I definitely prefer this box over the IR-X though I believe the UA Woodrow with a drive pedal has me covered but this guy and a delay+reverb could be a desert island rig. Shawn, you must have been a fan of the Dregs!

LoL. If I don't like it I'll send it back. I know this has pre amp tubes but I was worried that going into say a pa with a digital power amp, it might get nasty in a bad way.
Which between the two (IRD - IRX) has better cleans and mid push? I'm not really familiar with the amp range but I like this product. I guess another way to ask is if you are fan of like Tom Petty, Aerosmith, AC/DC, etc are they both equal or does one shine more for those categories. As far as metal I like (Van Halen, Metallica) but not djent or thrash metal.
Is THIS Preamp capable of more of the cleans and in betweens ? I would love to hear it with JJ803S tubes to see if it might warm up even more . And round out the cleans .

Friedman is amazing to get all this with only 2 tubes ...I always wondered about a faux phase inverter tube included in direct stuff ..but I could not afford a custom famous designer to do it - they need a lot of R&D they said ..and a lot of money - that was long ago ...though .
As josephestes notes, really it's meant to either go direct into a PA or the board, or you can easily disable the cab sims and run into the fx return or poweramp input of an amp, but it really isn't meant to act like a drive or boost pedal you put in front of an amp.
The IR-X is more of a 70s-80s Marshall sound. The IR-D is more of a 60s-70s Marshall sound. The IR-X is higher gain and tighter, with more upper midrange bite. The IR-D is lower gain, looser, and fatter.
Thanks for the excellent demo . AND the summary . It's excellent ...I think with a few tube swaps ...it might sound like the CAE+ close enough anyway...singing cleans / Carlton- Lukather crunch - that clear gain sound. I am not bringing back the 70's ... but it was a great Era ...
i bought the IRX when you demoed, the problem that i had was that if i wasnt dimed the volume it sounded very quiet.... Can you mr Tubbs confirm if its the same with the IR-D

Great video! Was wondering if you could try it with a fuzz face going into the front if it. The fuzz is the ultimate test.
What fuzz pedal do you use? I have several that are based on the "Fuzz Face" circuit. They all sound fine into a tube front end.

My ideal is Fender/ Dumble on cleans/I use a lot of chords that need to be clean er ... and Dumble/ Marshall on CH2 ...
Pardon my ignorance, but can these types of devices be run through a Fryette Power Station? If so, how? Sorry, im an old tube amp guy.
It’s a preamp and Fryette is a power amp, so perfect match.
You can absolutely run it it that way!! Just run the FX send out of the IR-D.

I think you could if you disabled the cab sim. Also you could run it into the fx return that way for sure.
