoured them so, with their savings, they were able to set up businesses and buy homes in Africa. I know another Nigerian who fled domestic violence and relocated to the UK. She lost everything in Nigeria. But was able to restart in the UK. So, you see that one man’s meat is another’s poison. You find what works for you.
