1. Don't expect to get anywhere quickly in Sao Paulo. With so many people, cars and craziness it will take you longer than what google says it will to get anywhere.
2. Don't skip the Mercado Municipal! This Sao Paulo tradition is amazing. From amazing fruit to the best bologna or sorry Mortadella sandwich you ever ate.
3. Don't skip out on eating non-Brazilian food while in Sao Paulo. There are tons of amazing places, foods, restaurants and styles for you to enjoy!
4. Don't lose your wits. Pay attention! Sao Paulo has a reputation for crime for a reason.
5. Don't expect a beach vacation. Sao Paulo is not a Brazilian beach city, it is a cultural, shopping, museum, business hub for South America.

I'm from Argentina and I lived in São Paulo for 5 months. Did all those things, went to all of those places, ate all those dishes (I don't eat meat anymore but I did back then). This video is spot on. If you're like me (someone who likes museums and multiculturalism more than beaches and the sea) São Paulo is the most amazing city in Brazil.

I visited Sao Paulo for the 1st time in 2016! I don't speak any Brazilian Portugese, but no one looked at me ever as if I "didn't belong"! No one ever tried to "pick my pocket"! And even when I was shopping, I was able to buy things easily, all the people I met were quite Friendly! If you want a lovely "beach experience" aside from Rio, the island of Ilhabela or Morro de Sao Paulo, both on the coast of Brazil, are Wonderful and the Warmest Ocean water I've ever felt! And the food there is Fabulous!!!
I was born in São Paulo and lived here all my life, and it's pretty interesting to watch people from other places talking about their experiences in a city I'm so familiar with. And you're absolutely right about every thing. It's horrible not being able to move around the city quickly, especially when you're always late like me. I was never robbed in my life, but you're right, you have to pay attention to those kind of things. But generally, it's a wonderful city, we have loads of theatres and museums and a big range of culture in general (not to mention the parks) . I totally recommend to anyone.

I am from São Paulo. Just to correct you, yes, in the north area of São Paulo city we have a huge forest inside, maybe you didnt visit that time...It calls Serra da Cantareira ( near Horto Florestal about 10 kilometers from the center) , where my house it is...full of wild animals and birds, centenary huge trees . Its the highest point of the city where you can see the nearest beach ( about 60 km) down . The landscape is amazing, you should go there

Dont need to go to Rodoviária..You can take metrô North-South , go to Tucuruvi station and then take a taxi ( I recommend taxi, better than bus) ...so near there ! it s about 15 minutes to Horto and you can climb ( just on sundays) the mountain of Serra da Cantareira ! It s a wonderful view ! You can see the whole city
Jraaguá is in Serra da cantareira also, but in the other region - west I guess. It s not too much safe there. Better to go to Horto Florestal, and then you can climb inside the forest in a safe way on sundays they open .

I never heard that you could see the ocean from the Cantareira Mountains or even from the Jaraguá Peak, the summit of the range. They are in the far *north* of São Paulo city (the sea is to the south), more than 70 km (43 miles) from the nearest beach, and with parallax problems as well, due to the broad high plateau where the city is located and the Serra do Mar escarpment, which obstruct the view. The only places within the São Paulo municipality from where you can see the ocean are a few very remote and almost inaccessible lookouts in the far *south* (the rural Marsilac area on top of Serra do Mar), from where you can see the beaches of Itanhaém below. You have to trek at least a couple of hours from the nearest road to get there, and take a local guide or you'll be lost in the Atlantic forest.
There are also some lookouts near the village of Paranapiacaba (which belongs to the nearby city of Santo André and whose name means exactly "place from where you can see the ocean" in the Tupi Amerindian language), but likewise, you have to walk a lot through tiresome trails from the village to get there.

"Adeus" is not just formal, it's also very strong and definitive. It means you don't expect to see the other person ever again. It's more like "farewell" than "goodbye".

Places to go: the old downtown (usually they have a guide speaking English and explaining the things on Saturday)
Catedral da Sé.
MIS (image and sound museum)
MAM (morden art museum)
MASP (sure)
And on sundays they close Paulista avenue, so it's good.
Bairro da Liberdade (it's a neighbourhood of japanese immigrants and it is amazing)
Terraço Itália ( an expensive restaurant but the view is breathless)
And NEVER stop on the left of stairs of subway. People will get mad with it.

