The Turtles - It Ain't Me Babe (Shindig - Sep 30, 1965)

- The Turtles were one of the more enjoyable American pop groups of the 1960s, moving from folk-rock inspired by the Byrds to a sparkling fusion of Zombies-inspired chamber-pop and straight-ahead good-time pop reminiscent of the Lovin' Spoonful, the whole infused with beautiful vocal harmonies courtesy of dual frontmen Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. Though they hit number one in 1967 with the infectious "Happy Together," the Turtles scored only three more Top Ten hits and broke up by the end of the '60s. Kaylan and Volman later joined Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention during the early '70s and also recorded themselves as Flo & Eddie, but were on the oldies circuit with a revamped Turtles by the mid-'80s.
Born within two months of each other in 1947 (though on opposite coasts), Howard Kaylan (b. Howard Kaplan) and Mark Volman attended the same school, Westchester High in Los Angeles (Kaylan had moved from New York as a child). The two sang in the school's a cappella choir, where Volman soon heard about Kaylan's instrumental surf group, the Nightriders (which also included choir members Al Nichol on lead guitar, Don Murray on drums and Chuck Portz on bass). Volman joined the group just before they became the Crossfires in 1963. After high-school graduation, the Crossfires continued on while its members attended area colleges (picking up rhythm guitarist Jim Tucker along the way).
The group finally got its big break in 1965 after local disc jockey and club owner Reb Foster heard them. Foster liked the Crossfires so much, he became their manager and found the group a contract with White Whale Records. The sextet changed their name to the Tyrtles (an unveiled homage to the Byrds, soon amended to the correct spelling) and recorded a Bob Dylan cover as their first single. The song's fusion of folk with glittering rock & roll was also lifted from the Byrds, and "It Ain't Me Babe" reached the Top Ten in August 1965, just three months after "Mr. Tambourine Man" had hit number one.
The Turtles hit the Top 40 twice more during 1965-66 with "Let Me Be" and "You Baby," after which Murray and Portz left (to be replaced by John Barbata and, for a short time, bassist/producer Chip Douglas). Though the Turtles had appeared to run out of steam by the beginning of 1967, the group stormed back with a hit written by Gary Bonner and Alan Gordon. "Happy Together" spent three weeks at number one on the American charts, and proved to be one of the biggest hits of the year. The Turtles' next three singles were written by Bonner-Gordon, and each hit the Top 20: the number three hit "She'd Rather Be with Me" plus "You Know What I Mean" and "She's My Girl." Chip Douglas, who had arranged the horns on "Happy Together," left the group to work with the Monkees, and was replaced by Jim Pons. Original member Jim Tucker left the group as well, after a tour of dingy pubs in England caused more than a bit of disillusionment about the group's lack of success.
Beginning with "You Know What I Mean," the Turtles' revolving-door cast of producers and arrangers made their sound progressively more psychedelic, though they were still much closer to the pop/rock mainstream than to the era's premier psychedelic groups. The group self-produced the disappointing "Sound Asleep," which was the band's first single after "Happy Together" to miss the Top 40. "The Story of Rock and Roll," was shut out of the Top 40 as well, prompting the career-saving "Elenore" in September 1968, which hit number six. "You Showed Me" also hit number 6.
Before the end of 1970, Kaylan, Volman and Pons had joined Frank Zappa's early-'70s edition of the Mothers of Invention.

I was born in 1956 and my family had the radio on all the time, loved this music, TY!
Howard had one of the great singing voices of the 60's. And a great vocal band too. They all sang together in their high school choir.
RIP Jim Tucker ♡
I WISH I WAS ALIVE WHEN THESE GROOVY GROUPS PERFORMED ON THIS SHOW
I was 10 yrs old.
I was 15 at the time. A lot of great groups and and music at the time.
Timeless!.. so glad these old videos exist 👍🎶
Brings me back to the summer of 65, a great summer.
The greatness of Bob Dylan's songwriting is evident in any rendition. It just so happens that so many of his contemporaries were also great performers, particularly this band. What a treat it was to grow up and experience this stuff when it was fresh and new. Can you imagine how startling and profound an impact it had?
it really was fantastic growing up in the 60's ... not a better time in the world to be a teen !! 💜💜💜💜💜
I cannot. I envy your childhood
I am over 50...I listen to these guys and scream and dance and drum...LOVE the Turts
I love this song!
Love hearing it live!
Howard Kaylan could really sing!
