“I Honestly Love You,” “Have You Never Been Mellow?,” “If You Love Me, Let Me Know,” “Please, Mister, Please.” She’s Australian and started with country-ish and pop in the 70’s, and then some unremarkable 80’s stuff.
She covered Country Roads too and did a great job.
She was born in England and raised in Australia. She has one of the clearest and purest voices ever. Some great tracks by her include.....Please Mr. Please, Have you never been mellow, Don't cry for me Argentina, Sam, Every face tells a story, Come on over, Hopelessly devoted to you, The air that I breathe, Xanadu, Country Roads, I honestly love you, Don't stop believing, if you could read my mind, if not for you, If you love me, Jolene, Physical, Twist of fate. One of the best female singers ever.
"Angel Of The Morning", "Just A Little Too Much", "Everything I Own", "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Let Me Be There", "Have You Never Been Mellow", "Water Under The Bridge", "It's So Easy", "Please Mr. Please", "Summertime Blues", "Jolene", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "A Little More Love", "Totally Hot", "Xanadu", "Physical", "Let's Talk About Tomorrow", "What Is Life", "Heart Attack" "Rest Your Love On Me" with Andy Gibb, "The Key", "I Can't Help It" with Andy Gibb"
MORE WOMEN. if you look at the video lists for almost all you tube reactors, it is mostly guy bands. just more women! roberta flack, carly simon, miranda lambert, the chicks, the pretenders....
My generation was head over heels in love with her.
Olivia first hit it big in the early/mid 70s. Let Me Be There, I Honestly Love You, Have You Never Been Mellow, were all big early country flavored hits.
Magic was huge. As a matter of fact, both John Lennon and Michael Jackson both stated they loved this song. MJ said this was his favorite ONJ song.
Our Livvy ( yes, I'm an Aussie ! ) is a national treasure .. Such a talented and successful singer, and a beautiful person ( inside and out ) too .. A personal favourite of mine is her 1971 cover of the Bob Dylan classic "If Not For You" .. But her biggest hit was "Physical" from 1981, which stayed at No.1 in the US for 10 weeks .. It has an iconic video that was released with it .. Check it out .. Wayne
@@isotopia7681 You're right .. She certainly was unique .. You can tell it's ONJ as soon as you hear one of her songs .. And yes, she sure did have a melodic voice .. So pretty and enchanting .. Just like Livvy herself !
Perfection in every sense.
This is part of the soundtrack to "Xanadu ". She appeared in the film as a muse. The soundtrack is killer. All the songs were pinned/arranged by Jeff Lynne of ELO. The film didn't do well but the songs from the film were Uber successful. It was 1980
No, half the songs were written and arranged by Jeff Lynn, the other half of the soundtrack was written, arranged, and produced by John Farrar, her long time song writer and producer. He wrote Magic, Suddenly (both hits), Whenever You’re Away From Me, Fool Country, and Suspended In Time. The film more than broke even, and the soundtrack went multi platinum.
ONJ started at 15 years old on TV in Australia in the 60's. She won a local talent contest and won a trip to England, which she took at age 17. She worked with a friend, Pat Carroll, as a duet called Pat and Olivia. When Olivia was 19, her friend's Visa expired and had to return to Australia. Olivia was born in England, so had no issue in staying, where she pursued her solo work. She had the same manager as Cliff Richard and ended up working with Cliff Richard and did lots of TV there as well. Her early music was pop, folk and country pop. Her first solo album release was in 1971, which was a covers album. Her album released in 1973 contained the song "Let Me Be There" which started her major US chart hits. She was still living in the UK at the time. In 1974, she was selected to represent the UK at Eurovision. At the time, she was having chart success in the US. Thankfully, she did not win Eurovision, which made the decision easy for her to move to the US, where audiences embraced her music. As a matter of fact, ABBA's first prime time appearance on US TV was on Olivia Newton-John's TV special in early 1978, as she invited them. Her catalog of music is varied and extensive and I think her huge pop hits tend to overshadow her enormous talent. Barry Gibb has often said that he considers ONJ the best female vocalist of her generation. She is not a belter, but her ability as a vocalist to interpret a song is absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately, not many reactors are showing her much respect. I only know of one reactor who is embracing this amazing artist. I hope you react to more of her music. Thanks!😀
She was / is good people. Clean cut and innocent as she looks. Sweet type personality and nice voice and pretty.