I'm from são Paulo, the video is completely accurate. Yes, we have a lot of crimes in Brazil, our health infrastructure isn't the best one, but Brazil is still a awesome place to visit or even live, Don't listen to media or even Brazilians telling this is the worst country in the world.

Unfortunately, that kind of warning is completely necessary! First, it's true that you have to watch yourself in Brazil. Second, a lot of people around the world just don't have to worry about things that a native knows since childhood, things like, don't hang your wallet around, don't use your cellphone walking down the street, no chains, no bracelets, no shining earings, do not stay inside your parked car, do not take too long to get into your car, don't take too long to get out of it as well, don't walk on the street after 10pm, do not walk alone at night, do not walk alone anytime if you are a woman and look like a gringo person. With all that said, there are a lot of worse places in the world. So I do recommend Brazil for visiting or even living if you don't have to work there OR if you are going to develop a work that will pay really really well.
Brazil is a very unique country, it has almost nothing to do with its neighbors, there's absolutely nothing that you can compare to Brazil. To really understand it, you have to go there. It's the world capital of diversity :)
Sao Paulo is awesome, one of the best global cities on earth. Also, Sao Paulo has the biggest japanese community outside of Japan, Brazil received a huge number of japanese immigrants, most of them are in Sao Paulo.

Rodrigo Vicoso, sou um mineiro de BH morando em São Paulo e amo a comida da minha terra, mas nós não temos o monopólio da boa comida e posso atestar que o sanduíche de mortadela do Mercadão é mesmo imperdível e um manjar dos deuses! O capricho, a espessura das fatias, o jeito de arrumar, de cortar o pão, é cheio de detalhes que fazem uma diferença enorme no final. E é IMENSO (tem quase 300 g só de mortadela, fora o pão e os opcionais!), vale por um almoço. E o Mark morou um ano no Brasil, fala português fluente e conhece muito bem a comida de todas as partes do país. E sim, ele pirou. Em outro vídeo ele já falou que o país onde ele mais gosta da comida no mundo todo é o Brasil, e aparece ele em Ouro Preto comendo feijão tropeiro com torresminho (salivei só de escrever!).

Beautful video. I'd just correct that SP isn't 4 hours away from the beach. It can be a 45 minute trip to the nearest beach, unless you're driving there on New Year's.
PS: i'd also correct that Uber unfortunately has lowered in quality immensely. The recommended and trustworthy apps are for taxi-cabs, which will charge you a bit more, but will also be a lot safer. Regular Uber here is generally ok, but most drivers are completely lost and don't know the city. Even if you have Waze on, having a driver that doesn't know the city makes if for a slow and bumpy ride, at least. The app might recommend routes that aren't safe, so that can be an issue that cab drivers know to avoid.

Just only english speakers comes here. I don't speak english very well, but I can understand enough.
That's a common thing in Brazil: we will always make an effort to communicate with foreign people in their mother language. Even though we always end up mixing english with portuguese, spanish and some signals.

WOW! I was in São Paulo a few weeks ago and it makes my heart happy to see your pictures of Mercado Municipal ... and I did have the Mortadella sandwich. I was so sad to leave São Paulo after an 8-day visit.
I'm from Sao Paulo and currently, I live in NY with my wife. How I miss my city, OMG. Good tips Mark. I usually compare my city with NYC... both are big cities and have the same kind of problems and both have the same kind of attractions also, like the food variety, good amount of cultural activities, parks, etc. OK, NYC is much better in almost everything, but in general SP and NYC are similar. The major issue in SP is the violence and as you said, we should be careful over there... but despite this, it's a great city to have fun!

The Municipal Market is good for tourists but a lot of locals don't go there. But is great. Im from the capital and SP is amazing for culture and food plus the "hidden" gems !!
Was in Sao Paulo only briefly in 2011. Was down there for my cousin's wedding on the island of Ilhabela, but arrived with a few of the wedding party a day before everyone else. (Flight was cheaper leaving a day earlier.)
While my cousin and her fiance went to the airport to gather the rest of the group the next morning, I wanted to head over to Liberdade - Sao Paulo's 'Little Tokyo' - but Luiz insisted that a family friend accompany me on the little side trip. He helped me navigate the Metro (as well as avoiding one or two tourist traps) and the language barrier, and I gave him a quick history of Japan and Japanese culture, at least from my perspective.
(I've been a fan of Japan since high school, and was pleasantly surprised when I found out how Brazil has the largest number of Japanese outside of Japan.)
Tourist traps, what are those?
I went to Sao Paulo about two months ago. The people were so nice and the food was awesome. The only struggle was that 90% of the people I met don’t speak a word of English hahah. But they tried and that’s the most important thing. I have one don’t to add and that is: Don’t go to a random Favela without locals. We visited a Favela with a group from the Netherlands. The people who invited us to go with them they already knew some people from that Favela. If you just go alone or with your partner or something, it could be very dangerous. But what an awesome city it is!!

