- In this episode of the Murphy Lab Artist Series, Grammy Award-winning bluegrass guitar phenomenon Molly Tuttle plays the new Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab Acoustic models for the very first time.
Unboxing and playing the 1942 Banner J-45 Light Aged in Vintage Sunburst, Molly remarks on its resonance, commenting: “It does have the sound of a vintage guitar. This one’s amazing-it sounds so loud! As an acoustic guitar player I’m always looking for those guitars that are going to cut through.”
Moving on to the 1933 L-00 Light Aged in Ebony, Molly again finds plenty to bond with. “This is awesome,” she says. “I love small-bodied guitars. There’s something just so cosy about them. And I do feel like I’m playing an old guitar right now. It’s cool!”
As Molly recounts some of her formative acoustic guitar experiences, she also plays the “super powerful” 1942 Banner Southern Jumbo Light Aged in Vintage Sunburst, the 1957 SJ-200 Light Aged in Vintage Sunburst, and the 1960 Hummingbird Light Aged in Heritage Cherry Sunburst.

Glad that Molly is getting some love! She is an incredible artist!
Molly is one of my favorites, such a total talent
Gibson has hit a whole new level of greatness with the amount of stuff they have released these 2 months!
You found the perfect person to demo all these. I love her playing; her version of White Freightliner Blues is a high water mark for crosspicking I’ll keep aiming for.
As a complete novice about bluegrass I’m happy I found her music around 3 years ago. Wow what a journey she’s done. Amazing player and great singer. She’s just awesome 😎👍 some great songs
Those Gibson guitars sure do sound awesome in the hands of the wonderful Molly Tuttle. I've been playing Gibson acoustic guitars most of my life, and they're my absolute favorite acoustics.
One of the best out there today. Her and her band are just top notch performers
Molly is the bomb. I’m glad she’s showcasing these guitars. Love the J-200.
Gibson means; goals, to me. Thank you, you younger generation, for keeping the integrity alive.
Unfortunately to me,all gibson means is sloppy workmanship and lousy qc
After 35 years of playing guitar, I finally got a real Gibson. 1957 LG-1. Best guitar I’ve owned.
Sadly not the case with Gibson electrics but with acoustics they are top notch, what a lot of aspiring musicians dream of
Love her playing. The guitar sounds good too.
The heritage of her family is strung together with Gibson guitars…Much luv!
♥️🎵🎶☮️
I've always been a Martin guy. I have a d-35 and hd-28. I was shopping for a d-18 to have a mahogany body. I played several but couldn't find the one that talked to me snd I saw the Gibson j-45 hanging on the wall. It went home with me. Love my j-45 as well as my martins but the shorter scale length does make a difference. The martins play the same since they were set up the same but there's just something about the j-45 that makes it different in a good way.
These sound and look amazing!
So glad to see Molly on here!
Molly's such an amazing guitarist!!!
Well you got a hell of a player to show off these guitars, they look and sound awesome!
Great demo piece guys and great to see Molly. Amazing instruments, super excited to scope them out - I'd love to see a 12 fret J-45 and an L5. Gibson is back with a vengeance under the new leadership....and the Nashville Garage is a must see for anyone that visits us here in Nashville :)
J45 has it for me, great playing, what a star she is, congratulations:)
Wonderful guitar player!
This is good, really good. Thanks Gibson...and the great Molly Tuttle of course.
Love Molly and love Gryphon Stringed Instruments!
I’ve got a 1992 Gibson Advanced Jumbo, and a 1973 J-45 Deluxe. Looking forward to trying these out when they show up locally
The J45 to me is the best all round guitar. Comfortable, light and capable of a great blues, country or rock tone. I've worn the fingerboard out on my old one and cracked the headstock on the other twice, yet it still sounds amazing...and Molly is so good.
Bravo!
Never wanted a Gibson until now 😮
I fall in love with this woman every time I see her. What an amazing lady.
