Ok so at the end of Squid Game we learn that it was Il-Nam all along.
The final episode reveals that he invented the games as a form of entertainment for him and his rich buddies who had become bored with life. We learn that he had actually got involved in the one that we see in the show because he was dying and wanted a final bit of fun in his life before it was too late.
The ending was absolutely incredible and the scene had Gi-Hun saying goodbye to the character as he lay on his death bed. This last meeting actually reflected their first one in which he too encountered the character as he sat in a bed.
It was a pretty big twist that really pulled the rug out from under your feet but eagle eyed viewers might have spotted early on that there were several clues pointing towards his true identity.
Now the first one is that he is Number 1, the very first player. If we look at the subtext of the series, Gi-Hun is the final number and throughout we watch as he very much works his way to first place, aka Il-Nam.
In the final episode he is left as number one, he inherits a large portion of the character's fortune and comes face to face with him in one of the final scenes. 1 is symbolic on a number of levels and because it's the first place, it also hints to us that Il-Nam is number one and the one that's controlling everything.
In episode 5 Hwang Jun-Ho sneaks through the compound and he eventually finds a storage room with files on all of the games that have happened over the decades. Upon opening up the 2020 one the first player there is actually number 2 and Il-Nam's profile is completely missing.
There is no file for Number 1 because he doesn't need or want a record kept for himself.
The other players in the game also hint towards us that something is off with Il-Nam and though it's not too obvious, when you really think about it, he wouldn't be someone that would be selected for the process.
Everyone else in the Squid Game is roughly the same age whereas he is extremly elderly.

Not so fun fact: In Korean culture, you must always hand a glass of water to adults with both hands as that is being respectful to them. But Gi-hun only used one hand, it just shows that he no longer respected or liked II-nam anymore after finding out that he was the one behind it all.

@Annabelle Norwood this show top tier acting and cast from the region; more than one hand could count ... My first comment was intended to compliment the cast, the acting and imagery carried this show tenfold but if this script was in Na or Eu it couldn't be reproduced bc the depth in casting wouldn't be realistic from "payroll budget" not from lack of talent.

I think Il-Nam’s final moments were very poetic. Since he’s still alive on his death bed, he’s technically still a player in the squid game, so he plays one more childhood game with the final contestant: a bet, which ties it all together with the idea of greed, gambling and fun. Nam loses the bet, dies, and is finally eliminated from the game

    • @knurdyob
      @knurdyob Před 2 lety +315

did he really lose though? like another comment pointed out, he proved his point to gi-hun. gi-hun asked him why he did all that, and the old man told him "because it was fun". then at the end they made a bet involving someone else's life. and gi-hun didn't help the guy freezing in the cold, he stayed in that room and played along, he became just like il-nam, betting on a human life for the sake of a stupid game

Ali- "Stole" (not really since it was his paycheck) his money from his boss. In return, Sang-woo secretively stole his marbles during the marble game
the gangster- jumped off the bridge to escape the mafia. He later died on the bridge game as he was pulled along.
Sae-byok- Threatened to kill the smuggler by pointing a knife at his neck. She later was killed as she was stabbed, on the exact same spot
Sang woo- Failed suicide attempt (the scene where he was in the bath tub). Ended up killing himself on the final game

I just noticed something else: Il-Nam knew that he had to lose the game of marbles, whoever his opponent/partner might be, because the next game would be too dangerous for him. Gi-Hun became his partner by coincidence (and because Gi-Hun has a good heart). BUT there would have been a second possibility:
Il-Nam is the one who does not get a partner (if the number of participants is odd). He probably expected in advance that he would be the one who doesn't get a partner in this scenario because he is so old. Then the whole game would have been normal and the participants would have been told that number 1 was eliminated.
Instead, Mi-nyeo (the woman) did not get a partner, but she was left alive. Maybe because Il-Nam didn't want to punish someone for his/her weakness. Or simply because he did not want to give away his power to the group.
Edit: But he was probably hoping that he could take part in the marble game after all. In this case he could have rewarded his weak/kind-hearted partner with a free pass plus he could play another game. So, in the end, Il-Nam caught the best case scenario and got exactly what he wanted.

Him knowing the "lyrics" to the first game isn't a unique advantage, it's literally the game itself: it isn't actually Red Light Green Light, that's just the English approximation. The game is that the person says the 10-syllable counting phrase "Mugunghwa kkochi pieot seumnida" (The Hibiscus [national flower] has bloomed) and that runners can only move forward while the phrase is being spoken, hence why it's said at varied speeds, cos... that's just the trick of how the game is regularly played, to catch some of the runners out.

To me, it became almost certain that he MUST be involved when he announced he's scared and the Frontman immediately ended the game. Just a moment earlier, a woman also begged for them to end it, but her head was smashed and the Frontman didn't care. I actually thought for some time that Il-Nam is the father of the Frontman, but either way, I was sure he had to be in it. Also when he said he didn't remember his name, i didn't buy it for a second.
It then was all confirmed with the marble game. The weird location (why would you have to put a fake town to play marbles? ), him acting so "senile", but actually full of joy (he should be terrified to die), searching for his house...it's as if he was excited to find that his team had used his old neighborhood and it was a fun game for him to find his house (this also works with the theory that he is Gi-Hun's dad, cause they are the only two who react to the neighborhood, saying they lived in one just like this. And Gganbu apparently means something like "from the same neighborhood"). And then of course his old house had the Squid Game sign AND he mentioned how as a father, he loved to "watch his kids (aka others) play", which seems like a hint that he loves to be the person who loves to watch people play like the contestants do in the Squid Game.

