For those that struggle with the ruler method of positioning your vinyl strips or whatever you are using to mark your 1/4 in, index cards are 1/4 in in between each line. That’s what I use 😊

Many years ago, I purchased those vinyl strips. I bought them in conjunction with the Perkins piecing seam guide. It is a neon yellow acrylic ruler with a hole for your needle that is 1/4” from the edge of the ruler. Then you position your vinyl next to it. And it renders you an accurate 1/4” seam. I also purchased a second bobbin cover so that I don’t have to remove my guide once I’ve trimmed it to size. Since I only use the amount needed on the cover, my vinyl strips last me for years. I just pop off my cover and place my other cover on when I need the surface to be flat. Works like a charm.
Great suggestions. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned another option... a scant detector. Nifty little device that attaches to the presser foot and sounds an alarm if you veer outside the scant zone! By the way, I have some swamp land for sale. 😂

Sewed 2 - 2 1/2 inch squares and was ecstatic!! I tried it again, and again, and felt like I found a treasure or something! I can sew my pieces with a new wonderful freedom of confidence that my blocks will work:) it is rock solid consistent!
I've struggled with accurate seams for years and it gets so frustrating trying different options. I have a 4H group of 19 members learning to quilt; we sew Quilts of Valor to present to veterans at our county fair. Seam allowance is a constant struggle with new sewers, different machines and feet, etc. So many variables! I bought 1/4" feet with guides which help them a lot and we measure with the Perkins 1/4" ruler and add painter's tape (which some kids consistently remove!). I am excited to try this at home then order for the members if that seems a good option. I also need to make that demonstration board to actually show them the diferences that come about with various methods. I recently found your You Tube channel, love your scrappy quilt, and appreciate all I am learning from you for my benefit and to pass on to new quilters. PS: I have discovered several youngsters who really like quilting; four of the 19 finished their panel quilts so quickly, they ended up sewing two! BTW they all quilt theirs on our long arm)

Thank you Mary! During the last mystery quilt I did place the painters tape on my machine in conjunction with my quarter inch foot and was so happy with the results. Last week I was doing some house cleaning of my sewing supplies and found a partial package of the purple strips. They must have been with the things I inherited from my sister-in-law. Great find and now I will cut the slit for the bobbin case. Love your efforts in helping us to be better quilters!❤
I watched your first video and this followup video as well. I was the one who told you about "turn of the cloth" being a very old garment sewing term that applies to quilting as well...or anytime two or more pieces of fabric are stitched together. "Turn of cloth" explains / defines why we need to stitch a "scant quarter inch" seam in the quilting world. You left a very nice response to my comment in your previous video, thank you! This followup video does an excellent job of further describing the process to achieve accurate measurements when piecing our quilts. I've used those purple vinyl strips for many years when they were originally sold by QTools under their own brand - no mention of Marci Baker on the packaging back then, which I still have. I also bought the small yellow ruler called the Perfect Piecing Seam Guide that makes it very simple to precisely measure the distance from your needle (positioned in a tiny hole in the ruler) to the edge of your foot or plate and verify a 1/4-inch seam allowance. I want to especially thank you for the helpful tip you showed here to simply cut a small separation in the vinyl seam strip with an X-Acto knife if you have a top loading bobbin so you don't have to keep remeasuring and repositioning the strip every time you replace your bobbin. So easy and so practical, yet I never thought to do that! What a great example of learning something new and so helpful even after 50+ years of sewing and quilting!🥰
Cutting the strip at the edge of the bobbin plate! So simple and smart. Why didn't we all think of that? Great tip! It would work with tape as well. Thanks!
If you take a pin and make a shallow scratch on the bobbon cover beside the markings it already has, you won't need to measure where to put that vinyl strip, you'll be able to see it which will save time.
I have found that I still need to do a test first, in order to make sure the tape is positioned accurately, but that's a great option to try! Thank you for sharing!
I love your method of comparing results which I will do a little later (out of curiosity). I have those strips (part of a Christmas advent box) but haven’t used them yet. Now I will! I very much appreciated your first video about scant seams. I’ve used the stacked tape method and I have that tape w/the center red line & 1/4” marking stuck on my machine. I’ve always been a “casual” quilter and have been fortunate to be able to match seams and points fairly well. But hearing about “turn of cloth” finally explains it for my linear brain 😊. Thank you!!! ❤
You could always cut the painters tape as you did with the vinyl strips you purchased. I’ve used this method for years and the cost of the painters tape is negligible.

I really liked the suggestion of cutting with the exacto knife so you can remove the bobbin cover. If you don't want to remove your tape, buy another bobbin cover for doing other methods of sewing.

I thought your videos on this subject were very informative and I wish they had been around when I first started sewing. Nowadays, I don't stress the quarter inch, I make sure I have enough where my piecing will not come apart and final size be darned as long as every seam is a consistent size and stable I run with it. Lol And to anyone who wants to cut open my quilts and measure my seams, we're not friends. Haha

I like the term "fudge" seams. I have to fudge seams on occasion. I'm not entering quilt shows, and I've never met a baby that cried over baby-quilt seam allowances. In the end, it all works out. Love the freedom of defunding the quilt police.
I was taught a "scant" quarter inch was two threads into the seam allowance. I use a quarter inch quilting foot on my Brother and move the needle one or two clicks to the right. The biggest takeaway is to TEST your seam allowance. Whether using the tape method, quilting foot, or other system, test. Test if setting up from an index card, ruler, or graph paper. Each might produce different results. A couple companies have a ruler that you can drop your needle into a hole and then set a barrier. Sewing flannel or wool together is going to have more fold of cloth than cotton. Find your system that works for you.