Check out "Suddenly" (1980) by Olivia and Cliff Richard. Great duet!!!!!
Yes!!!! I LOVE that song so much. ❤️
Listen to Jolene. Your the first reviewer which hit the subject that Olivia looks at you directly in the eye to your soul. Can’t believe you didn’t mention how beautiful she is.
This song was written for her second film, "Xanadu" which co-starred Michael Beck ('The Warriors') and the legendary Gene Kelly ('Singing In The Rain', 'An American In Paris') in his final film role. The movie tanked at the box office and critically and is considered a cult movie. It's actually one of my favorites. The movie however had a soundtrack that had a lot of hits..."Magic", "Xanadu" (with Electric Light Orchestra), and a few others...the entire film, which was a musical, had songs by Olivia (written for her by John Farrar) and ELO (written by Jeff Lynne, including "Xanadu").
As for hits..."Have You Never Been Mellow", "Physical", "Twist Of Fate", ""Take A Chance On Me", "A Little More Love", "Hopelessly Devoted To You" (from 'Grease', her big solo number), and "Make A Move On Me". Her sixties career, I don't really know. I was a fan in the 80s, as she was my first "star-crush", and 'Xanadu' was my introduction to her.
ONJ was huge in the 70s and 80s. This song was from the soundtrack to the movie Xanadu, which came after Grease. Some of her earlier tunes are I Honestly Love You, Let Me Be There, Have You Never Been Mellow, Physical, Please Mr. Please, If Not For You, Come On Over, If You Love Me (Let Me Know), A Little More Love, Make A Move On Me, and Heart Attack.
Hey Fabian!!! Thanks for playing this. I'm remembering just how much I was in love with this gorgeous singer with the breathy, soft voice. Guess I still am. Hard to really get a good idea about her, watching blurry uploads that seem to be the rule online. I have some of her albums, and there was always a big picture of her beautiful face, replete with the hair. I was always reluctant to put the album back in the stack. (Same reaction with Sheena Easton.) You're catching her late. Mike I, below, mentioned two of her really big early hits, "I Honestly Love You" and "Have You Never Been Mellow," in which she showed off her very sexy, soft voice.
I love that you found "Magic," because it draws me in with its unexpected chord progressions. From the movie, Xanadu, this song and another, "Suddenly," were refreshing to my ears. John Farrar wrote both songs, which have unexpected transitions. Farrar doesn't do I-IV-V-I, rinse and repeat. For example, with Magic, they're in D, so the first two beats are D Major, but then 3 and 4 are D7b5. I've never written that progression in anything. Farrar is a brilliant and inventive writer, which lent a kind of mysterious sound to the pieces in that movie.
Olivia had a very effortless vibrato and sang on-pitch and could go very high, extremely feminine; and, again, was gorgeous. Did you know she was good friends with Karen Carpenter? Here's a video you might get a kick out of, what with your penchant to really get to know the artists you play on your channel: czcams.com/video/Tvtb63u96xY/video.html On Merv Griffen, they recall a boating incident.
Thanks for reacting to Olivia, she is one of my favorite singer form the 70's
This is one of my favorite song from Olivia
One of my favorite singers of the 80s !!
I feel that "Soul Kiss" is a kind of revival of "Magic", "Stranger's Touch" and "A Little More Love"... Cool Cadence Style...!!!
This is my Fav song of her's ... its a slow burn but such a vibe.. great to "chill out" too.. lol
I just saw your video. Being a hopelessly devoted Olivia fan myself, I can tell you: you start listening to her and you won't quit! She IS the magic!!!!
Olivia "Let's get Physical" was HUGE!
What a sad day. Olivia Newton John has lost her long battle with breast cancer. RIP. lovely lady Heartbroken.
She was mesmerizing
Me, my fiancé and my kids just got back from the beach and we heard this song. It reminded me when I was only 5 years old when I believed in magic, and I still do…I was lying in bed tonight reminiscing about those days in the early 80’s and how I would be in a magical relationship, and I am after so many heartbreaks.
This lady was a hit maker my friend and you just had to be raised in the 80s to truly appreciate what this lady did for the music industry.
Considered to be one of the best selling artists of all time, 120 million + records, had a recent dance number 1 at the age of 68 years old. Beautiful and talented, simply!
Good cuts from ONJ - Soul Kiss, Deeper Than the Night, A Little More Love, If Not for You, Magic, Driving Music, and her presence on John Denver's Fly Away.
