The biggest problem I have with people in the west who suddenly care about Xinjiang is: where were you when your country supported all those invasions and coups and bombings in the Middle East? You care so much about a supposed genocide in Xinjiang where almost no one died, but what have you done to address and compensate the fact that over a million Middle Easterners died and tens of millions more had their lives ruined as a result of your country and your alliance's actions, which you had a much more significant impact on and duty to stop? The Xinjiang allegations are the west's whataboutism to distract from their own undeniable genocidal history.

China is an interesting place, you need to go there and see it yourself. I encourage you to go there and see the things there. Like the Chinese food, have to taste it yourself.
This is why I was so sad when I was watching the riots caused by the young HK kids in 2019 filled with so much hate in them even though they just live next door to China and comparing them with me from Malaysia who is thousands of km away where most of the ethnic Chinese here understands China. Brainwashing to such a degree is simply amazing as the West has a monopoly on the world's media and as such they are able to cause an echo chamber of anti China hate in many people by saying the same thing over and over again, everywhere in the media to inculcate an ingrained anti China mindset even though they have never been there or knows what China looks like. Unless China can fight this opinion war, I am afraid it will take 2 or more generations before the world knows the real China, SAD, At the same time I am worry that the tension between China and the US which is getting worse by the day with "Brandon" at the helm, Pray that the world will not experience the reset button.
Yes, ever since the Return in 1997, some find it hard to adapt to Chinese Culture and governance, hence establishing One Country Two Systems.
Not speaking for 藍絲 and 黃絲 here, I do believe in the current state, both the HK Government AND society have lots of room for improvement. But having 黃絲 dragging Mainland China into every disputes they could find is rather immature and risible. They even reject things with a tad Chinese influence as if the Brits were their ancestral roots. To put it in a humorous way, they basically became those edgy adolescents rebelling against their parents.

Italy is a country friendly towards China. If you interviewed Germany and UK, probably it would be totally different.

As a French people, I have the impression that the opinion in Italy has nothing to do with those of the French. In my country, I have only heard bad things, from the young people with the Uyghurs (camps..), the old people criticize China in relation to trade competition, even my university professors are unhappy about China. And the worst is the media misinformation.
Just came from a Cyrus Jansen video, where one of the comments started with "My close friend a French started attacking me verbally last year about expressing my view about China that I think he felt was not aligned to western mainstream’s, his accusation was vicious, even though I’m not from China."

As a Chinese living in Canada, I thought all of us living in a different country should have the experience of reading lots of news that are talking about same stuff but having totally different focus and conclusions. So we should know what media is. But I guess many people never really think about it.
You just cannot change the bias. When USA ban Tik Tok, people believe that it is for national security. When China ban Google and ang CZcams, people saying there is no freedom in China. 2 countries are doing exactly same thing. They would not think USA has no freedom and China did it for national security. Because they have opinions before anything happen. Whatever happens doesn't matter because they would use their opinions to understand the news. Would not using news to shape their opinions.
Surprised to see 2 men that used to live in China still thinking a country has more freedom if it has CZcams and Google. Because Google is what they use so that must be good. It must be "free" and whatever media in China is not. So Google must not in control or affects by anyone? I guess not but they ok with it because they trust it. So in their standard it is still "free', but media in China is not. But in Chinese standard they trust Chinese media more. They cannot accept that difference. The logic here is we all doing the same thing fundamentally, but whatever you do different from me, it is you are wrong because in my standard you are wrong.

Google. It spies on you and steals your phones photos to illegally use on advertisements.
I had this experience some years ago but could not win the suit against them because they played dirty by using the power of money.
Mind you they will have your personal details, all your personal pictures in your phone and other info.
Oh by the way, when you install any app mostly it will ask for permission to access your phones pictures and things.
As you cannot proceed when yoy don't agree you would have given them the right and legal argument saying you agreed to letting them access to your pictures.

As what i always say dont always judge a book before you read the the book. I am Malaysian living in dongguan but i know that china people are nice and alot of city are clean even its convenient for people who dont have a transportation when Living in china. Thanks a lot Lee and Olly Barrett for interviewing people in Milan about their opinion on China. And most of their opinions are subjective and bias and also Anglo-Saxon based information, and they have never been to China. Well done!
Many of those interviewed would have a better balanced & positive view of China if they had visited China & gotten their information from non western main stream medias.
More importantly, they need to be more critical in reading their news - be wary it's not from propaganda outlets masquerading as journalistic news sources. News/info sources from non political independent personal channel like Blondie in China, war reporter like Patrick Lancaster (Ukraine), geopolitical dark ops of USA agendas like Brian Berlectic, Richard Medhurst, and etc.
The lady and her "research of Uyghur genocide" would lose faith in her research sources if she had cast her research sources wider to include mideast Muslim countries, visited China Xinjiang itself, and read independent and/or private sources for real journalistic news/information.

To be frank, I don't give a freak about what European/American think about China; I have given up long time ago. Out of my forty years living, working and studying in the Western world, I have never ever come across with a positive report on China. Freak them! I am glad that I am now living in Hong Kong, China.

l was disappointed too. She did not follow the basic research disciplines. Her dissertation was driven by the mainstream media and she simply trusted the evidence she had. Basically, her academic work has no independent thoughts and it is just another political tool. If l were her, l would interview other people who live in Xinjiang and then check other sources as you said.

I lived in Milan in 2015. I didn't know that they have Starbucks there.
Starbucks opened its first reserve roastery store in Italy (Milan) in 2018. Although I doubt locals will go there (unless just to try out), I think tourists will most likely visit the shop.
One belief I have about life in general, be it individuals or nations, is that they are never as bad as their worst detractors but rarely as great as they view themselves. In short, we are always evolving and trying to be a better version of ourselves, nations do not deviate from this philosophy in my estimation.
It was a reasonable kaleidoscope of different people being interviewed. Well done.

However, my inner thought urges me to get back to the root of where I was come from. I am looking forward to the 2025 travel plan!