Best music back in the 60's!!!
It was Dylan's great song and Turtles' superior interpretation!!
Totally agreed!.
Please give Dylan’s version another listen , it’s pretty darn great too .Especially the third verse
Lucky enough to see The Turtles Timonium State Fairgrounds! Excellent showmanship
an blend of music! Thank you for being there . I can say what a great band! Pete
Howard Kaylan is a great singer
45's of songs by The Turtles and The Grassroots got worn out in my house. Gave away all my old 45's and LPs several years ago, now I wish I had them back, brings back good memories.
I was an oldies fan before being an oldies fan was cool. this is great music thanx for posting. great job!!!!!!
Thank you for post. The Turtles: One of the greatest group of 60´s.
How could I possibly be nostalgic for a time before I was even born?
All that you can is say you like it or not. This guy had a great voice and was able to sing the song with words being accented.
Me too!!!!!! I was born in 84 and I grew up with music on all the time from all decades!!! 50’s,60’s,70’s was such amazing music. Never gets old.
For me I think these guys bring back more memories, good & bad, than any group of their time and I love em for it, thanks for the great show, j
Love all the Turtles songs. Miss my high school music- but I can listen to it all here! Thanks!
All the chicks screaming and they stayed all cool and calm😂😂😂. They were BOSS.
One of my favorite groups!
nothing can better bring memories on a special moment back, than a certain song which he was once connected with.
timeless classic.
Now this is what you call great music!
Howard has an amazing voice and Mark's voice blends perfectly. Anyone who doesn't think so, does not know much about vocals or music. I'm actually a female and took vocal lessons most of my life. Howard's new book Shell Shocked is a fantastic read.....
Love this performance
Magnificent Masterpiece, great music & great memories of life
So many memories with this song. Born in 1976, but raised with an absolute jewel of a radio station: UniversalFM in Mexico City, They only played "oldies" and I grew up listening to 50s, 60s & 70s hits. Thank you very much for posting this gem!!
unforgetable time for american rock and roll

One of my first albums, cherished even today, loved these guys
Those were the days & the best music
beautiful song I was 3 yrs old
Nice version of a Dylan classic.Really sad tune when it comes down to it.Love it even now all these years later.
Dunno if I should count this as a guilty pleasure but as a big Dylan fan, this has always been my fave version of this song. I like the way he snarls out "no no no".
Bob Dylan Classic! Very Cool
La mejor versión de esta canción. Todo un éxito fabuloso con los grandiosos The Turtles.
Howard really had balls to tell the record company he wasn't going to drop his bandmates😊
there are no words. I grew up in the sixties, the last great generation of america. there is no better time is the history of the world than the 50's 60's and early seventies.
agree 100% ... I graduated in '70 & absolutely luvd being a teen in the 60's & a young adult in the 70's ... greatest time ever to grow up !! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
LOVE THEM!! 🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Excellent song. Brings back memories of my sister playing on record player
A classic song ... one of the best of the 1960s.
I was only 7 in 65 but my siblings were 6-8 year's older then me so I grew up listening to this music (hearing my sister begging for go go boots) playing all the time on records or tv in my house!
I think this song became my anthom in my future relationships? lol
Oh she did get her go go boots!
I was 13 in 65, & I too had white go go boots in the 60's !! 💜💜💜💜
Still love Flo & Eddie to this today.......
They gained quite a following as the Crossfires in Southern California in the early Sixties. I saw them live then at the Revelaire in Hermosa Beach in '63 and the venue was packed.
Turtles' music? As good as ever!!!!
Drummer went on in 70 to the Starship. Straight up talent from the 60s!
Thursday Nites in the Fall of '65 !
Great song!!!I was a HUGE Turtles fan as a youth, but boy, even in the mid-60's,when they were in their 20's,those guys looked old!!!(And Bob Dylan again proved his unmatched songwriting talent with this classic!!!!)
always LOVED this version by The Turtles....classic pop at it's best....thanks for posting
And 5 days AFTER they sang this song we were Married in Jefferson County, NC. This past Oct. 5th was our 57 Anniversary~~~Still Married and Still in Love!!
I loved the association too!!
Damned if this ain't the bomb !!! 2017 and your STILL rockin it !
What, no on-cue, ecstatic teen-girl screams for Flo & Eddie??
Cold, man. Cold.