MY ALL TIME FAVE FROM HER. SHE HAS ALSO DONE MY FAVE DUET WITH THE TUBES TITLED: DANCIN', ALSO FROM SOUNDTRACK XANADU. 🎤🎤
You should react to " Physical"...you must have heard that song somewhere in the back of your mind 👍👍
Lead actress in Grease! Also, her best number from that, Hopelessly devoted to you - it's just such beautiful singing. Powerful singing.
Even though this reached Number 1 in the USA, it only got to Number 32 here in the UK. But the title track 'Xanadu' (With ELO) got to Number 1.
ELO had their own version of 'Xanadu' w/ Jeff Lynne vocals. The ONJ /ELO collaboration is miles better imo.
She was my favorite when I was 4! Xanadu, Physical, Hopelessly Devoted to You is her big solo in Grease, Suddenly, A Little More Love, Twist of Fate…
She was so genuine that you'd stay up as late as you had to just to hear 1 song, maybe more if she did them, she had her flaws that' she'd make fun about in her interviews and believed in keeping a positive attitude, she wasn't even trying to dress sexy and she owned you as soon as she entered the stage of how she was. I was a teen when she came out in the US.
This is 70's! She became popular in the 70's and that was the late 70's maybe it took a couple of years to become popular in the States....Even Google is very US based at times
No Magic was a hit in 1980. She ruled the 70s & 80s. She had the biggest hit of the 80s. Physical was#1 for TEN WEEKS, beating out MJ, Madonna, Prince, Tina, and George Michael.
Olivia Newton John had only two songs in the 60's."Till You Say You'll
Be Mine" and "For Ever" from 1966. Her first album came in 1971.
This is probably my favorite song by ONJ. The lyrics are fantastic. She's singing from a Muse's perspective, from the movie XANADU where she plays the role of one of the nine Muses, inspiring and encouraging the human in the movie to go for his dreams. Beautiful lyrics and song.
It was a hit in 1980, #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 4 weeks, and 5 weeks at #1 on the AC Chart. She doesn’t have big hits from the 60s, she did more tv variety shows then. Her first big international hit was in 1971 with If Not For You (a cover of a Bob Dylan song). Her first top ten in the US was Let Me Be There in 1973, that’s what really put her on a global radar. Then she had her first international #1 hit for her song I Honestly Love You in 1974, for which she won two Grammy’s. She then had two smash hits from her stellar album Have You Never Been Mellow in 1975 (the album went to #1), the title track hit #1, and Please Mr. Please which peaked at #3 on the Hot 100 (and stayed in the top 40 for 12 weeks the summer of 75), she went onto have gold albums back to back (the didn’t have platinum certification back then), and then released her Greatest Hits album in 1977, which went double platinum. 1977 was the year platinum status was recognized in the US. She was the big star of Grease, without her it would have been a flop. Hopelessly Devoted To You was nominated for an Oscar, which she performed live at the Academy Awards in 1979 to a standing ovation. She then released her Totally Hot album in 1978, which went platinum, and spawned two more huge hits for her, A Little More Love #3, and Deeper Than The Night. Then Magic, Xanadu (title track of the movie), and Suddenly. Then came her biggest commercial success with her Physical album. The title track was the biggest hit of the entire 80s, TEN weeks at #1, beating out MJ, Madonna, Prince, etc. The album is multi platinum and also gave her another top ten hit with Make A Move On Me. Then her second Greatest Hits was released at the end of 1982, giving her another top ten with Heart Attack, and the album went double platinum. Then she did another movie with John Travolta, the film did not fair well at the box office, but the soundtrack went multi platinum, and gave her another top ten hit with Twist Of Fate. According to Billboard Magazine she was #1, charting the most weeks in the 70s, beating out all of her contemporaries by a Landslide (ONJ reference there), and was ranked #4 for the 80s. She was the highest paid and most successful female solo artist from 1974 to 1984. That video is from 1980, it’s just a misprint. It was on The Midnight Special promoting her film Xanadu, (I watched it live) best musical soundtrack ever in my opinion, another multi platinum album. Magic is my second favorite of her big hits right after A Little More Love. Give her more respect. She has a 3.5 octave range and has sold over a 100 million records worldwide, and those are low estimates, making her in the top 50 musical artists of all time. Show her love. She is an amazing person who I have had the honor of meeting over a dozen times. Oh, and her and her daughter Chloe had a #1 on the Dance Chart in 2015 (yes, she still records music). The list of her awards and accolades is a mile long globally. Grease was only a part of her career, but people are obsessed with that film. My second favorite musical after Xanadu. Yes, clearly I am a fan. Try listening to her Totally Hot album and her Physical album, also Have You Never Been Mellow.
