Thank you for referencing my book, "Kalamazoo Gals"! BTW, a 1942 J-45 would have had multiple purfling around the top and back. The guitar you're demonstrating (and it sounds and looks great) resembles a 1943 model. Again, thank you.

I'm a Lowden guy through and through. Sold my Hummingbird. Sold my J45. Gibsonless for nearly five years. Wandered into a shop a few months ago, and picked up a vintage J50. Gibsonless no more. To Lee's point, J45 (and the natural finish J50) just have a distinct sound that nobody has replicated in all these years. Great stuff, and always great to see/hear Ben!

I wish someone would explain on some of these videos that all thermo aging is not cress equal not even close. The ones that do it right (boucher) still retain dynamic range. Will not make your guitar sound old only different. But what it will do is give you a slightly more stable new acoustic guitar.

People who buy relic'd guitars have no interest in their own guitars aging naturally with their own story which is truly tragic.
Imagine wanting something with a 'fake' story (and probably passing it off as your own if you're 'that' type on top of that)
we truly are living in an impatient, zero attention span social media age.
also, next time guys, how about have the same models in their standard range from your shop and play them back to back so we can see how little difference it makes? for double the price....

I know from experience that sanding back the thick poly finish from a crappy Westfield acoustic rediscovered in my loft, made it sound less shitty. So I'm inclined to believe relicing would at least make a difference. Whether that's an improvement or value for money, who knows? I do wonder in general if reliced guitars spend less time in protective cases and more time in the hands, than a prestine guitars.

Idk about vintage automatically being better for acoustics. The worst guitar I've ever played was in a guitar center a few years back and it was some used $5,000+ vintage Gibson acoustic that was just absolutely atrocious all around. It didn't matter what you picked up in that store it'd sound and feel better than that "vintage" Gibson. Don't get me wrong there's plenty that were taken care of and kept in the hands of musicians that maintained them. But for every "dream" vintage equipment/hardware still out in the wild there's 100 absolute wastes of time and money like the "vintage" equipment I've personally been able to try.

I think the torrification of top is all you really need. I’ve got a 2021 1936 CS advanced jumbo and it sounds amazing. The rest of the aging is unnecessary. Buy vintage. someone should make a bonafide sound meter for new guitars, on one side the quality of the sound, on the other the money it will cost you going up. I had a really old acoustic years ago, the lacquer had peeled off, the tuners were rusty and the glue was coming apart. If only I'd have known that I could have sold it for a fortune in the future, I wouldn't have binned it. On a serious note, if people like these and they've got the money then they'll buy them, personally I can't hear anything about them that has the wow factor, although I will have to hear these in a shop and not over the web to get a fair impression. It is getting a bit snobby now like the wine market, where it's matured and the wood makes a massive difference. quaff on chaps, quaff on.

The issue with “reliced” guitars, comes down to authenticity; or how realistic a relic job actually looks. Every area where the finish is worn thru needs or actually scratched or dinged, needs to make sense. It needs to look REAL. And, though I’m a massive Fender fan, and have been for 40+ years, they are frankly THE WORST at missing that mark on this part.
So regarding these Gibson guitars, that God they are only doing modest, minimalistic relic jobs. I bet they look, feel and play awesome!

Not a signature model as such, but a sky high price anyway as if it was a signature model. Here's the rub: He bought 50 of 'em before doing a 50 state tour of the USA so he could finish the night off by smashing them on stage at the conclusion of each gig.

Brilliant idea, and they sound amazing- I'm sure they feel amazing to play as well- all that said, I doubt it goes over very well. Ppl are either too cenacle or too stupid and inexperienced to get it. That said- I forget that the market for these kinds of guitars is generally speaking the more intelligent, accomplished players- beginners and campfire pickers rarely spend 5-15Gs and up on a guitar- so maybe it will float. I wish I could get one but- it's so far out of my reach it feels silly to even consider. Something unbelievably major would have to happen in my life before I could spend anywhere near that amount on an instrument. And at my age- I highly doubt that's going to happen. I was joking with a band mate earlier today telling him that even if we became the best grunge band in the world- to ever exist- ppl don't listen to grunge anymore and no one wants to see 50 and 60 yr. olds trying to rock out on stage. If you're Floyd or the Stones doing a reunion tour that's one thing but -guys like us better just play for the joy of playing because that's all we're going to get in the end- even if we're really good. It sux- makes it difficult sometimes to continue to put the effort in- but that's just the way it is.

Relicing an acoustic is just atheastics (and price raising). In the land of "wood actually matters" (that is any kind of hollow body guitar) there is no way to "make the guitar sound old because it looks old". You need to wait years for a solid woods top/back/sides to "mature" and give you "better" sounds . These may look cool but there are no better with other new acoustics .

  • @LanceisLawson

As a guitar builder I will state that relicing a new guitar will not make it sound better. Only two things will make a guitar sound better Time and playing. Relicing is more a mental thing. Also a 50 year old guitar that's been well played yet kept in mint condtion will have that well played vintage sound. Relicing is for kids who want to seem like seasoned players. But let me be the first to tell them sound comes from time and playing.

Dumb as it is, it isn't being 'foisted' on anyone. Brand new, shiny versions haven't gone anywhere. Gibson is responding to an obvious demand for this from its customers and it gives the customer more choice.

I think that relicing is a reflection of the market and probably society as a whole. I get it that an older guitar will probably play and sound better than it did when it was new, to an extent, although there's no guarantee of that. A vintage wine doesn't always taste good, many things can affect the ageing process. If people can't wait for the guitar to age naturally themselves, and have the money to buy a reliced one, good luck to them. Personally I think it's a load of old b####cks.

You’d have to be posh-rich to buy a new nitro guitar young enough to be able to be smug about your authentically aged expensive guitar later in life - which is worse really? Some people don’t have the money + lifespan combo to achieve an aged guitar from new. I’m not a fan of the blowtorched relic thing but this is a bit different
Essentially you are saying that unless you are rich at a young age you shouldn’t get to play nice broken in guitars - seems like a bad hill to die on

    Definition: (Guitars)
Relic: (Electric guitar): Make your new guitar look like a piece of shit. Doesn't improve sound quality.
Relic: (Acoustic Guitar): (so far) Work to improve FEEL (can be done to any guitar). (Aging): Acoustics RELY on the tonal quality of the wood so aging (carefully) the wood thru various processes CAN definitely change the sound quality to begin (speed up) aging the wood to match what time normally accomplished.
    Purpose:
Electric: Take more of your hard earned money, up to a couple thousand more, for no improvement to sound.
Acoustic: Improve sound quality, take more of your money.
    Worth it?
    Electric? HELL NO
Acoustic? Only your ear can tell you if it's worth the cost.

Am I the only one on here who is annoyed by the Anderton’s demonstrators who play acoustics by striking the strings behind the sound hole? it drives me nuts. it always makes the sound thinner and more treble-y than they should. If you want the biggest, richest sound the instrument can make, hit the strings in the middle of the soundhole. And to show off that soft, what I call the ‘moony’ sound, play them at the base of the neck.
Watch the demos of the fabulous Aussie Cole Clarks for the example that most irritated me.
Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. Rant over.
