- Julie Gold sings her Grammy winning song "From a Distance" at the first annual They Write The Songs Event, sponsored by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs. Held at Baruch College on November 18, 2011. The event celebrates songwriters and their writing process, and was hosted by Julie Gold.
Videography and Editing by Jim Vern - Hudba
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
The world really needs to hear this song now.
There is something special in seeing the writer play and preform their own work. The movement and emotions gives birth to their creativity which becomes its own being.
I get the same feeling when I watch Carole King perform. And the piano is such a powerful instrument.
Here's an early video: czcams.com/video/hqwLrJ6QWho/video.html
The more I listen, the more I can't stop crying. It's a song we need now.People in the world who will become one.I listen to this song every morning.
I felt the same when I first heard Nanci Griffith singing her version.
This is true.
So very true. The people who need to be remembered n given a shout out to are the song writers❤️👍
Such a powerful and uplifting song. I first came to know it through Nanci Griffith's beautiful version, and I'm
so sad to hear of her passing a couple of days ago. Hopefully now both God and Nanci are watching us from
a distance.
I am really moved by songs like this that seem almost like prayers. Another one that comes to mind is Matisyahu's
"One Day". May talented songwriters keep on writing such inspiring songs for the good of us all. Thank you Julie.
RIP Nanci....
That made me cry. Working the outer bar of the Duplex Cabaret, I have had many lovely interactions with Julie when she played her shows, and she has always been one of the most down-to-earth performers. I always knew she wrote this gorgeous song, but seeing her sing it was other-worldly. (I write songs....not as good as this, but I get it!) Can't wait til she comes back to The Duplex, all of our staff love her!
I am so glad she wrote this song! It's so powerful, spiritual, beautiful, meaningful. I will need to look at more of Julie Gold's songs.
What an impactful song! Thank you! Nancy Did it so well!
They write beautiful songs so singers and performers can make them sound beautiful
God is watching us ... let us be worthy.
Can never hear it enough. And thank you for the shout-out to us songwriters. :)
Nice to see songwriters here, especially ones who appreciate this song. Have you written many songs?
What genre(s)? What instrument(s) do you play? And have you or other artists had success singing
your songs?
I myself have only ever written parody lyrics (well crafted I believe.. lol.. for a couple of weddings).
But I can hardly imagine coming up with a melody as well as lyrics. I am always impressed by talented
songwriters..
Julie I love you! We shared a moment you might remember but I can’t help thinking how this song may be the greatest song of all time. If I had a dying wish it would be for you to sing this song a my funeral. God IS watching us❤️😘
Just beautiful. Thanks so much Julie.
thank you for gifting us this gorgeous song...
One of the greatest songs ever written…
Rarely do you hear such a good song and performance. I believe in the anti-war lyrics. The cover by Bette Midler is great too, in a different way.
The song seems to have a life of its own. Ms. Gold, Thanks so much for writing this song.
What an amazing person to produce this incredible song! If I could wish to meet a famous world class song writer then it would be Julie Gold! Many thanks.
I was lucky enough to meet her while working the phones during NPR fundraising week in Washington DC (WAMU FM) She was also volunteering! I was in awe, but she was a very approachable, down-to-earth person. She must have volunteered several days that week, because some crank called to gripe about the breaks in regular programming, and Julie responded "now why do you have to keep calling like this? NPR needs money!" early 90s, I think
Unbelievably good song and it's wonderful to hear her play it and sing.
That brought tears to my eyes, such a beautiful song.
Now THAT is a song!
Afghanistan crises, Pandemic and internal conflict in this country brought me to this song. Very appropriate in our tough time. Fee from disease and God is watching us from the distance, so good like she knew what’s going to be when she created this piece💕🙏🇺🇸🌈
You touched my heart. Thank You
Wow! And then the composer herself plays this song and sings it we are hearing additions that were only implied in the other versions. Because, SHE knows where everything goes. .. she placed the there herself! For me, I cannot forget hearing this for the first time by the fabulous Nancy Griffith which for me is the best recording. Madam Bette came into it much later but yet has gotten most of the notoriety. Listening to Julie’s piano I hear so much Rich texture of the notes, rhythms, and lyrics which are interwoven in From a Distance. It may be slightly different than what you were first exposed to but there is no doubt that unquestionably this is the original as intended, replete with meaning. I am blown away.l
This song is truly the best song ever! Thank for writing this song!!