They combated with her in Eurovision. That competition where Waterloo was ABBA's first international break through.
The song became popular from the Movie Xanadu which she Stared in. That is why you have 1978 and 1980. Xanadu came out in 1980. Yeah I used to watch it on HBO back then when I was a Kid.
My opinion- Her main-stream hits started in about 1973 and ran through about 1983, while she gradually shed her ‘good girl’ image to something more... naughty. Also, it seems like any kind of movie soundtrack she touched turned to gold (Grease and Xanadu). “Physical” was pretty controversial back in the early 80s and I recommend you watching the video. Starting in about 1979, there was a huge shift in music anyway, but that’s a long discussion for another time. Peace!
I so love this song. Good memories of being a teenager.
The earliest music I know of from ONJ was in the early to mid 70's. She actually leaned more country than pop with songs like Let Me Be There, If You Love Me Let Me Know, and Come On Over. In about 74 or 75 she crossed over to pop with Have You Never Been Mellow. She had a number of other hits as well before starring in Greese. Then she did several musicals. Magic was in the movie Xanadu where she starred with Gene Kelley and did several collaborations on songs for that movie with ELO on the song Xanadu and on Suddenly as a duet with Cliff Richard.
This is a roller skating anthem.
Pure Magic.
Magic is simlly Magic! The way she sings the sound, the way it was produced etc, I remember reading somewhere that John Lennon said something like itwas the besr song made or something like that
"I Honestly Love You" in 1974 became a worldwide pop hit. Have You Never Been Mellow.
My Dad always had a crush on her. He called her "Olivia Newton Bomb". 😂
This song brings back so many memories from my childhood. I love this song.
It was actually Olivia Neutron Bomb - the "neutron bomb" was a cold war weapon that would create an EMF wave pulse that would wipe out all electronic devices without doing much physical damage... same way that ONJ could disable a guy's ability to think straight with just a look.
Olivia's song heart attack ,suddenly, come on over, please mister please
Olivia Newton John - Xanadu - Hopelessly Devoted to you - Physical - A little more Love - Come On Over - Have You Never Been Mellow - I Honestly Love You - If Not For You - If You Love Me, Let Me Know
ONJ was an absolutely beautiful woman with an amazing presence, and phonemical talent! I can 't believe you question her stage presence, etc. To each his own:)
oh thank goodness someone reacted to this. it is a bit of a lost gem.
olivia recorded with her friend pat and sir cliff richard on his tv show in the late 60s she then went solo in the early 70s and had so many hits. check out sam.. dont stop believing. please mr. please, have you never been mellow and i honestly love you- all those were done before grease
Went to #1 in the summer of 1980 on the Billboard Hot 100
Olivia Newton John and Linda Ronstadt were my favorite female singers way back then. I really liked Let's Get Physical and her earlier country music leaning material.
The songs were the switch from Disco to Dance Music. Her career started in the late 60's.
was Grease.
I saw this when it originally broadcast on the Midnight Special, a weekly, highly successful music show, back in the 1970's & 80's,. This broadcast was from July 1980. She hosted the show that night and was promoting her upcoming movie & it's music, "Xanadu". (The crowd was a studio audience so that may be why they weren't as "active" as maybe an actual concert audience would be). It is 1980, not 1978 as the graphic says along the bottom. The summer & fall of 1980 were huge for Olivia Newton-John & the Electric Light Orchestra with their songs from "Xanadu" (pronounced Zan-uh-doo). Their music was being played a lot! She has an incredible library of hits including the #1 song of the whole decade of the '80s, "Physical". Was at the #1 spot on Billboard for TEN sensational weeks!! From November 1981 through January 1982. No small feat. Please check out some of her other stuff! BY the way, I'm subscribing to you! :)
She also had the biggest selling single in the US in the 1980s with "Physical". A bit of a cheesy song but it was huge worldwide.
According to Wikipedia this song was released on May 23rd 1980.
This was a lip synced performance for a TV show audience. That's why they were so dead.
React to her A Little Bit Of Love, Physical and Heart Attack,.
Her biggest hit was "Physical", which I don't particularly like. Magic is the one I like her most that isn't from Grease. She had sort of a country background, with a song called Have you ever been mellow? There's Xanadu from a movie that wasn't successful as Grease but the song was.
