- It's not hard to get almost perfect white balance on the GH5. In this video, I walk through the GH5 white balance settings and talk about my preferred way of nailing white balance on the GH5. This is a quick look and I did not talk about color profiles or anything like that. I've noticed that some of the auto settings run a bit magenta but having something like a gray card can really help get the GH5 white balance on track.

So glad someone is still making new tutorials for the GH5. Just dusted off my camera and am still trying to learn. Great stuff man. Subscribed.
thanks for the sub!
the opening you had me worried haah then I knew you’d fix it ! GOLD … more gr8 content … thanks Caleb
Yes, I've been using the gray card custom white balance technique like you use since I had my GH2 (2011?). With so many different color temperatures of light being used these days, that's about the only way you can do it out in the field,. especially like when I filmed a band concert recently. I went down to the stage before the show with all three cameras and took the custom white balance settings with the lights turned on the same as they would be during the performance. came out great!
I'm listening to your white balance video and I love it. But also - I love your outdoor shots. Looks like Mid Atlantic/NE area. So beautiful :)
hey Caleb, I absolutely love your channel! I own the GH5 and you actually clear up at alot of problems that i have had in the past with mine! I recently started my own channel and hope to create content as good as yours!
awesome! thanks for sharing! all the best to you
man I really needed this video thanks!
awesome! thanks for checking it out.
Thanks for the video!!!
I always use auto but going to experiment with select. Auto does do the job for me but this I know is the way to go. Thank You.
Many thankss!!!
Hey Caleb, great video. This statement is so true: "I've noticed that some of the auto settings run a bit magenta but having something like a gray card can really help get the GH5 white balance on track." I shoot an older Canon 5D MKII and the GH5, I've noticed the Canon has better, more natural color science. However the GH5 rocks for run and gun video!
yeah you're not going to beat canon color!
awesome video dude, thanks for the pointers!
thanks for checking it out!
Thanks Caleb. I use color checker and the larger one you used. I did not know how the kelvin settings worked. That should be helpful. I also use auto.
awesome thanks for sharing!
GH5x. Master Class video.
Thanks so much - Gh5s and G9 owner.
it would be fun to put a class together for this or maybe a gh6? 🤔
Great opening!
😂 bloop.
Hey Caleb! New GH5 user here, have been learning tons from your videos, so thanks for that! In this video I see you included a lot of shots in a snowy environment. I like in Lake Tahoe, CA and we're pretty much buried in snow from Dec-June. I've just been using the snow to set my white balance instead of a white card or gray card. Any reasons I shouldn't be doing this? Seems to be working well for me so far, but i don't have a trained eye yet. Thanks a million for all that you do. I really appreciate the time you take to create these videos and help aspiring film makers, keep creating!
Awesome thanks so much for checking out the channel. I would say if the snow is working and you're getting good results, I don't see a need to change. Maybe just keep some paper handy just in case.
Thank you for the video. So when you set your correct white balance with the help of a grey card will that setting stay automatically as long as the camera is switched on?
Hi Caleb. I was wondering if you are shooting outside on a sunny day and your subjects are in a mix of sun and shade, should you hold the gray card in the sun or the shade to do the white balance?
Natural profile & Sunny preset for white balance. Usually I leave itset that way and if by chance if it seems off i will check it in Final Cut Pro.
perfect! stick with it if it's working for you!
I got a light meter app on my phone, i point the phone camera at what I’m shooting and it gives me a number reading and I just dial that into the GH5. I would much prefer the grey card technique though.
Exposing your grey card properly is the key to correct white balance. Any further comments on that issue? What is right for 18% grey in the Natural profile, please?
Muy importante! Siiiiiiii 🤓
😂 totally!
Thanks for your video. Good job! How do you do white balance settings when you have two gh5 to set exactly the same? With the gray card it won't work? Is there a way without a light meter?
yeah that's tough. I really didn't go into a ton of detail in this vid but it might be good to use the mode that allows you to set the custom temperature especially if you are using a light meter.
question for you... if doing a scene with a wide shot where the foreground is mostly dark areas but the faces are perfectly exposed in the distance so the card is beside the subjects face to get closer exposed area... if the card is so far away from the camera, but fills the box, will it still be accurate considering it's at a further distance?
yeah that's a great question. if i have a scene set up like this, i usually pick up the camera and physically take it to the spot that's exposed and get the gray card balance there in the exposed part and then put the camera back. might not be the best way to do it but it's worked for me.
