Today I got out my MS170 that I have not used for four years. I had some Motomix in the tank from that long ago. It started with just a few pulls and ran perfectly without a single burp or stutter. How the hell can you beat that!

We bought one of these a little over a year ago - we own a small horse farm - and we have never used chainsaws (other than small electric tree trimming chainsaws). This little saw has had a lot of use...downing small trees, cutting fire wood, cutting fence posts, etc. I am very impressed as we have definitely used it for far more jobs than it is intended...it still is like new. I'm going to pick up a 271 today.

@@unclereub4024 Yeah I understand - however it is my son that uses the chainsaws, 95% of the time...he is 19 and heads off to college in July. He likes the 271 (friends have them), and he wanted one for things a little bit bigger than his 170 will handle (at least speed wise)...he will still use his 170 the majority of the time. I'm in the camp if we need something bigger I will hire someone....especially after he is off to college.

The MS170 and the MS180 are highly under rated. They can cut very well and for long periods and all size trees. They are not for the occasional use. You only need a pro saw if you are a logger or are cutting down very large trees, otherwise these models easily do the job.

So i for some reason just now started looking at review videos on the MS 170 and i have owned one for approximately 2 years now. Every video and review i see on this saw is people saying how it is just a saw to use on occasion like once or twice a month or on a weekend or somthing dumb, but i can tell you from first hand experience as someone who has been cutting down trees for about 5 and half years now and ive owned all types shapes and sizes of saws this little MS 170 does not get the credit it deserves. I have personally put mine through gruelling hours of relentless cutting day in and day out and not had a single issuse what so ever. And yes i know that it is a micro chain which means its deminsions are 1.1 with 55 teeth imstead of 1.3 with 56 teeth so the chain is thinner and smaller but by decimal its less then a tenth i think its .043 instead of .050 so really it just makes the thing cut like a razzor really fast and precise. As long as you keep the chain sharp it will do what ever you want it to. Ive also dropped very large ash trees with it when my huskvarnna 440 was down

No he was correct. It is a POS. I bought one about 2 years ago and you get a good shoulder work out pulling the cord to start it. Mine has about 1 hour of run time total. When you run it about 10 mins it stops like you cut the switch off and will not start again until it cools completely. I'm not sure how far I can throw it, but I will never have another stihl. I have a Husqvarna 353 that I have used for 20 years and it start on the second pull.

I had trouble getting mine started too, but I took it to a Stihl dealer and one of the guys showed me what I was doing wrong. When you attempt to start it, you should only try 3 pulls when it is in the cold start position. Then move it to the warm start and it should start after a couple of pulls. Most people will try to leave it in the cold start position until they hear it attempt to start.... that will flood it... trust me. So give it 3 pulls in cold start and then move it up. I told one of the guys that I work with because he was having the same issues that I was having. He went home and got it started with no issues. I was very disappointed at first because I thought I had purchased a saw that I wasn't going to be able to use, but boy was I wrong. Good luck!! I hope this helped

Premium 91 octaine, is usually non-ethanol, at least in my area. But ask at the station. Ethanol destroys the fuel lines, carb diaphragms, and reduces the oils ability to lubricate, it also causes the fuel to deteriorate faster. If your only using your saw on a casually basis, I would recomend one of the premixed engineered fuels like Stihl Motomix, or Trufuel.