Thanks for composing ma'am Julie.
God bless.
This is a thrilling live performance. I love the visceral, aggressive style of piano playing and the full throat singing. Not every performer can pull that off but you do. And it's especially refreshing given the poignancy of the lyrics and frank sweetness of the melody and harmonic progressions. Really wonderful. Thank you. Judy Collins performance is gorgeous and heartrending and yours is passionate and forceful. Two fantastic performances. Thank you so much for this song. Truly it was a burst of inspiration and it burst forth in a person with the composition talents to bring it simply and powerfully to the world.
Thank you Julie Gold.
Brilliance and warmth - Julie Gold and her music
Masterpiece song...song of the century.
As much as I love Nancy Griffith, and that is a lot,.....this is the best. The passion for the meaning of the song you wrote shines so brightly, thank you for writing this. Also the simple, beautiful piano, I love this more and more every time I watch and listen, thanks again, you've given the world a blessing with this song. I've been hearing and listening to it since the late 80s, but this is a new, enlightening discovery
I sometimes feel songs are better sung by the writers, I always feel it with Jimmy Webb and I feel it here with this song.
That's certainly true more often than not. This is one example.
Thanks Julie. You give me hope. 💕🎵
Even if you don't believe a god is watching us, you still love this song and its message. Fabulous
GREAT! SO NATURAL, SO TRUE MAAM YOU ARE NOT ONLY A SINGER BUT YOU GOT A WISDOM. WE THANK YOU SO MUCH MAAM GOD🙏❤ BLESS YOU MORE AND MORE
Legend.
Phänomenen Song, unforgetable,,, In my Bach. year 1991 we was Sing this on Stage as a High school Graduetion Song
A cover of this song popped up on my Spotify, it resonates with me today and I lishto it 3 times, before looking up the history. I listened to Nancy Griffth's powerful version, and I'm wonderfully surprised to find you singing it here Julie. When I was little I liked the song, but I would think, "but God is right not far away." I think I understand it better now. Thankyou for sharing and blessing on your future songs!
Beautiful beautiful song x
What a lovely woman amazing,
A beautiful song and her voice is absolutely gorgeous. I liked this better than the famous version.
These kind of song lyrics will never die. ❤
Great musican! I am crying ❤
Best ever version I ever heart . I believe that Julie wrote the song .... Send you love from europe !
If there is a song to touch people's heart that would be the song.
I can't stop crying with a wonderful song. Let's unite people all over the world to overcome the COVID-19. This song is a cheering song for that.
Thank you for the music Julie. God bless you
If you know Julie, ask her if she remembers Ian Campbell from HBO Studio Productions. If she does, tell her I still have the saxophone. Also tell her that I was the one that left the little piano on her desk. I wanted to cheer her up as the day before she was down and was considering leaving New York for home.
Ill ask her Ian
Shy?
@@gilhelps What do you mean by Shy? Anyway. Situation has changed. I sold the Sax to a coworker. His daughter chose to take up playing the saxophone in school.
@@gilhelps If you mean shy because I didn't give the little piano to Julie in person the answer is no. I left it on her desk anonymously deliberately. I wanted her to wonder where it came from. I felt it would make more of an impact if she wondered about it giving her the feeling it possibly came from anyone instead of someone. I actually intended to tell her it was me but never did. Does that make sense. Don't have the saxophone any longer. Sold it to a coworker named Neal who since left HBO and is now working for CNN back in December of 2019. He still works at 30 Hudson Yards as I do but on a different floor. His daughter is playing the sax in school and he bought it for her. Ho, I also found the hand written bill of sale between Julie and I. Thought I lost it but it was inside the sax case. It's on HBO letterhead note pad paper and is signed by Julie and myself. My coworker's daughter was thrilled that she now owns a sax that was once owned by someone famous. Learning that made me feel wonderful. Told Neal that I hope I can hear her play it one day.
@@artmartello Also, since you know Julie, can you ask her how Nanci Griffith (RIP) found this song.
Beautiful!
This is so special. I love hearing this song sung by the songwriter. There is such a genuine quality.💗
PERFECT SONG..WOW!
I like this song.
Beautiful voice and lyrics.💯
thank you for writing this song.. this makes me emotional specially on what is happening to the world Today :'(
You gave justice to your internationally recognized original composition!
