I believe that when Noel says "He wrote it in 5 minutes" he isn't necessarily incorrect. He generally sees the song as the chords/melody, hence the clip of him demonstrating the chord progression in the interview was probably what he really means by 'I wrote the song in 5 minutes'. He's said on multiple occasions the words only serve the melody. He may have finalised the lyrics on the train to be fair, which is why the final version was only played at Rockfield. Because he'd already played the lads a version on the tour bus :)

I bet there are hundreds or thousands Oasis fans here, just like me, delighted to watch you going back and researching and telling the tales on this behind the scenes stuff and audio tracks from the golden era of britpop! Thank you again!
About the bare chords acoustic track, I still wondering: is it really Noel? I saw the Bonehead tweet and I'm not an expert musician, but it doesn't sound like Noel playing style to me.

Hey CSD - thanks so much! Glad you are enjoying it
Re the Bonehead tracks... I honestly don't know. It doesn't sound very precise, and when you compare it to Noels almost surgically accurate rhythm guitar, it sounds much more like Bonehead to me. But... I don't know. Noel was on drugs, Bonehead was mostly drunk, so it doesn't surprise me no-one can remember clearly hahaha

I feel like this is maybe the only place anyone would care about this - I hung out with Owen Morris for a night.
He was in Thailand because he was producing some tracks for Sek Loso (the Oasis of Thailand, Loso is low society abbreviated. They were the working class band who became the biggest rock band in the history of the country).
By some a random sequence of events, I tagged along with the band for a while. And Owen was there. We all wanted some beers, I went and got some, and to stop people throwing bottles or cans... The beer was served in plastic bags with a straw. He found that hilarious.
I chatted to him for a while about making Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory, telling him how that was THE soundtrack of my teens. He was really nice.

17.30 I had no idea that was a mellotron! I always thought that it was one of Liam's backing vocals put through some kind of weird filter. The way it continues after the final chord fades away gives the song's closing moments an otherworldly quality.

Has anyone else ever noticed that in the "there are many things that I would like to say to you but I don't know how" bit (the "but I don't know how" bit mainly) that it sounds similar to the bit in Strawberry Fields Forever that goes, "I mean it must be high or low-oh-oh!"? I immediately thought when first learning the guitar years ago that both these songs had (I thought quite unusual at the time as a beginner guitarist) an Em7 in them and my immediately thought was, Noel used that chord 'cause it's in Strawberry Fields Forever lol!

    • @RichRobinson
      @RichRobinson Před 2 lety

I was thrown by that statement as I thought WTSMG was done on 2” tape. In 1995, it was a solid 2 years prior to auto-tune.
That said, there was a lesser known technique where engineers would strap pitch/stereo/chorus units over a vocal track and manually crank a pitch control in real-time to adjust the vocal during a mix.
I’d love to actually know what Owen was doing in more detail.

And the length of the ending notes ('mayBE' 'saves ME') are a giveaway too as they perfectly match the length of those notes from the lead vocals track.

One thing that strikes me is how different the first rhythm guitar sounds compared to the final mix.
What are you thoughts on this?

It's interesting that the engineers (Nick and Anjali) always credit Guigs for playing more bass than Noel and Owen do. The tracking sheets for Definitely Maybe show Noel has claimed credit for more than he actually did on that album. Perhaps he was referring to the Batchelor sessions when he said he did all the bass and guitars. It seems likely he would have done any acoustic songs and anything else where timing errors would stand out more (he did Up In The Sky, for example). Although the change after the Sawmills sessions from tracking rhythm guitar, bass and drums live to Noel doing an acoustic guide probably made it easier for him to argue for recording other people's parts.

@@neil7994 The song is technically simple & straightforward, but what I'm interested in is the funny story of the band members behind this song... who sung or played what part !!

Noel wrote "Going Nowhere" on a train didn't he? or was that again, one of his roll off the tongue answers haha! he does sing, "going nowhere on a train" in it though which kind of backs up what I'm saying.

Out of interest are any of the tracks doubled (then panned L&R)? If so do you count them as one track or two?

13 tracks? I doubt that mate. Just because you can pick out 13 audible parts doesn't mean there was 13 tracks in total. There was probably at least 10 bus tracks and also bear in mind everything is recorded in mono meaning everything apart from the main vox and keys was double tracked and hard panned lefy and right. Not to mention the drum bus which probably had about 15 tracks on it's own. You're easily looking at upwards of about 60 tracks. You wouldn't get any width otherwise.

he might be not remembering it right, sinca autotune has been introduced in 1997 and wonderwall came out in 95. but you can clearly hear some edits or punch ins at 19:36, 19:39, 19:42 and a kind of loop from 19:48 on.

Wonderwall is one of the worst Oasis songs though imo and gets far too overplayed. Not bad for one of their worst songs though I guess!