The audience when Howard is singing his heart out: 😐😐
The audience when Jim's on screen: 😆😱😢😭😃🤧
This song reminds me of my Father so much............. The only recording I have of him playing guitar is of him singing this song... I miss him.. Its so interesting how Music can have such an impact on someone..
"To protect you and defend you weather you are right or wrong."I need a man like that.
sorry but it's whether" Weather it' s cold out or not?
This is the best song ever
Howard Kaylan--the best voice in the business. Why, you ask? Because he really can sing. And the band isn't to bad, either.
If u were alive, you would now be on social security 😅
Howard has a truly sweet and pure voice. I really think the Turtles were amazing and a bit unerrated. My wife and I are a performing duo and love singing Elenore and Happy Together...together!
Out of sheer curiousity, was he gay
This song was also recorded by Davy Jones on his premier album BEFORE the Monkees. He did a great job with this song also. Love it!
Thank you posting. Love this song.
Heard an interview with the Turtles Flo and Eddie years ago on KRTH-FM in Los Angeles. They told a funny story about meeting a very drunk Bob Dylan after one of their performances. Dylan was praising them for writing such a great song as "It Ain't Me Babe" and asked them what inspired them to write it. They replied, paraphrased, "Ah, Mr. Dylan, you wrote that song."
D. Brock That is funny if it's real.
Dont like this version at all. Guess dylan was maybe a little sarcastic
Harald Versteegden yeah, he was, you can find it in his book Chronics 1st (or something like that, in my country its translated like that)
The Turtles: Hey Mr Dylan where did you get the inspiration to write a song like Eleanor?
Bob Dylan: uhhh... gents, you wrote that song
I like this one better. I'm not a fan of Dylan's talk singing.
Interesting song. Never heard it before. I love the chorus. Good singer.
50 years have passed since the original air.
if there was ever Timeless, This is It!!
Bob Dylan changed my life. The lyrics intrigued me on this cover hit when it came out. Saw Bob's name on the 45 single and went out and bought the "Highway 61 Revisited" & "Bob Dylan" albums.
Exactly 3 days before my first date with my first girlfriend..... saw the movie "Help" then back to her place to listen to the Turtles first album.....
I have there albums and play them while jumping on the trampoline in the back yard with my children and they remember that still and I remember that too when I was young.
More cover bands should put Turtles in thier song list
.... Turtles did it just for you
Sounds good one of the best songs. Didn't know this was Dylan. Awesome!
I bought this record and it still holds up as a great rendition .And it's live too-love the Shindig!! :)
I love the lyrics.... and eve of destruction... the turtles simply ROCK!!!!
WHAT A GREAT SONG GIVES ME CHILLS!
Hey. Not lip-synced. Nice to see that from time to time.
Actually, it is lip-synced in a way… a very popular trend at the time was to use the original recording as playback, minus the lead vocal, which was sung live. This gave the impression of the performance being "live" while in fact only the lead vocal was live.
So, yes, technically you're right in that he's singing the lead vocal… but nobody else in the band is actually playing.
Mooseboy08
Ah, yes. I've read about that here on YT before. Apparently it was very common for the lead to be the only part actually sung ... if it was even sung.
Floating around here somewhere is a video showing a fellow in a band who played a different instrument for each "live" performance simply to show his disgust for the ban on performing. (Banned at least for TV shows.)
+mottledbrain I remember on one of the Mamas and Papas TV appearances Mama Cass saying "roll tape" just as the song began. And Michelle doing something like licking a lollipop (I forget exactly) to show she wasn't singing. Showed a bit of disrespect in my opinion.
Great rendition. I love it. Thx.
Love 60s
Howard Kaylan...great under rated rock vocalist. He was born in 1947 , which makes him about 18 here. He looks like he is 30!
And I thought he was ABSOULTELY beautiful and his voice was DREAMY. I was in love with him. Sadly, when he turned 30, he started to look like he was 60! One of those people you wished could stay young
@@patricialambert3110 Like Charlie Rich, Howard aged prematurely by the time he was 30. By the time he was 40, people stated that he looks like a skinny Jerry Garcia (another performer who prematurely aged.) Today he is 75 years old, and did have a brush with death in 2019, but is still alive and kicking.
Chuck Portz lead bassist with the group in the Shindig video happens to be friends with my husband and I. Chuck left the group after about a year. They were all high school buddies from Westchester High School.
hey kathy, how old is chuck now? where does he live. paul
Kathy, did you go to Westchester? Did you live in Westchester or Playa del Rey?
