  • We compared three different capacitors in passive tone controls. Do they have a unique sound? Do they make a difference at all? Decide for yourself and let us know what you think!

The 22uf has the best tone in my opinion.

Of the three, I prefer the 22nf to either of the 47nfs, and the Orange Drop to the Mustard cap. Most of what is happening is treble filtering: the 22nf is allowing most treble frequencies through. Given that you can always cut treble with the bass's tone control, but not increase it - on a passive bass, anyway - it makes sense to filter as little as possible, so I prefer low values. The Mustard cap in particular gives a very dull sound.

Great comparison. Thank you. I like the 22µF.

Wow!! I’ve been playing guitar/bass for almost 20 years now and never knew this was a thing. Thanks for the comparison video!

Great! Now I know why my Jazz bass doesn’t sound like I want it to sound. I have a 47 orange drop that this demo prove to be dull compared to the 22. Modifications coming!!

I wish that the comparison was between three different readings or three different caps with the same reading. The 22UF sounds the best. I couldn't tell the difference between the orange and yellow caps.

22uF - gives an untamed character

Please correct: we never use 22 or 47 microfarad capacitors as a tone cap. Even the 22microfarad would cut off everything above about 1 Hz. The correct values are 22 nanofarad and 47 nanofarad

The capacitors are 22nF and 47nF... (Instead uF)

It's an error to put a 22nF in a test with two 47nF. Obiviously the 22nF will make the bass sound brighter in any case. a 100nF will sound way way darker with the tone rolled at 0 to 50%.

We know this and included the 22nF for comparison. 🙂

I didn't know that the capacitor also changes the sound so drastically (comparing 22 with 47) even when the tone is at 100%.. 😅

I think given a stack of 10 22uF caps, each one may sound a bit different?