I wish I could afford one of these!!!!
Molly rocks.
nice to hear a bit of 'Lost Girl' in there!
Good golly Miss Molly...
Molly's amazing. Nice guitars.too. I know some people hate relics. I dig them. Nice tom see the format applied to acoustics. IMO.
I read it took a few years to develop a process that worked on acoustics, he couldnt copy and paste, certain issues kept arising, i think baking or roasting the wood at low temp to dry it out, and a thinner more breathable nitro coat then was used previously. But the better selection of wood and extra time they have for shaping the neck and such. They look amazing, sound and feel great. Like a worked in baseball glove.
@@ledzeppelinzoso that sums up the appeal of relics perfectly imo.
Super ❤
I love Gibson SJ-200 & Gibson J-45
Molly is awesome. I hope Gibson gave her one of those.
COOL 👍♥️👏
⚓️ Thanks GTV 🌈 MOLY !!!
💪WOW💪
Very smart market move from Gibson . Re introducing these at the same price as real vintage guitars so others are not profiting without them 😂👏🏽🔥
molly's got the talent
where do you get the pins they are using in these guitars? Also, what are these instruments strung up with?
She didn’t play the Hummingbird.
is gibson part of a bigger conglomerate? i don't know how they are in business based soley on gibson branded stuff.
I’ll take one of each… I’m my dreams 😝
Besides the distress, Murphy Lab version of these models sound better or have better craftsmanship?
Yes, many things go into a customshop guitar that a production model wouldnt. They spend more time and attention to detail.
Saw molly in uk with tommy emmanuel fantastic night, i even got to shake tommys hand.
What Gibson does best.
Nice....👍 Are these reliced?
Cheaper process for the same price? What a deal!
But so many Dollars!!!!!
Molly just made Gibson guitars cool.
Nah
She shouldn’t forget about her long relationship with Preston Thompson guitars.
I first came across her demo-ing vintage Martin guitars on u-tube.....
@@Lookup2Wakeup Guess that is what you (need to) do these days. However Preston made her a custom guitar and started through that this relationship. PT guitars are very fine guitars and deserve recognition and on going support.
should do a 30 min section on her. 3 min aint enough
Because bluegrassers have always gravitated to Gibson. Mark A told me that, I think.
Bluegrass guitarists have by and large favoured Martins in years past , with Gibson mandolins and banjos being preferred. It's changing with the advent of the so-called 'boutique' manufacturers building superb instruments.
I've never been drawn to Gibson's guitars for flatpicking - but the ones Molly's playing might just persuade me to give one a go.
The price, though - ouch!
Good art direction, good lighting, top talent. Why Martin wasn't on top of getting Molly first is a joke. That company needs to stop sitting on its ass.
You know you could get an incredible collings acoustic for the same exact price 😂😂😂
The fact people are paying 2-3k extra for a buzz word “murphy lab” is actually insane
They can buy for 8 and sell as much as 10, 1-2 years later depending. Small expert team builds w more time for rounding the neck, a different nitro finish, they weigh nothing and have a whole body resonance. Unlike a porsche vs a honda. The murphy lab is like driving a Porsche that only increases in value. I support the trend of making the best instrument possible not worrying about cost. Thats why we had such shit guitars in the 70s
she a great guitar player, i hate to see murphy lab screw up beautiful guitar for even a higher price
Where do you guys find these random ass people to do these videos with?
You don't enjoy this generic playing?
Random? You serious?
Scratched
Pretty good picker
I'LL TAKE ONE!
BUT I'M TOO POOR TO BUY ONE!
I'M ONLY A UNKNOWN MUSICIAN + BEING POOR! LOL
COOL GUITAR!
Relish your time being poor. O the lesson u learn that will carry you. I am so pumped I grew up poor
Guess I don’t need one of those. My 1957 LG1 looks like that naturally…………. 😮
AND plays - sounds a lot better………… 😮