There were no lawns, and something like playing inside wasn't usual due to concrete floors or just wanting to hang out with the neighborhood kids. Once they were in the fake town I immediately caught that they would be playing marbles. I just didn't expect for them to be able to make up the marble game. My dad had a friend known in our village for showing up to marbles games with a bean taco in his back pocket, which he would pull out to eat while squatting in the sandy dirt to play.

Also, it was expected that he would be attacked sooner or later if the fight kept on going, and i thought that there was no way that the one of the main characters in the series would have such unmeaningless death, so to sum it up, i thought it was only plot armor, nothing else

I think he was genuinely participating in the death games, and could have died for real in any of the games. The reason for him dropping out alive at the marble game was he didn't actually lose, he let Gifun win with cheating, and thus it was unfair. That's why he has a rematch with him later. Also, it would be unfair for him to participate in the glass bridge game, because he knew the order you go in is important, and might have even known which ones were real or fake. There was a very heavy emphasis on the theme of being fair, and any of the other games reflected that. The only game that could have been unfair was the honeycomb one, but he didn't choose the shape, he let the group he was in choose it for him.

First, he’s way to happy to be there. In Red Light Green Light, he seemed too happy to be playing the game. We are lead to believe that he is delusional in his old state, but most of his screen time is used showing how sharp he can be.

Personally I feel like Il Nam was still putting his life at risk - especially since he was to die soon. Even with all the protection and gimmicks which give him a slight advantage, there was no guarantee that he wouldn't die by accident or be sabotaged by the other players.
We see this a lot in media and perhaps sometimes in real life too- people who have cancer or some disease which reduces their estimated lifespan always want to go out with a bang without lying down and taking it. Considering Il Nam's personality, I would say this element of risk and thrill was what made him want to participate. He had been watching the games his whole life and for one last time, wanted to know how it felt to be on the other side of the screen, being chased by death.

I think you missed the biggest clue, when the front man spoke to his boss (off screen to viewers), he told the front man to meet the VIPs instead of him being the host because he wanted to be part of the game - no fun just watching”. So at this point, we know the boss is one of the players. Also, the scene that showed him taking his mask off was an old man hand. Old man hand is very distinctive, age spots and wrinkly. Plus the clue you mentioned, he somehow managed to hide and climb all the way to the top of bed frames to make a speech completely avoided everyone was killing everyone. Actually these 3 clues were very clever and consistent. It’s worth watching again just to spot the cleverness of it all. I would suggest start thinking about the front man (brother of detective), re watch his rental room, lots of interesting clues for the next episode to come. Il-Nam's teeth were a major reason for me to be suspicious of him from the start. There's no way that a poor, elderly person in Korea would have such a great set of pearlies as he did. It was thus implied that he wasn't poor at all and aside from the deadly tumour, was actually in fairly good physical shape for his age, again telling us he was able to afford good medical care which, unlike the EU, is a luxury in Korea.

Also, Ilnam gave Gihun his 001 jacket saying something like "they'll look down on you without this". At the time we thought he meant the players but he really meant the guards. The guards were most likely instructed NOT to kill anyone wearing 001, as it was Ilnam's number.
Also, I think Ilnam was humbled by the experience even if he did create it. He told the frontman something like "playing is different than watching" and decided not to watch with the VIPs. I think he began to feel guilty for being entertained by it all after getting to know Gihun and how the players are real people who took care of him, not just scum on the streets, even though it's evident he still has a bit of prejudice towards them evident in how he talked about the homeless man in the last episode.

    My theory:
Cha sang woo (the smart guy), kang seo byeok (north korean girl), ali (the Pakistani) and Jang deok su (the tattoed dude) death were foreshadowed on episode 2.
Cha sang woo was about to kill his self on the bath tub and in the game he also end up killing his self. Kang seo byeok have a scene where she was talking to a guy who scammed her (the fat guy that said that he will get seo byeok mother on China), and seo byeok almost cut the scammer's neck using a knife, in the game she was also killed because sang woo slit her neck. Ali died because sangwoo stole his marbles, in episode 2 he also stole his boss money. And jang deok su was chased by some armed men on episode 2 that's why he jumped in the bridge to save his self and in the game he also died because he fell at the glass bridge.

The title of the last episode is ‘One Lucky Day’.
One Lucky Day is a famous short story in Korea (published by Hyun Jin-gun in 1924). The main character "Kim Cheomji" has a sick wife and lives a poor life by dragging a rickshaw. One day, when he made a lot of money and thought it was a lucky day... He bought precious food for his wife and went home excitedly. But his wife was dead. He thought it was a "lucky day," but it is an ironic story that actually did not.
In episode 9, Ki-hoon made a lot of money and went home, but his mother was dead. That's why they wrote the title of the short story.