+WickedTornado Yes, Westchester High is near LAX.
I love you with all my heart Howard❤❤❤
Their studio album "It Ain't Me Babe" is one of the greatest LP's of all time featuring many obscure songs that never got exposure or airtime on radio. "A Walk In The Sun" , "Love Minus Zero" and "Glitter And Gold" are fine examples of how gifted and talented the Turtles really were. Not to mention "Let Me Be' -- one of the most brilliant songs of all time.
'65 in the 10th grade at Admiral King HS Lorain,Ohio graduated in '67 the cool years would never trade them
And for many came years we cannot forget or leave behind. The summer of 1967 was not much fun if you were in Vietnam. For some of us.
I graduated in '70 & absolutely loved spending my high school years in the 60's ... it was such a great time to be a teen !! 💜💜💜💜💜💜
(the Beatles🎸🎤 & all the others of the British invasion, Elvis🕺, the luv peace ☮ & flower power 🌻 of the hippie generation, Woodstock, etc etc)
(the only really bad thing was the Vietnam war 😢) ...
& yes, thank you so much Clyde Suckfinger for your service 🇺🇸 ... so happy that you made it back 🙏 !! (many did not) ...
Their first top ten hit, Turtles had always an incredibly smart ear for every hit they've released. Mine faves are also "Let Me Be", "Grim Reaper Of Love", "You Know What I Mean", "Eve Of Destruction" and lots more, apart from their timeless hits "Happy Together", "Eleanor" and the incredibly beautiful "You Showed Me"...
The only autographs I got back in the day AND again in the '80s when Flo & Eddie appeared at Eskimo Nell's in Northern Virginia!! Still love hearing Howard Kaylan's vocals. For my 16th birthday (1969) my folks got me a late '50s jukebox which I still have and I noticed just recently that I have 3-45s from The Beatles and 3 from The GrassRoots and 3 from The Turtles! And that's out of a 24-record capacity. Long live Turtles' music!
But I'm actually going to Wolf Trap tonight (7/20/17) to see the Moody Blues so if I get close enough to Justin and John I'm gonna beg for their autographs to go with the ones I have from them in my old "Autograph Hound" book! Fingers' crossed.
Turtles super artists of the 60's!
On this day in 1965 {August 1st} "It Ain't Me Babe" by the Turtles entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #76; and on September 12th, 1965 it peaked at #8 {for 2 weeks} and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100...
Between 1965 and 1970 the group had seventeen Top 100 records; five made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Happy Together" for 3 weeks on March 19th, 1967...
"Happy Together" prevented "Dedicated to the One I Love" by the Mamas and the Papas from reaching #1, it was at #2 for all three weeks that "Happy Together" was #1 and never reached the top spot...
Thanks for the info sauquoit. Good to know this.
Dylan wrote it. Genius. However, he had the good sense to let the Turtles ( who could sing) record it.
* Yet the real meaning of Dylan's lyrics were not actually about a guy rejecting a clingy girlfriend. ♣
@@WytZox1 He didn't want to be anyone's puppet. The girl wasn't clingy... she was manipulative. That's how I took it.
@@tonithenightowl1836 ~> That's what we all thought but it was actually an anti-Vietnam war draft era message with "babe" being a reference to the president. Yet if that was known radio stations might've banned it. I bet Turtles never knew the real meaning.
@@WytZox1 How does "babe" fit in with Pres. Johnson? A nickname? I was 12 in 1965 and not really into politics.
@@tonithenightowl1836 ~> Dylan's reference was indeed subtle and it got the song past radio station manager censorship. ☺
This was kinda a tough guy song in 65!
Always enjoyed it

does your playlist also have 435-ish videos?
I was busy being born Sep. 30th 1965 :)
52 years come tomorrow. And I just found out last week on a oldies station ( KZQZ) that this song I liked since I was 10 in 65 Was done by them. I mostly knew them from "Happy Together" Which I never really cared for that much.
Their 1965 album titled "It ain't me babe" was excellent. I liked every song on both sides.
These guys were really, REALLY good, & badly underrated! Great song!! I saw this on " Shindig" one week after I turned 19 y/o . Wolfsky9
The best version! And that smile!
awesome
Great and profoundly sad song.A real classic.

I swear, I heard a double intro when I first heard this song on the radio. but it's changed.
I so remember the turtles being on all these type of shows. Never bought a turtle album though.
they where a great band--so underappreciated today