Stunning songwriting- a God gifted artisan
Thank you for posting this. I want to learn it for karaoke and didn’t want to listen to Middler. This is such a beautiful message and I can’t receive it from Middler. She has posted such hateful things about many of us Americans that I can’t believe the lyrics when they come out of her mouth. No longer can I watch movies that she and many other celebrities are in because of their hateful politics. I can believe it when Julie Gold sings it. And I believe that the day will come when the world will get along, but evil will first have to be eradicated. From a place that is far away, I see that happening. Messiah will come and make it all right. Thank you, Julie, for writing this beautiful song.
Class act in every way
Julie Gold - I love the story/introduction you tell about Russian/Soviet life in the late 1980s and early 1990s. #fromadistance - I also think about Operation Desert Storm and #iraq and #kuwait . And how Colin Bowles and his daughters introduced me to the song or perhaps I heard it during a 1991 assembly/school bell [Cuttriss and the boombox #memoirs #crystallise ].
Magnificent Julie!
i LOVE this songit makes me cry also, all the moreso to see the author, Juie perform it. I want to hug her. So, if god is indeed watching us, and is a loving and powerful god, why is god not helping us ? I am serious.
Would have loved to see her in concert!
Bravo!!!!
WOW that's powerful..
From a distance
The world looks blue and green
And the snow capped mountains white
From a distance
The ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight
From a distance
There is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It's the voice of hope
It's the voice of peace
It's the voice of every man
From a distance
We all have enough
And no one is in need
And there are no guns,
No bombs, and no disease
No hungry mouths to feed
From a distance
We are instruments
Marching in a common band
Playing songs of hope
Playing songs of peace
They are the songs of every man
God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us
From a distance
From a distance
You look like my friend
Even though we are at war
From a distance
I just cannot comprehend
What all this fighting's for
From a distance
There is harmony
And it echoes through the land
And it's the hope of hopes
It's the love of loves
It's the heart of every man
It's the hope of hopes
It's the love of loves
This is the song for every man
God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us
From a distance
Oh, God is watching us
God is watching
God is watching us
From a distance
Love you somuch miss
Beautiful song and wow! can she play that piano!
Princess tutu
The year we liberated Quwait☆☆☆
Have a goodnight productions ideas ❤
She obviously believes in the sentiments. If it's the only song she ever composed it's enough.
rip, nanci. peace.
No song could be more apt today 28.2.22
She commands that grand piano like a chef with a butter knife
What is the meter of the piece..
What is the dynamic level of the beginning
Love hearing her sing her song. For me, the definitive version is Cliff Richard's. If you haven't heard it, give it a shot. He turns it into an anthem, which I think the song is. And if you don't know who Cliff Richard is, shame on you. Next to Elvis and The Beatles, there's been nobody else as popular in the pop/rock era.
As John McEnroe said...you can not be serious!
The entire message is lost .A beautiful simple lyric savaged with an up tempo show biz version that jars on the brain. Cliff did some good stuff but not this one.
holy crow. wow.
Julie wrote the song but gave it to Nanci Griffith, who recorded it first. Then Cliff Richard and Bette Midler recorded it the years following Nanci's version.
I would put this song on par with John Lennon 's "Imagine".
No disrespect whatsoever, but I bet she was happy with The Divine Miss M performing this.
Bette Midler's version of this song is so beautiful.
I prefer Julie's. And Nanci Griffith's. More emotion, seems to me. But, Bette made the song so very famous!
@@donstone7103 Midler stoled the recording sound from Griffith
Wow is the literally the writer of that song??
who panned the L/R channels?
Such a gorgeous song, and sadly, more relevant than ever as Putin invades Ukraine. God bless and watch over all of us.
could have @ least put reverb on mic
You can never match the original song writers emotional investment, no matter how precise a vocalist you are.
I wish that young Elvis had been the first to get this song.
This song should be Putin’s wake up call!
Mr Putin should listen to this song
It seems God got forgotten with this version. Well he IS watching us. Even if some would rather he wasn’t.
nancy griffiths .... sings this ... go listen ....
Nanci's version is sweet sincere and just what we need now. Thank you for writing it, Julie gold
I hate the aggresive piano playing and the full throat singing. This lady doesnt do this song justice the way it should be sung or played. Her voice is more suited to a pub gig. Terrible cover overall.
She wrote it dumbdick she can sing it how she wants....
It is not a cover. As the writer, she is singing it the way she meant it.
Are you mad? Or just utterly unfeeling and stupid?
@steve get back on here and apologise - you muppet!
