    This groundbreaking title revitalized the donkey kong franchise with a series of games that went down in history. Inspired by the super mario series, DKC went on to be one of the first home console games to feature pre-rendered graphics. It was visually revolutionizing for its time and would be met with mountains of praise. Despite having some hiccups along the way, DKC went on to become one of the greatest game series of all time.
    This is the Donkey Kong Country iceberg.

    Very interesting video. There are two references you missed out on... one of which comes from outside Nintendo (gasp!) The first is Bleak's House in DKC3, which is a reference to the novel Bleak House by Charles Dickens. The non-Nintendo bit is the fact that Rare actually sneaked in a few discreet references to DKC in Sea of Thieves. For example, one of the ship decorations you can get is a swordfish that is colored EXACTLY like Enguarde. As for DK being Cranky's son and thus the grown-up Donkey Kong Jr., Leigh Loveday himself (the main writer for the trilogy) confirmed as such. Mario and Jumpman are also the same character and the age discrepancy between him and Cranky can be explained by the fact that, in real life, gorillas age roughly twice as fast as humans.

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude Před rokem

      Leigh Loveday often made jokey remarks and made stuff up on the Rare forums. It's very unlikely that DK is supposed to be DK Jr. It's possible around the time of DK64 that they were supposed to be the same, but that's definitely been dropped. Nintendo has referred to Cranky as DK's grandfather consistently for the last 2 decades. What Leigh Loveday said doesn't matter, because it's in Nintendo's hands now.

    • @KingdomHeartsBrawler
      @KingdomHeartsBrawler Před rokem

      @@DaNintendude That may technically be true, but I invoke death of the author. I personally prefer Leigh Loveday's telling of things, partly because I like the thematic consistency and partly because it fits more neatly into the Mario timeline. Not only that, but Returns and Tropical Freeze make nods to the "modern DK = adult DK Jr." line of thinking with the Golden Temple and Secret Seclusion levels.
      Also, if I am going to nitpick, the bit about Nintendo consistently calling Cranky DK's grandfather technically isn't accurate. Back in the 2000s when the DKC games were being remade, Cranky was described as being DK's dad and the original DK on Nintendo's site. It honestly seems inconsistent, but Nintendo has been known to flip-flop on canon more times than not (with maybe Metroid and Kirby being the only exceptions).

      @@Maker1 The expansion pack for donkey kong 64 was needed to solve a game killing glitch if the game was running for more than 10 hours or something. The expansion pack was not origianlly intended for this title. The extra RAM was like a fix to the bug problem. Was not designed with the pack in mind and that is why it was bundled with the game. Rare lost a bunch of money on this title due to that.

    Jumpman being Mario's dad is literally impossible, lol.
    It has been stated quite a few times over the years that Mario and Jumpman are the same person. And this is backed up in Odyssey, where Mario is clearly the one who saved Pauline back in the first DK game. And no, Lady is not a separate character from Pauline. Odyssey has a handful of implications that they're the same as well.
    Regarding DK being Cranky's son, it's worth noting that Cranky has been consistently referred to as DK's grandfather for 2 decades now. DK64 is the only time he was called Cranky's son. Nintendo officially sees Cranky as his grandfather.

    It is absolutely wild to me that, even thirty years ago, there were people out there who would unquestioningly believe a rumor they heard that had no real evidence or any credible sources to back it up (essentially going on the "Source: Dude, trust me" mentality), so long as it reaffirmed their own agenda. It's honestly sad and embarrassing to be quite frank - one would assume (or at the very least hope) that we as a society would wise up and NOT continue to do this decades on from when it initially happened-- especially in a post 2015/2016 world... but no, we seem to only care about being right and appearing to be the smartest person in the room, but not actually using our brains to think critically about anything.

      @@matteulberg3690 the only reason they have a different tone and feel is because they have 3D graphics and different villains. gameplay and design-wise, it's the exact same series we all know and love. it's literally called "donkey kong country RETURNS". that title alone makes it an _official_ successor.

      No, that's not the only reason. It doesn't matter if it's the "official" successor, it's not the same.
