Ashley 278 the eye-rolling hypocrite that knocked out Trey on the Glass Bridge. Squid Game Challenge

  • Squid Game: The Challenge - a compilation edit of Ashley (player #278) being a selfish and hypocritical gaslighter... before karma hits back and knocks her out.
Plus, the highlights of how Ashley Tolbert (Atlanta, GA) - a Smith College graduate and civil rights investigator - infuriatingly managed to play the victim and somehow gaslighted everyone else into thinking Mai (player #287) was the villain (after Mai was the only one to call out Ashley's selfish behavior and lack of teamwork).
Most of the footage is from the infamous Glass Bridge scene where she refused to overtake Trey (player #301) resulting in him being eliminated after taking three jumps. When Ashley eventually takes her 50-50 jump, she refuses to take another jump and insists that others overtake her. The video also includes the interactions from the next day, when Mai calls Ashley out during the Dice Game for not being a team player. The third part of the video shows the next game, the Circle of Trust, with the clips focusing on Mai and Ashley.
Ashley is probably the most polarizing Squid Game player of Season one (as I found out in the comments). While the majority of commenters agreed with me -- that she deserves to be condemned for her behavior and actions on screen -- a surprising number of people have vehemently defended her as well.
But I'd like to hear specifically why people like or don't like her.
Was it a smart and strategic decision to "not go along with the plan" as the #5 position on the Glass Bridge? ("but it's not a team game and it's for $4.5 million, y'all!"). What did you think when she finally made her single 50-50% jump and then told the players behind her to overtake her?
And what did you think when Ashley said that she was "shocked" that Mai accused her of not being a team player (and she defended herself as being all about working together as a team)?
Even if it's "not a team sport", was Ashley hypocritical for refusing to overtake Trey and then demanding that players behind her step up and overtake her? What about the next day, when Ashley accused Mai of not being a team player because Mai nominated her during the Dice Game? What did you think about the other players reacted during the whole thing?
I know there are a lot of dissenting opinions so don't hold back.. let's hear it in the comments!

Do you all agree or disagree? (I read some people actually defending her ). And can someone explain why the other players didn’t have Mai’s back but instead let Ashley slide (and then criticize Mai)? I mean, damn, Ashley must be an elite Jedi gaslighter or something (maybe she used one of those Men In Black memory-erasure pens?

At least they had a plan to go across with as many people as possible. And if they fell through, then the next one would go on, and so forth.
It was efficient, and would likely cost less time and risk for legit harm if everyone were to go in order and possibly get shoved off.

There's a social media campaign going around defending ASSley and blaming Trey or heavy editing. Some ex-players like Chad and Elliot are saying now that Trey wanted to be a hero and jumped 3 times without waiting for her. Chad even said that Mai was the only one who blamed Ashley because she was in the back and couldn't see what "really" happened, when in reality Chad was also in the back next to Mai. Ex-players are saying that Ashley took her jump, which she did, BUT only once and AFTER Trey was eliminated. There's no editing in this world that could twist what Elliot, Mikie, Chad, Amanda and Roland were saying about her for not taking her turn or when Ashley said 'just chill take YOUR time", "man, he's welcome to overtake", "sh**, you talking?". Ashley also said "Marina stupid as hell" for overtaking.

I have to believe that the editing made the bridge look far more dramatic to viewers than it was to the contestants. I read an interview with Trey and he was like “I don’t blame Ashley. I kept jumping because Marina had already gone in front of me and I was unsure of the rules”. And so a couple slowed down dramatic look backs and some eye rolls combined with the Ashley voice over make it look monstrous, whereas maybe the whole thing took five seconds and only Mai picked up on her not doing her bit

Trey admitted to being confused because the other players fell so quickly, and not communicating to anyone. All he had to do was give her time to decide which way she wanted to go. she isn't just hated for not agreeing to the team plan. It's her attitudes after all. She didn't jump for Trey but after her turn she dares to say someone pass me? And gaslighting ppl that she's innocent and Mai is the shady one? Everyone there must have made a dirty choice at some point, it's not just Ashley. But most acknowledge it but there are a few who don't. Ashley is one of them. If she was a little humble and showed some "sorry" and respect, the hatred towards her wouldn't have been be this bad.

