- Thurman proved he is still an elite welterweight, winning a 12-round unanimous decision over former super lightweight world champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios.
“This was a comeback fight after two and a half years away,” said Clearwater, Florida’s Thurman. “I wish I had my best performance, but I did the best I could under the circumstances. “I grade this performance a C+ or B- for myself.”
In his first fight in over 30 months, the 33-year-old Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs) displayed the attributes that led him to the top of the 147-pound division. Thurman got off to a strong start and never relinquished control, at times punishing Barrios with hard shots.
Barrios (26-2, 17 KOs) had his moments in his welterweight debut, particularly in the eighth when a left hook to the body caused Thurman to back up. The 26-year-old slugger from San Antonio, Texas also showed grit, gamely fighting back despite Thurman’s heavy artillery.
"Tonight I showed the Mexican warrior in me. I take my hat off to Keith Thurman, he’s a warrior as well. We gave the fans a great fight,” said Barrios.
Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to overcome what was a fine performance from the relentless Thurman.
“We rocked him. We weren’t able to put him down and out, but we had a great performance and a great fight,” said Thurman.
“I want the belts. I want the champions. I want to be back on top, so whoever is willing to send Keith Thurman the contract, let’s go!”

Yeah, not bad for a guy that stays inactive for such a long time. I hope Keith works hard to win against Tim, so the fight is competitive. Barrios is a tough guy. Can you imagine if Keith beats Tim and a Bud Crawford fight gets made? Sweet!
Barrios is tough just outclassed by thurman this time. Both are warriors and they both went for it just what all fighters are supposed to do. What a wonderful fight.
Thurman changed for the better after he fought Pacquiao and maybe acquired some of his techniques and made a version for himself

22:10 There is a combo by Barrios that’s beautiful. He missed both but it still displayed his skill level. After watching that about 5 times, I then focused on what Thurman did to avoid such masterful punching. Equally impressive. Not a classic fight, But there was elite talent in the ring. I think both will make a lot more noise moving forward.

I really like Mario Barrios. It was hard for me to watch him take to L's back to back. Granted experience is something great to gain and hopefully Barrios learned quite a bit from fighting the young face of boxing Tank Davis and then fighting a well seasoned OG like Keith Thurman. However its gonna be hard to make yourself relevant after a 2 loss streak. Who should Mario Barrrios face next?

Here in 2023 after watching the final press conference. Bad night for Aztec Barrios, not enough movement or combinations. Thurman put on a show for sure.

In the last 3 and a half years, this is all Thurman has done.
its a shame. Because IMO Keith Thurman was and still is a very solid fighter. His only loss to an aging but also one of the most legendary fighters of all times in a very close hard fought fight. A focused Keith Thurman still has lots of work to do. If Keith v Spence at 154 materializes, that is a very good fight. I pick spence to win but I dont see it being an easy one.

Thurman seems to fight well after long lay off's. Even though he's been inactive, he is probably still worthy to bang with the top 5 at welterweight.

Barrios looked drained in the Davis fight. He looked so much balanced and stronger in this fight. No wonder he was KOed by Davis and survived this one. Bc Thurman hits hard too probably just as hard as Davis or harder.

I do not agree with the 10oz Gloves in the class with that these guys are fighting it must be 8oz. I guess Barrios is afraid of Thurman`s Punching Power. Thurman shows he still got it.
