      Thank you for watching. We're back to eating Greek food in Cyprus as well. We are in a more touristy area, though, so there's an overabundance of American fast food and other non-local foods. We haven't begun exploring yet, so there may be more we just haven't found. Stay tuned! -Judy

    Just want to compliment both of youl on great footage on Athens & Meterora. My husband and I are very blessed to have set our footprints on 72 countries and 6 continents!!
    I stumbled on your channel by chance and have enjoyed watching your videos. I can tell both of you spend lots of effort on your narration and editing so that not every other words is ‘amazing’. I also appreciate the caption so viewers can remember the important factors! I typically don’t leave comments but i think your channel is so deserving of positive feedback. Keep up the good work!

      Wow, Yvonne, these are such kind and meaningful words, especially from someone who's seen more of the world than we can imagine! What an exciting life you both must lead! Are you full-time travelers? Thank you so much for acknowledging the hard work we put into our videos. We get a ton of pleasure from creating them, but they are time consuming. You might enjoy our other video from Greece as well, so I'll link it below. We've learned quite a bit from our time in Greece about video creation, editing, storytelling, and traveling overall, so your comments really touch our hearts. Thank you so much for watching, and safe travels on all your upcoming adventures! -Judy

      We are so flattered to hear that you are binging our channel, Tina. And we are glad to hear that we did justice to our Greece episode, which is one of two that we did in Greece. We really were so happy with the timing of that trip and the good weather we enjoyed. It always will hold a special place in our hearts, partially because that trip was when we fully were starting our adventure as full-time travelers. Our month in Italy beforehand was lovely, but we knew we were coming back to the US right afterwards to say our goodbyes to family. Greece was an "onward and upward" place for us. -Judy

    Guys, there's no tipping in Greece... When you are ready to leave, you can - only if you want to - let whatever you like on the table and walk away... This is the first time I hear about tipping in greek restaurants... Could you let us know the location/name of the restaurant ?

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  Před rokem +1

      That wasn't our experience at all. So many places asked if we wanted to add a tip. We didn't always do it, but we felt that in talking with locals generally they are not well paid. We didn't pay what we would in the United States, but we gave 10-15 percent in most situations. We were told by one Greek that it isn't the custom, but I think that's evolving, especially after COVID and all the lockdowns. Here is a quote from one of the MANY articles we researched, especially after being asked for a tip at Barrus Restaurant in Athens (Monastiraki): "While tipping is not mandatory, there are many situations in which it is expected. Because salaries in Greece are low and many people you encounter work during the high tourist season, this extra money is part of what they need to live on for the rest of the year." sofiaadventures.com/tipping-in-greece/
      We did not tip everyone like we are doing in Egypt, which has a huge tipping culture, but we feel that because we are able to travel, we can afford to tip, especially in countries with depressed economies.
      The one place that I distinctly remember was Barrus, because the service was lacking and I was surprised by the request. That was the first of many restaurants that asked, and we were in Athens for an entire month. -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie Judy. I'm Greek and I often eat in restaurants... :) Well. you made it more clear. Tipping is not mandatory anywhere - it is not included in the bill like it is in the US - but you can (only if you want to) let some money on the table while walking away (the waiter will pick it up when cleaning the table after your departure). And this sum can be from 1 cent up to 1000 euros :). - there's no %... I'm really puzzled about the Barrus requesting you for tipping (I don't know this place anyway). I'm almost 60 yo and believe me I was never asked for tipping in any restaurant, verbally or via a bill... (ofcourse I let some money on the table when I leave - if the service was appropriate)... :)

      @@inorbit8666 Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. I wonder if in more touristy areas restaurants are used to being asked by Americans about wanting to leave a tip and now restaurants are proactively asking? I didn’t think that it’s mandatory, but I got the impression that waiters would like you to leave something for them. -Judy

      Tipping is NOT expected at all!. Actually can be very insulting. More like Americans throwing a few crumbs at what they perceive as poor people.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  Před rokem