Do you find that pressing seams open (rather than to one side) alleviates the 'turn of cloth' issue, or worsens it? Sometimes I find that pressing open is more appropriate based on fabric color or the pattern. Thanks for the great videos!
Why are the charm packs, layer cakes, and jelly rolls cut with pinked edges? The 5" squares, 10" squares, and 2 1/2"strips only allow an 1/8" seam after allowing for the 1/8" pinked edge. What's up with that? That's why cut all of mine using the Accuquilt or a square ruler.
I feel like it really depends on the manufacturer, but I certainly agree - they are often not accurate and that is SO frustrating!!!. The edges are pinked simply because that helps to prevent fraying. It is suggested that when you measure the square, you measure from the top point of the pinked edge on one side to the top point of the pinked edge on the other edge. I use layer cakes often and once in a while I do find that they are less than 10.0" x 10.0" but I think the issue I have had more often is simply that they are not always 10.0" x 10.0" - sometimes a little larger - other times a little smaller.
I am in the market for a new machine, and I would if you could do a full video and review on your new machine. I am a sewer, crafter, and quilter, so I need lots of function. I also FMQ all my quilts on the machine, so I need to know about throat space too. Thank you for all your guidance and knowledge.
It would be best if you went to your local quilt shop and asked for a demo on their machines. In person is so much better - you can try it out and ask questions - and then make your decision. I really do love my machine - I've gotten used to the Janome Brand, but I know there are other brands that are also good quality. Thanks so much for watching!
I think i will buy these strips. I tried the tape method and the tape wore out quickly so did not continue. I also have used red fingernail paint and drew a line using a ruler. Sharpie marker might work better. I tried moving the needle over but would forget. I think pressing seams open may may really help the turn of cloth isse but I am still going to try these vinyl strips too.
I have 3 Janome machines. Of course, I have to achieve the 1/4" 3 different ways. My 3160 is the most accurate and it's the least expensive machine! I don't have a table for it. It's potable and I rarely use it. I bought it as a backup. My new machine is a Skyline 5. I am using Mode 1 #6 which is supposed to automatically move my needle to the "1/4" position", with the 1/4" foot, (needle position 8.3, but it's NOT 1/4". I then move my needle all the way to the right, which is 9.0, still NOT a 1/4"!! So back to a regular sewing setting, back to my A foot, adjust my needle setting according to the foot and I've been using these strips on my machine. My only complaint is that I pin and the pins get hung up on the end closest to me.
It really depends on your thread, your fabric, etc. The only way to know for sure is to test it by sewing two pieces together and then measuring. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
I'm glad yours works and gives you an accurate finished piece. Unfortunately they are not all uniform which is why the tape works if the foot isn't quite accurate.
How would a math teacher grade a test where an answer included the word 'scant'? I wouldn't have any problem calling it what it is mathematically--62/64"
I don't totally agree with that statement. It holds true if all of your blocks are the same size. If you put together two blocks that end up slightly smaller than they should be (due to the "scant seam" issue) and then try to add them to a single piece of the correct size, they will not fit together. Consistency is helpful, but not always a solution when dealing with blocks that are filled with pieces of various sizes. Thanks for watching.
It's an old video, I saw on 'Simply Quilts ' and, yes, she meant be consistent on the quilt you are making so all the blocks are the same size. I tend to be OCD and want all my points, seams to match up and MEP had another quote - I think it was something like "If it's not noticeable when you are looking at the quilt riding a fast horse passed it, then it's alright." She was a funny lady. I still, however, strive for the quarter inch to be accurate. I'll have to look into the blue plastic guide you were showing.

I am using Mode 1 #6 which is supposed to automatically move my needle to the "1/4" position", with the 1/4" foot, (needle position 8.3, but it's NOT 1/4". I then move my needle all the way to the right, which is 9.0, still NOT a 1/4"!! So back to a regular sewing setting, back to my A foot, adjust my needle setting according to the foot and I've been using these strips on my machine. My only complaint is that I pin and the pins get hung up on the end closest to me.

What about pressing the seams open? Will that solve the fold of cloth problem?
It really depends on your thread, your fabric, etc. The only way to know for sure is to test it by sewing two pieces together and then measuring. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
I use the 1/4 inch foot for my sewing machine. Worth every penny if you don't have one.
I'm glad yours works and gives you an accurate finished piece. Unfortunately they are not all uniform which is why the tape works if the foot isn't quite accurate.
Cutting with the exacto - genius! When you got good results using the janome quarter inch foot what needle position did you use? Default?
Yes - the default position. I was so happy to see that it was perfect! But the tape also works for HSTs which I will demo in a future video.

I don't totally agree with that statement. It holds true if all of your blocks are the same size. If you put together two blocks that end up slightly smaller than they should be (due to the "scant seam" issue) and then try to add them to a single piece of the correct size, they will not fit together. Consistency is helpful, but not always a solution when dealing with blocks that are filled with pieces of various sizes. Thanks for watching.
It's an old video, I saw on 'Simply Quilts ' and, yes, she meant be consistent on the quilt you are making so all the blocks are the same size. I tend to be OCD and want all my points, seams to match up and MEP had another quote - I think it was something like "If it's not noticeable when you are looking at the quilt riding a fast horse passed it, then it's alright." She was a funny lady. I still, however, strive for the quarter inch to be accurate. I'll have to look into the blue plastic guide you were showing.
