  • Exploring India's Largest Canal - The Indira Gandhi Canal Project | Rajasthan's Desert Lifeline
In 1948, Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner, recognizing the water scarcity in the region, envisioned the canal and entrusted its engineering to Kavar Sain. In 1952, after obtaining permission from the central government, the Harike Barrage Dam was constructed at the confluence of the Sutlej and Beas rivers. The canal construction began in 1958 and was completed in two phases.
The first phase extended from the Harike Barrage Dam to Masitānwālī Head near Hanumangarh, with the main canal running from here to Dantaur in Bikaner. In the second phase, the main canal extended from Jaisalmer to Mohangarh, with branch canals reaching up to Gadhra Road in Barmer. Originally known as the Rajasthan Canal, it was renamed the Indira Gandhi Canal Project in 1984.
This monumental project comprises a total length of 649 kilometers, with 204 kilometers of feeder canals and 445 kilometers of main canals. Also known as Rajasthan's lifeline or the Maru Ganga, the canal has given rise to 9 branches and 7 lift canals, significantly transforming the agricultural landscape of the region.