If she said it was for the game, that's one thing, and obviously it was all for the game. Just like in the drama series, the gang murdered people at night for the game. But even in war we have rules of engagement.
I agree with you that if she had said her actions were for the game and she missed Trey but she thought he was too strong and had to get him out, okay. I get it. But to try to gaslight the whole world into acting like she's the hero for "being a team player" is ridiculous to me. However, I have also seen people championing her as understanding the true spirit of the game. I don't agree, but we all have our own Rules of Engagement.

Exactly- you guys get it! Ashley was #5 on the glass bridge which means she and the players out front benefited the most from the “One Jump Per Player” team agreement- otherwise she would’ve had to make 12 consecutive jumps herself. And by not agreeing and making Trey take three consecutive jumps, she risked having everyone get mad and then make her keep jumping. But luckily for her, she had super nice Purna behind her who immediately overtook her and the rest of the players let her selfishness slide. So it was so shortsighted and dumb for her to do what she did … but obviously all those people defending her (saying “it’s $4.5m y’all, I would’ve done the same!”) have missed this basic strategic logic completely.
And another point: the next day, if Ashley was the first person to choose whether to nominate herself or someone else during the dice game, do you really think she’d nominate herself after her decisions on the Glass Bridge? She would’ve been like “hell no! I didn’t agree to any of this!”

278 (Player 05) didn't agree to the 50/50 on the bridge. Fine. This cost Trey (Player 03), who took his 50/50. Player 04 then overtoke; falling, moving 278 (Player 05) in postion, to take the next 50/50. She did not, and Trey took another jump. At this point 278 (Player 05) again did not overtake, and Trey (Player 03) took a third jump, and fell this time. 278 (Player 05), at this point, was forced to take her jump. Now according to her game play, Player 06 should not have overtaken at that point, but instead forced her to at least take 2 addional jumps, just as she did with Trey (Player 03). Yet Player 06 DID overtake, and every other player observed the "50/50" rule. 278 (Player 05) benefited from the 50/50 agreement, without participating in that agreement.
Every player, that advanced past the Bridge, should have remembered that, so that when Mai elected Ashley in the die game, All those players should have seen her reasoning. Ironically, with Mai and Ashley electing each other, and everyone else electing themselves, all the players in the die game had equal chances; unlike Ashley electing to take Trey's equal chance, in the previous game.
Mai advanced past the next round, and Ashley did not. So the "karma", Ashley was going on about, really did come to bite her in the ass, in the end.

You need to rewind the previous episode during marble game. I did not notice her until the marble game, when there were several moments showing her true colors. Just one second she pretended to be sad and cry about having to play against her partner, right one second after when scoring she almost jumped with utterly happiness but then immediately remembered she had to be sad, and she got back to crying. But she was really happy indeed. And some moments caught on camera when she just could not hide the smiles and cheer when seeing others falling down. She was just so so happy about all of that and even cannot cover her happiness, though she had to remind herself all the time about acting cool, acting sad when somebody she called “friend” had to leave. Just watch again and you will see, not even until the bridge episode.

She says she didn't agree to team playing style on the glass bridge, but she didn't speak up at all, saying she disagreed, so that's her fault. If you're going to play independent, tell them so they know they can't rely on you. As far as everyone else pretty much forgetting what she did, I think it's because it's a younger generation who wants to be all-inclusive, even though it's an individual game. You won't see people playing to save one another in a real game... like survivor. Sometimes, you have to be cutthroat and willing to get nasty. These people, they didn't want to get dirty at all and that's what wrong.
