This was Holland, Arnhem, Gelredome. During the Sick of the Studio Tour. This was my first time I ever got to see Metallica live. They celebrated the 20th anniversary of Master of Puppets, so they played the whole album live. I remember the heat. Man, I allmost fainted in the crowd, but some people pulled me up and I moved to a better place to breathe and drink some water. They also played the "New Song" (Death is Not The End). They released Death Magnetic a few years later. The New Song appeared to be a compilation/blueprint of Death Magnetic, most of the riffs in the New Song were used in Death Magnetic. A pretty fucking awesome 'welcome to the family' in my teenage years it was. I never forget that. :)
This is by far one of my favorite Metallica compositions, every time I hear it I think of the bus accident and of Cliff, and when I start to get lost in the music, I think to myself, what do Kirk James and Lars feel when they play it? I know must be really into it, 'specially around 4:05 and the second part. May the spirit of one of the greatest bass players of all live forever in our hearts, may Cliff live on forever in his afterlife. \m/
you forgot one thing. ever thought about what rob thinks? he's playing the greatest masterpiece of his idol cliff...i think u can see and hear how grateful he is.. RIP clifford lee burton...
The Last time that song sounded that good, Cliff was playing it.Trujillo is amazing and has been for a long time. Suicidal,Infectious Grooves now Metallica
I think it's cool that Kirk has all of the solos because if you read the liner notes in Master Of Puppets James has a solo in the song. The 2nd solo I believe it is.
Jason only had writing credits for one of the songs on the black album, so you can't really give him much credit for that. He was essentially a session musician for them; he played what he was told. This is not to take anything away from Jason, he was an awesome bass player, and cam across as a really good guy. Tallica just bullied him and didnt let him write any of the music.
I think it must have been difficult for Rob to have to do all his work as bassist thinking that the other members wanted it to be like Cliff, by the way he plays, I remember the first time Rob played Orion .... was a mess, but I can say this time you can appreciate their good work with the low ROB GJ
Yeah i agree with you...they probably think they get a lower crunching sound..but honestly some of the riffs aren't even that clear anymore. I prefer the sound of the album too.
okay, jason was a session musician... cliff was a god, any classical influence in their stuff was cliff... notice as soon as he died it went back to more cromatic style riffing?
Jason Newsted was a very Cool Bass Player for Metallica, but I Have not listen much of him Live, just in studio so I Can't really tell, He's Pretty Cool Though...
i would have to say that rob is a pretty good placement for cliff. but cliff would still be a better placement then rob. man i wish Cliff was still here in metallica =(
Does anyone else think Kirk was off-pitch on his solo at 7:21-7:25? His guitar really screeched there. But a great song though; fantastic instrumental.
I love Cliff, and always will respect him. BUT, Rob is a fucking great replacement, they couldn't have found any better! Maybe Myoung, but he's busy... :P hehe;)
@pauliegtm If you listen to the main riff in the beginning with headphones or good speakers you can hear that Kirk is out of tune... Compared to when they play the exact riff right before his first solo.
lol my ears are fine, I appreciate your opinion but you have to understand that if you come onto a Metallica vidand slate it then a few people are bound to get defensive over their favorite band. Metallica still kick ass.
It's good except for the fact that Kirk seemed to screw up part of the first solo after the bass + harmony guitars part in the middle, and then continued to play a shitty improvised solo. Other than that.. Beautful.

god its wonderful to have them back. great song these guys are the best.
I always said he is great.
Metallica owns everything, I love 'em
Cliff Burton; Forever in our hearts! R.I.P.
\m/
suboib! one of their best songs live, and its awesome to see a bass solo in a metallica song
Yes, you're right. It's the first time they've played it since something in the late 80s. But it's still great - all hail to Cliff Burton!
Playing this song with my band soon. Learning the very end solo.
This is GREAT!
Love it!
@PerryLadVids Yes. All the records of MOP. Great, great concert. Banged my head off.

first time i hear them playing the full version of orion live
you forgot one thing.
ever thought about what rob thinks?
he's playing the greatest masterpiece of his idol cliff...i think u can see and hear how grateful he is..
RIP clifford lee burton...
probably the best instrumental ever made
The Last time that song sounded that good, Cliff was playing it.Trujillo is amazing and has been for a long time. Suicidal,Infectious Grooves now Metallica
Metallica RULES! May they last another 30 years.
the best song around this fucken world. yeah
I think it's cool that Kirk has all of the solos because if you read the liner notes in Master Of Puppets James has a solo in the song. The 2nd solo I believe it is.
wtf man he played this prefectly
hopefully robert will play that riff when i go see metallica this december
IMO the best Instrumental ever. Ranking:
1. Orion
2. The Call of Ktulu
3. To Live Is to Die
And by tab I meant the opening bass line, not Orion.
well they might be, but i like his thicker cymbals like the a's he use to have or z's but i still dig his style now to
god i miss this metallica...
Metallica is the best fucking heavy metal band ever. RIP Cliff
amen