nice video,i updated to 2.7 firmware already, get the AWBw ,really love gh5,but i hope Panasonic put the ambience priority AWB in next update, because some time when the scene is warm that people want to record real ambience temperature instead always accurate to white,
today those canon camera have ambience priority mode.
i’m pretty happy with auto for the most part but i agree that any improvements would be even better
Nice channel Caleb and really useful for a beginner like me (Ive got a GH5 and various bits and bobs - "All the gear, no idea"). Quick question? Is it better to record through separate recording device or through the camera? Im just debating wether to invest in the H6. Cheers
Thanks for checking out the channel! I would say the best possible audio will be with an external recorder like the H6. But the easiest audio is right into the GH5.
Thanks @@CalebHoover Will the audio sound better through the H6?
@@thebusinesspsychologist The GH5 has good preamps, but you will get outstanding audio from the H6 (mic dependent of course).
Do we need to adjust WB on V-Log mode?
terrific! when in an indoors setting with controlled lighting.. do you usually set the white balance with the main light that lights the subject first (say with gray card / manually setting the kelvin number) and then after the white balance is set, do you then add the additional lights like kicker light/fill light/hair light? thanks! :)
?
@@RuhkcusTV all of your lights indoors should be the same temperature in color. So as long as you match that temp, your good
Nice info Caleb, have you ever tried using a gray card and a actual white card and testing if the camera sees the information the same? I was brought up always using white but I see folks using the 18% gray a lot for their white balance. Any insights?
i have used both and there were differences in FCPX. I decided to use the white card, but I probably could have gone either way. but they were not the same
i use the gray cuz it's more neutral. i've noticed sometimes white will take on other illumination from surroundings, that's also why i like this card i'm using cuz there is no reflection. but in general, you'll be fine either way, with a white or gray card
Great video. what is the difference in using a grey card vs white card to set white balance?
usually you'll get the same results but the gray takes a more neutral tone. sometimes white can turn a bit yellow but generally you'll be fine either way.
hello together, i have one question: if i take the manual white balance and shoot a white card / grey card it works fine for this one particular frame. For example if im in a room where one side is a bit darker it somehow result the darker side of the room to be a bit red tinted while the side where i shot the white balance is fine. Is there any tips or am i doing smth wrong?
*edit: i was taking a video not a photo
About setting the white balance manually, is it possible to make the box (where you put the grey card) smaller. In scenarios where I need to film wide shots, if I move the grey card closer to the camera so it can fill the entire box, the grey card will not be lit anymore by the key light. And I refrain from moving the camera closer to the card and back again as it will mess up our framing/ blocking. Thanks!
i haven't tried to make it smaller. i wish it did but i'm pretty sure it's a set size
Thanks Caleb :)
Hey Caleb awesome video again. Just a question I never really understood before: why is it that we use a Grey Card to identify the correct White balance? The intuitive thing would be to use a white card but I see Grey card is used everywhere and it confuses me a little lol
great question. a white card or paper would work just fine. the gray card is just a neutral color and sometimes the white can take on different illumination or coloring from the surrounding. but for the most part a white paper will be just fine or get a set with white and gray.
@@CalebHoover Awesome thanks for clarifying that for me. Appreciate the work you're doing.
I use the Gh5s i shoot with 50p 10bit but my i mac cant play the videos.please help me
not sure what's going on with that.
Hello🤘
Help, please,i have a huge problem with gh5, when i'm filming ,maybe zooming or moving fast my camera frame freezing and my files crashed , i think its about viltrox adapter, maybe you have this problem??
i've never had this happen. have you tried it without the adapter and a different lens
@@CalebHoover no(, its only 1 lens that i used,i'll try other lens
I am using AWBc :)
nice!
Hi buddy thank you for this video so usefull!!! Im going always auto :/ that video help me!! I just dont understand with the gray card how you do it 🤔 Keep going as always cheer from france!
super easy. go to selection mode under white balance and stick the gray card in the box that shows up. make sure it's lit properly.
@@CalebHoover but what that gray card make it in the gh5 for the white balance? How can a gray card can setup the WB? Im a little confuse 😅😅😅
@@ShinTenshi just google it and follow instructions. It’s really not that hard to understand...
wow. this seemed a lot harder than it actually is.
😂 or just use auto
Thanks for your video about white balance. I am always using JBL white balance filter. It is small and fits in your pocket, and you make the difference with anyone who is not white balanced.
