- More than half of the children in the United States play video games on Roblox. In fact, the massively popular gaming platform has grown so much during the coronavirus pandemic, the company’s valuation has skyrocketed from $4 billion in early 2020 to $30 billion in early 2021.
What makes Roblox so popular? It’s a social gaming platform where users can play a library of games and hang out and chat with their friends. There are games for all ages and tastes - games where you raise a virtual pet, operate a pizzeria with friends or run amok in an open-world take on cops-and-robbers. Here’s a look at Roblox’s business model, why investors are excited about the platform, and the company’s plans to go public in 2021.

Was playing this game in 2010. The fact that it’s going public all these years later is wild. It’s evolved a lot. Used to look way different.
I've played a couple years after you, and it wasn't something you can mention to your friends and they would know what your talking about. The game has changed quite a bit.

@@KESTRAL23 I started in early 2016 and that is true and I can't believe roblox is already nostalgic. I even miss the old 3.0 OD'ers and the golden age of trolling. To be honest though, I feel as if I grew out of the game now. Roblox would be a lot more fun in 2021 than in 2016 because of games like adopt me, rise of simulators, bloxburg, etc. I don't think roblox was better before than it was now.
@@awesomeother5472 IMO ROBLOX isn't fun as it used to, and I know the reason to why. Back then ROBLOX sorted games by genre filtering which made finding new games easier and kept players thrilled, now the game page is cluttered with repetitive games in sorted to useless genres.
As a roblox youtuber I didn't expect CNBC to be talking about the platform. Crazy to think that it's going to IPO soon..

A lot of hype has been building over Roblox's upcoming IPO in the finance community, so it's not surprsing that CNBC would cover it. It will be quite a large IPO, bigger than all but 8 or so IPOs in 2020.

I don’t think tix was good for them but they could have made it to where a person got one ticket a week. or something like that instead of getting rid of it entirely. It used to be I believe 7 tickets for every day you log in. Now that it’s gone, I wouldn’t say it entirely bad but unfortunately not all kids are privileged enough to be able to spend money like that. So if they continued to provide free items and stuff that would be better to ensure that everyone can have items too.

I played Roblox in elementary school right around the 2008 Beijing olympics. I remember someone built an exact replica of the bird nest stadium and my mind was blown! Had a lot of fun back in the day.
I don’t like how they only mentioned some of the role play games meant for the very youngest players. Roblox has some decent shooters and real time strategy games even though they just don’t get played as much.

During the times of Minecraft's purchase, roblox wasn't really a strong candidate at the time, but at that time in 2015, roblox's technology started advancing crazy.
That's because Roblox was still not popular yet despite this game release first. Roblox was way different now then i played in 2013.
Microsoft don't just buy anything
If Microsoft buy Roblox, they will be no Mac, Linux and no mobile support. Like Forza or Halo they don't have Mac support either. I'm a Linux user.

Roblox is basically outsourcing developing to people who want money and aren't hesitant to make the most broken, pay-to-win system they can create. Games like these need more regulation

@@dertythegrower I don't think you're aware of the massive amount of infrastructure and IP Roblox Corporation holds. I've had a chat with the founder back in 2014, and the codebase they had was very impressive then. I'd only imagine how much IP they've got now. Look past the product and into the company, and only then will you find a good company to invest in.

I wonder if large and prominent Roblox game developers will end up owning large stakes in the company and how this real-world market will affect the in game economy. This is going to be an interesting observation on how artificial and real world markets intertwine for sure.

Oof, I'm 24 and I still play it. There's a surprisingly large amount of adults, even those without children, who play Roblox. Few things can beat a massive platform with tens of thousands of free-to-play games under its roof, some of which are very inventive and thrilling to play.
As a full time developer making a great living off roblox, I highly recommend it to anyone getting into game development.

Anyone else think they are way overvalued? Steam is valued at 2-4 billion and a company that's "free to play" and barely heard of outside the US is worth 30 billion? I don't care for the vision it's if they can follow through or not and base on their graphics I'd say no. I honestly wouldn't hype this one CNBC nor would I buy the stock either.
I remember way back in the day. Probobly in the first few years of roblox. I made the simplest map. N managed to make it to the front page of most popular. Those were the days :D
I build on ROBLOX, I made a few hundred but recently due to college I lost touch with it. However, the pandemic brought me back to it for a while. I think it's a good alternative for Gen Z because most of us don't want to work a 9 -5 job and we can profit off of our ROBLOX content. Get a skill in clothes making, scripting or building and you'll make dollars. If ROBLOX can penetrate Africa/China/India as the popular gaming site, then you'll skills will come in handy just in time for more customers.

The value sounds cyclical around the lives of children - their time is organized around school months - if I am correct, then we should expect a dip in stock value mid school year and an increase in usage and value during off months (e.g., summer). over last two years this is somewhat what we've seen. I may try to get in if it dips around late March and aim to sell around early August.

Roblox Est 2020 Revenue 915 million - 1 billion with a estimated market cap of 32-35 billion after IPO.
Compared to EA with a 2020 revenue of 5.5 billion and a market cap of 43 billion. Sounds to me that a lot of these IPO’s are already overpriced and speculations are through the roof.
