Tiny in the long term plus putting the brakes on the project only delays future cost increases. Have you ever seen a project get cheaper over time? I don't think so... Just get it done already...

"preserve it for later" = costs balloon exponentially. Ever wonder why the New York Subway got built at the turn of the 1900s for dirt cheap and could never be built today? Cause it happened back then. "In the future, cost is going to be higher". Exactly.

I am not an expert on Edmonton transportation so others may know better. But I believe it is about 20KM from the closest LRT stop to the airport with no viable place to put stations along the way. No place to pick up additional passengers to gain more fares. It would be a 20KM straight line from the closest stop to the airport meaning no stops along the way so the total number of daily passengers getting on at the closest LRT stop would need to be high enough to justify the cost of the single line. It would probably cost a small fortune in fares or you would need several thousands of daily riders to justify the cost and operation of that single line. It is probably cheaper to run buses, or take a cab or uber.

    • @johngetbent
      @johngetbent Před 2 měsíci

@@pacman3556 Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. The furthest south station is a round 20km from the airport and the distance between is pretty industrial or newer developments on the very southside of the city. There is a bus that runs to and from the airport ( route 747 it costs 2 bus tickets equivalent to 7$ ) that I think is a very reasonable option for people that need to get to the airport. A few years ago there was a proposal for a High Speed train from Calgary to Edmonton floating around, I had to scoff at that because of the cost vs. potential ridership that you mentioned in the scenario above. I would love if some of these projects went through as I work in a metal fabrication shop that supplied alot of material for the recently opened south-east line here in Edmonton (Davies station looks really cool, Strathearn, grey Nuns, Avonmore, Quarters, Muttart, we started producing the metal for those places almost 2 years before they were open to ride and these projects contribute to my job security but some of the ideas are really not worth the cost in the grand scheme.

in western world, we blame, we are slow, VERY expensive and people oppose you and we are still arguing about a few stations LIGHT RAIL and costs a few BILLIONS and still takes decades to just discuss, NOT building it yet. But in China and many other developed world, which we also deny that they are developed. hahaha, in just a few years, they have completed a top tier UNDERGROUND metro with little to ZERO accidents with high tech finishes. quality of living for the people and also infrastructure is at the top in the world in just a few decades, nevertheless, high speed rail has already been finishing extension to other countries already.
meanwhile, we are still debating whether if we should have high speed rail and old gasoline cars which pollutes our world but we still blame other countries for the pollution.
Light rail in Edmonton is still on debate and NOT within budget again..... we are worse than a third world country. People may not agree but if they were really to open up their minds and TRAVEL more, they would realize the difference. But i am sure people here wouldn't want to see the reality.... Me, as a white american, I have already woke up from our dreams.
edmonton, you can do better than that.

83,000 people take the LRT everyday. I travel back home to visit family in edmonton monthly, if there was an airport LRT I 100% would take that every trip.
When I went to UofA the LRT was packed. Students use it all the time.
Edmontonians also complain about traffic, but safer public transit with better routes reduces load on roads meaning less need for repairs, less accidents and less traffic.
I live in New York now, everyone takes the subway here. NYC has a bit more area than Edmonton but it still takes 30min if I want to uber from one side to the other (same as Edmonton). Because traffic is managable, because of good public transit.

@@brizzo8697 you say climate but montreal + northern europe have harsh climates and good transit.
Plenty of people work downtown. Just because it doesn't apply to you, doesn't mean it doesn't apply to everyone. Yes, Edmonton is car centric and most people probably like that, but as a Canadian I'm okay with other people also getting what they want.
If some people want better transit, let them have it.
Transit expanding is good for pretty much everyone. People say Edmonton is dead, but more walk-ability and transit centred areas create culture. Just like in NYC, just like in Europe.
The LRT during the oilers game was alot of fun. Every spots in the city that were super walkable and centered around LRT was fun. We need more of that.
We need safer and better transit. We spent billions on new police headquarters and expansion, but do nothing to LRT crimes (and crimes in general) everyone's out the next day.
Create safer and better transit, create culture.

homelessness are a choice here in canada, they are addicted to drugs and refuse to work and this is WHY. they can simply get a job and don't get drugs but do you think they can do that? why do we have to work and pay high taxes and still are poor, but those people just get free money for something that is not necessary? you should wake up.
