- In this video I'm talking with Tom Orr. He is part of Betty and Pat Satterfield's family. Tom is 79 years old and lives in Graham County NC. I really enjoyed visiting with him. I admire how he holds on to the old ways.

People like Mr. Orr are a true gem. I'll be praying for him and his wife. I could just listen and talk to him for hours. I work in a doctor's office and there are days when we're not so rushed that I can just sit and talk with some of the older patients. I've gathered so many stories and recipes over the years. I had one patient invite me over to their home to sit on the porch and drink tea so we could talk some more. I considered that an absolute honor.

@@scalefingerz A tale can be an account or story. Not just made up or fiction. Accounts of our past are enthralling. I'm not an English teacher, so maybe story is a better word but the accounts of my older relatives were treasured and passed on.

I am a widow X2 of army veterens. first vietnam and second iraq. i want to thank you and your family for helping me out of a crippling depression. because most of what you do, grow, perserve and cook was my young life being raised by my grandparents on the mississippi river banks and in the river bottoms.my granny and great-granny were healers and i learned so much special knowledge from them. delivered my first baby when i was 10 years old, went on to St Louis University to become a nurse in the army.please continue all you do and teach!! my children would have went hungry during the pandemic without the old teachings and ways..you and your family are so special!

Mr. Orr is a wonderful mountain man, strong and faithful, filled with love and caring. I truly enjoyed listening to all he had to share with us. We will be praying for his wife, Mrs. Orr that the anointing of Christ's healing comes upon her soul and all sickness is gone. Always In Jesus name. Amen

Thank you so much Tipper for doing this interview! You don't know how much it means to us! Tom can cook any kind of wild game & make it taste delicious! "Little Will Orr" was Tom's grandfather, he was known everywhere for being a great Bear hunter & hunting guide for Blue Boar Lodge. Tom's garden is almost two acres & is always spotless clean. No weeds grow there! He grows a bean that the original came from Hazel Creek, a town under Fontana Lake, & saves his own seeds for it. He also grows huge Pink Brandywine tomatoes; people here call them the Tom Orr tomato. He loves his wife & wants her to get well so bad! He prays for her every day & he also prays for others that are sick. He knows how to catch a fish when no one else can. He is a blessing to us!

My goodness, thank you for sharing this conversation with us Tipper and Corrie. I render our lard and tallow. I never realized bear fat was rendered. My heart goes out to the gentle man and his wife. His tender heart and love for his wife brought me to tear listening to his concern for his wife. I will be praying for he and his wife and will ask my church family to pray for them as well. I do hope the community will rally around Mr Orr and his wife during this difficult time.
Your interviews with the elders in the community are so enlightening. I was amazed at the fact that he rendered that bear fat for his cooking. It was sad to hear that his dear wife has cancer & I will be praying for her and for comfort for him as well. Thank you for this great interview. Hugs!
I like imagining that Corie's baby boy at some depth will remember this conversation. Maybe not the words, but the tenderness and empathy of being in the presence of an old soul. May he carry these qualities into life. Hard to believe Tom and I are the same age.

Hello Tipper & Corie , I'm up in years now about 11 years behind Mr. Orr, but in my youth I always love to be around older folk just to listen to their conversations. Even now I'm still fascinated I love the elderly. Tipper I Could see your concerns, kindness, and the respect you have for the elderly. I know you wanted to inquire about his life , but you were so patient while he was enthusiastic about showing you pictures of his family.May the lord heal his wife .God bless .

That bear fat was SO clear and clean. He definitely knows what he’s doing there-I can only imagine how great that would be.
He does work very hard & is so humble. He didn't mention any of his health problems, just worries about his wife!

He was Pat's brother in law for around 30 years & he taught him to fish & hunt. He is very good hearted & I will show him the comments. He will like that & it will give him hope. Thank you so much!

Wow what a sweet man. I will pray for his wife as well. How neat that he can render bear grease. I have read articles about that but never have seen anybody who could do it. It is so pure and clear. Meeting someone like Mr Orr almost makes me ashamed of myself that rely too much on modern day stuff to survive, and it inspires me to get back to the basics and enjoy what the Lord provides for us if only we open our eyes to see it. Yes, they are real & the wild Russian Boar tusks, (which he calls hog teeth) are also real! One of his Cherokee Indian friends made him a necklace from them!