Yeah she won (I think) a couple of Grammys back in the mid 70s for her earlier work.
Loved the movie!
There's actually a video clip on CZcams (sorry I don't have the link) of ONJ, ABBA, and Andy Gibb (younger brother of The Bee Gees) from a TV show they did together. They may have been competing for the same audience, but they seemed to be friendly with each other.
Gawd she's gorgeous! ♥
ON-J gave you the same look Agnetha gave you in SOS, to which you said: "I think I'm falling in love." Same star qualities.
I recommend checking out the rest of the xanadu soundtrack especially Suspended in Time. Soul Kiss is definitely a song worth checking out as well. other songs I suggest are I Need Love, I Honestly Love You, A Little More Love, and I could go on and on. Also her song Physical spent 10 weeks at number 1 on the charts and is the number one single of the entire 80's.
I was 14 years old and desperately in love with her. She was so beautiful. She's a thoroughly nice person and does wonderful things for cancer research
A small selection of my favorite ONJ songs:
A Little More Love
Deeper Than the Night
Have You Never Been Mellow
Don't Stop Believin'
If You Love Me Let Me Know
Let Me Be There
Please Mr. Please
Physical
Thanks for the reaction!
Crowds were silent and not engaging during the televised audiences in the 1970’s and early 1980’s BEFORE MTV. Once MTV arrived, that’s when the crowds got hyped
1980 exactly. The soundtrack was bigger than the movie Xanadu.
Fab, check out Olivia's I HONESTLY LOVE YOU. When you are watching it, realize Liv is singing this song to ME!!!!! At least that's how I feel whenever I watch her sing this song.
Olivia Newton-John was huge and her single physical was the top song of the decade in the 1980s surpassing even Michael Jackson. Although I do like magic much better.
Before she hit big in Grease she mainly was on the light country side of music in the U.S. Often doing covers.of course here in Australia she was big before that.
Beautiful soul we are so sad in Australia
Grea... Thanks!!!
Olivia, pretty, sweet, talented, beautiful, but strong voice. She still looks great, and is living so healthy these days, even with fighting cancer . Classy, and sexy always. ♡
This definitely came out in 1980. In 1978 she was busy with Grease.
All over trhe place, are you MAD! Anyway, not only is she a very atractive lady, but that song is oh so SWEET!
Watch ZANADU, it is an awesome movie and this song is from that movie or this song was in that movie, witch ever came first.. XANADU was where i first heard this song..
Check out her 1978 album "Totally Hot" she rocks!!
It was definitely 1980, not 1978 😀
Check out Xanadu! And Two of a Kind!
Olivia Newton John and Karen Carpenter were BFF's.
Olivia remembers Karen: czcams.com/video/V-xDxhUlO3w/video.html
Together in interview on The Tonight Show: czcams.com/video/Tvtb63u96xY/video.html
Golden Australian goddess
She and Karen Carpenter were close friends.
...man... if that video and song by this babe doesn't give you a bone... you ain't alive... although if I was in the audience back in time...I'd be sitting there stunned... she was in a weird British sci-fi comedy musical thing...kind of a Monkey's style nutty 1960-early '70's movie... called Toomorrow
Songs by Oliva Newton joke hopelessly devoted to you, please mister please, never been mellow , I honestly love you and rest you love on me also suddenly. My list of some of her songs
This song has a dreamy sexy quality to it. Have always loved it, and her.
Please React to the song Suddenly from Xanadu, it is a good song and so is the song called Dancin'
Shes extremely easy on the eyes too.
Recommendations, where to start
Let me be there
If you love me let me know
To her latest release with her daughter Chloe called window in the wall
This lady could make a dictionary sound sexy and classy

This song was in the 70’s not the 80’s.
*As a young boy seeing Olivia for the first time I realized that girls might not have the cooties after all....*
She also got Sam, bank of Ohio, suddenly.❤She is gone now.
Please check ou let me be there by Olivia Newton John 💜💜
1980
What. She's not that old, my friend....60s she was a little girl or young. Grease has great music in it.
I was 12 yo when this came out. Olivia on TV was not fair to someone's who's hormones were out of control.
'1978' is just an error. It's 1980 for sure.
Read between the lines. Magic is a dirty song.
ya but she is hot as hell !!!!!! lol
its wrong, that was definitely 1980
