I live in Japan and have spoken to my colleagues about Nasubi. The younger generation is horrified but the older generation (60+) laughs with nostalgic reverance of this absolute goldmine of entertainment. My girlfriend and I watched most of it and had a good time despite just how dehumanizing the whole show was. Nasubi has become a local hero and even helped people deal with lockdown and social distancing (both of which were absolutely horrible ideas) by giving speeches and appearing on talkshows about his time on this show.
All that said, it's awful what happened to Nasubi and he should be given anything he damn well wants. A bunch of money and an apology is hardly enough to compensate for the psycholgical damage he had to endure.
"Sorry, you've been picked up for a sixth season."
This was way sadder and more cruel than I thought it would be. Poor dude was tortured and mocked by his whole nation just for a tv show

Meh, I'd do it, no bother. It wasn't even a year and he could always have left if he wanted. The fame gained would be worth it for me, mocked or not. I'd write a book and do interviews afterwards. People make careers off of much less and it beats physical labor any day.

I have seen some video documentaries about Nasubi by people who live in Japan and they have confirmed Nasubi received no final prize, no money, no royalties from any of his merchandise, no royalties from the sale of the stolen journal. He did not profit (or more properly, he was never compensated) a single penny. Nothing.
Surely him being as big as he was he could've taken legal action and forced them to give him some kind of compensation
@@thomasforrest7380definitely but here’s the issue though, he wasn’t mentally there anymore. The dude was too psychologically damaged. Think he could really try make a court case at the state he was in after this
@@thomasforrest7380 As a lawyer myself, I cannot possibly imagine that the network's attorneys would have allowed a show, whose entire concept was to treat an unwitting person with extreme and intentional physical, mental, emotional cruelty; in which the producers willfully lied about traumatizing facts such as saying the footage would be edited down into selective highlights and broadcast after the show completed, when their intention had always been to stream his naked insanity live across the internet 24/7... and that they possibly would have made all kinds of merchandise using his likeness (without his consent) selling the footage of him eating Ramen noodles to a Ramen company to make commercials (without his consent) and simply stole and published his journal, that would have rightfully been his intellectual property (without his consent) unless, before the show began, they got him to sign some kind of contract that gave them all rights to the use of his image and likeness in perpetuity, as well as exclusive rights to all media related to the filming of the show (which would include film footage as well as his "personal journal")... along with airtight clauses that absolved them from all liability for any harm and almost certainly an NDA barring him from discussing any aspect of the show or of his experience or of the producers actions that was not made publicly known information by the producers at their discretion.....
These kinds of contracts are standard fare even for American reality shows that are generally made relatively safe and ethically. There is not a lawyer in the world who would be so careless as to not ensure an intentionally unsafe and unethical reality show did not secure those same protections.
@@thomasforrest7380 I assure you, as a lawyer myself, there is no way the network's attorneys allowed them to create a show predicated on treating a man with such physical, mental and emotional cruelty. As well as willfully lying to him about traumatizing facts, such as their promise the footage would be edited down and aired after the contest finished, when their intention all along had been to willfully lie and broadcast his naked insanity across the internet, to paying customers 24/7... As well as making merchandise using his likeness (without his consent), selling footage of him eating Ramen, to a Ramen company to make commercials (without his consent) and stole his "personal journal" that would have absolutely qualified as Nasubi's intellectual property... Without making sure they got Nasubi to sign a contract before beginning the actual show.
A contract that would have absolved the producers of all liability for any harm suffered during the filming of the show. As well as giving them complete rights to his likeness in perpetuity, as well as complete ownership of all "media" created as as part of the contest, which would have given them the rights to the footage as expected, but also to the journal that he kept during that time (essentially waiving his IP rights to their content.) They also would have gotten an airtight NDA that would bar Nasubi from discussing any information about the show, or his experience, or the actions of the show's producers under any circumstances.
These same contracts with all these same clauses are standard fare for American reality shows, where the producers are tasked with making the show as safe and ethical as possible and in which the contestant understand ahead of time what the potential risks and rewards are.
There is no lawyer in the world who is so careless that he would not have ensured these protections were in place, airtight and unbreakable before allowing their client to do something this cruel and reckless. If the Networks attorneys did their job (and the Japanese always do) I guarantee you that any attempt by Nasubi to bring any legal action against the show, while trying to seek compensation for something he had signed away all rights to be compensated for, that case would have ended with Nasubi being forced to pay the network a punitive amount of compensation for breach of contract.