      @@jacquelinemcmanus3495 Hi Jacqueline, Several restaurants we went to asked if we wanted to leave a tip, so it was absolutely expected by some waiters. Do you live somewhere in Greece? I'm not quite sure how there is such a disconnect, but we're continuing to hear that while tipping is not required in the same way it is in the US, it is welcomed and appreciated. I wonder if waitstaff feel like they're underpaid and are trying to create more of a tipping culture, at least among tourists? Here's one of many articles that suggest that while locals don't tip, there is an expectation that tourists should do so: www.intrepidtravel.com/eu/greece/tipping-in-greece. We're also mindful of these 10 places where tipping is considered rude, but Greece is not listed among them: www.thetravel.com/tipping-places-world-not-used/#asia-south-korea
      Tips aren't crumbs that Americans "throw at people perceived to be poor." Kevin and I try very hard to respect the culture and traditions of the countries we visit and are trying to read between the lines of the experiences we are having. But Americans tip as a thank you for good service and appreciation for being served, not from any sense of superiority, and we tip at a much higher percentage of the bill in America because that is the expectation. -Judy

    Wow, this 4:26 looks like a Frank Miller's scenery for the 300 movie.
    EDIT: Greek cuisine is 100% vegan friendly. Greek traditional cuisine uses in vastly most of the recipies olive oil rather than for example butter. Tipping is not necessary and none will demand a tip. We usually leave a tip out of politeness. Wages are not that good in Greece, yet not that bad either. The standards of living are very high and the country with the good climate and the diversity of the goods it produces, rises the standards of living further higher. Greeks are proud people and work trully hard to recover their economy, something which bears fruits as we speak. But it has been a very long and extremely difficult period for the Greeks, something they aim to leave behind asap.

    • @FindingGinaMarie
      @FindingGinaMarie  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching and for your comment! I'd never heard of 300, but Kevin has and loves it! Just a drizzly day in Meteora! Some restaurants did in fact ask if we wanted to leave a tip, and we also leave tips out of politeness and in appreciation for good service. We're happy to hear about Greece's economy improving and have also seen and heard for ourselves about how proud Greeks are about their country, which is admirable. We had a lovely time, and I don't know anyone who wouldn't love to return there to enjoy all the beauty and bounty that Greece has to offer! -Judy

      @@FindingGinaMarie Hi Judy! To my knowledge tipping is not mandatory as in the US or elsewhere, it is optional. You really dont have to tip if you dont feel like it.
      They asked you to tip? This is not the rule for sure. I mean, never in my experience in Greece did someone asked me to tip in a restaurant; like zero times. None refused a tip that's for sure, then again why should he/she.
      Yeah, the economy is going really good, the signs are really positive and the perspectives alnalyzed by global players are more than encouraging; there are laudatory analyzes from all global Credit Rating Agencies for the outlook for the Greek economy. Some years ago Greece entered to what is known as "Negative-Rates Club" which is a small number of countries you actually pay to lend them money.
      But one has to be modest and humble enough and very patient especially when expecting all these to materialize on the wages, though we've already seen results. Keyword: patience.
      Glad to read that you had a good time. The Greeks are known for of being friendly, helping and welcoming people and they have this reputation to maintain, and I think they're up to this task.
      But one has to realize that to some few, business is just business. You can find this kind of people everywhere.
      Best Regards

    Hi Judy, is it true that in Athens, we should never flush used toilet paper down into the sewage system, as the sewage pipes will easily get choked up? I understand that their sewage system is very frail and the pipes narrow. I have read that we should instead place our used toilet paper into a separate waste bin for disposal? Sounds very inconvenient, if true :). Btw, as always, keep up the good work !

    • @FindingGinaMarie

      Hi Mike, we've missed you! Thanks for the comment and for watching! Some large hotels have enhanced plumbing systems, but overall, no you should not be throwing toilet paper into the toilets in Greece. It's confusing because their pictures don't always make it clear-are they worried I will throw napkins, paper towels, or tissues in the toilets? Their pictures also show not to throw food in the toilets, you get the idea. It's hard to know with 100% certainty what they're saying. But yes. Do not put toilet paper in the toilets. I know for an American it sounds gross, but their sewage systems and pipes can't handle it. And yes, there are bins inside the toilet stalls for disposal. I believe you saw our other Greece video, but I will link it here again. -Judy