Cara! Para quem esteve nesse show foram 8 minutos de puro delirio

4:02-4:08 you can just see in james face how he was having flash backs of playing with cliff
Awesome song. But i like the fast parts best ^^
Agreed.
Rob played it quite well
man come on this performance is great!
nothing to say about it
and kirk is still the best
Cliiiiiiiiiiff, I wish you were here now xd
its a white strap that he uses so the last 3 strings dont cut his hand when he palm mutes..
so fucking heavy!!!
yeah. he just zoomed in onto the screen.
i doubt they will never give the same performance as on the album without Cliff
cliff is the masterrrrrrrrrrrrr
Yeah i agree with you...they probably think they get a lower crunching sound..but honestly some of the riffs aren't even that clear anymore. I prefer the sound of the album too.
lars should use thicker cymbles because those look like thin crashes
was that opening bass riff based of something it was fuckoin sweet
okay, jason was a session musician... cliff was a god, any classical influence in their stuff was cliff... notice as soon as he died it went back to more cromatic style riffing?
Surely its just 'Call Of Ktulu', and 'Orion'...because 'to live is to die' has some lyrics...even though they're spoken
Jason Newsted was a very Cool Bass Player for Metallica, but I Have not listen much of him Live, just in studio so I Can't really tell, He's Pretty Cool Though...
Is there a tab for this? This is awesome.
i bet he is! he and james were best friends!;)
cliff never played this song live
can sum1 tell me wut effect hes using during the beginning when hes doin the bass solo?
he always changes guitar at this part of orion ;)
i would have to say that rob is a pretty good placement for cliff. but cliff would still be a better placement then rob.
man i wish Cliff was still here in metallica =(
Yeah, James looks 50 or something... But he was born in 1963, and this is from 2006. 43 years... He looks older... fuck :(
No Rob 43 James 51!!!!
i miss metallia with cliff
It was the full song man, slower section missed? did you see the full video..?
@pauliegtm And when they strum Ab to Eb to Cb you see James look at kirk Like... " Wtf? What are you doing?" lol
robert trujillo rules!!!
God Bless Cliff Burton
Does anyone else think Kirk was off-pitch on his solo at 7:21-7:25? His guitar really screeched there. But a great song though; fantastic instrumental.
I love Cliff, and always will respect him.
BUT, Rob is a fucking great replacement, they couldn't have found any better! Maybe Myoung, but he's busy... :P hehe;)
i bet they all thought of cliff when they played this song
what is that white thing kirk got on his hand? 6:30
where goes kirk to at 2,58 ??
is his guitar broken ?
@pauliegtm If you listen to the main riff in the beginning with headphones or good speakers you can hear that Kirk is out of tune... Compared to when they play the exact riff right before his first solo.
Sorry, Your right my Bad. I guess James just looks older.....
his wireless cut out
what are the 3
7:35
Most fucking epic thing in the world, only second to sex
you mean tuning down?
But Rob play it very good too.
fuck..what's that !! look at old orion records..
can you?
They are getting a little rusty. I am hoping
Rob Trujillo will help them write new material he is younger and more driven.
i thought they were mediums
I think self improve that didn't work out well ;P
GIEF CLIFF BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!
@omnipotent1995 Totally, gonna shake his hands, then have a beer with him and Jesus. XD
2:57 wtf?
lol my ears are fine, I appreciate your opinion but you have to understand that if you come onto a Metallica vidand slate it then a few people are bound to get defensive over their favorite band. Metallica still kick ass.
he's broken a string, and its not the same guitar.
the song would actually work a little better if they ended the song on an A chord.
Don't Compare Burton with Trujillo, Both are Good in different ways but Cliff is a Legend and Trujillo Ruined Blizzard of Ozz... \m/
It's good except for the fact that Kirk seemed to screw up part of the first solo after the bass + harmony guitars part in the middle, and then continued to play a shitty improvised solo. Other than that.. Beautful.
SPAMMYWHOSPAM I dont want to be perceived as rude but I couldn't disagree more with your post.
Jason was always on a bad mood something i hated that and was glad that he flee away and i love Robert i thing he´s much better than Jason on the bass
No
But he's nothing compared to the allmighty Cliff Burton
I'm sure that you know better, so go and teach Metallica how to play Orion