I'm from são Paulo and you nailed it on the review! Especially the food part. If you visit são Paulo someday and not eat some feijoada, you will surely regret it afterwards.
Don't miss feijoada completa. Last time I was in Sampa (São Paulo) I took 8 people to lunch at the Hilton (I think; I may be mistaken about the hotel). Feijoada buffet, 2 rounds of drinks, and tips for the waiters -- US$55.00.
Another day, we went to lunch, and I had pinga with lunch. Don't remember what I ate, but I kinda remember the pinga.
For those who worry about crime in the big cities, I suggest Santa Catarina.

Pinga, aka cachaça; Brazil's answer to rum. In hindsight, it may have been a mistake, but it was not a big one.
Yeah, feijoada makes a great meal with farofa and couve. The chef needs skill and timing to get couve right. There seems to be a 15 second window between too tough and bitter.
All that about the food is so true. I've heard so many times that São Paulo was the culinary capital of the world. When you come here, you HAVE to try our pizza. It's incredible (in our opinion,) better than any other; even better than in other Brazilian cities.
We don't have beaches, but our parks are huge and really pretty, so that's a plus. There's lots of culture to be consumed in Theatro Municipal and smaller centres and museums, and even on certain busy streets where there are a lot of merchants and performers.
The nightlife is grand downtown; Paulista and Augusta avenues. We have the largest LGBT+ pride parade in the world. One of the best Carnaval celebrations (in my opinion.)

It's a great city...great food music and the Paulistas are very friendly and sophisticated. As much as I love Rio, eating is much better in Sao Paulo. If you want a beach, Santos is great and very close. Great video.

The Shopping Centres I enjoy the most here in town are: Shopping Iguatemi on Faria Lima Avenue, Shopping Higienópolis on Higienópolis Avenue, Shopping JK Iguatemi, Shopping Cidade Jardim and Shopping Ibirapuera. There are many others but I like these ones.

I love the Brazil series, I'm considering moving to either Buenos Aires or somewhere in Brazil (People recommend Rio) but I'm a little concerned with the safety there.

I enjoyed living in Brazil. And always love going back. There are a number of places yo ucould live and enjoy Brazil. and it doesn't have to be a mega city like Rio or Sao Paulo. But safety is an issue, but I lived there for 7 months and did not have any issue at all, but I was trained by the locals on how to fit in better so I am sure that helped. We have some videos on that on here to help out.

Successful Minds Similarly, I'm a (usually) solo traveller looking into doing something in South America for the first time. If it were just down to sights, I'd book Rio tomorrow, but Rio alone doesn't sound like a particularly wise move from a safety POV sadly. I'm currently looking into Santiago Chile instead.
Successful Minds Hi mark great video. Although I just saw a video on how most of the Olympic sites of Rio are already abandoned, disheveled and filled with trash. very sad . I think the billuons spent on the Olympics could have hekped the people more than a month of competitive games.

I was vlogging in Sao Paulo last year and the city didn't convince me at all... there is so much difference between rich and poor people that made me incredibily sad, and this last part happened also in Rio.

Just two small things. At Mercado Municipal, most of the fruits on there are not brazillian. Second, Sao Paulo is not 4 hours away from the beach. It´s just 50 minutes to Santos.

Ahahaha São Paulo is not 4 hours away from the beach. Santos is only at 60-70km (1hr with the bus that drops you at the beach actually)

1-Once I took 45minutes just to go around the block! In Sao Paulo.
2-Yes the Mercado Municipal is really great, but those salemen that offer fruits, you know they expect you buy something soo, even if you are not obligated at all to buy anything, it is a nice thing to buy something if you tried a lot of fruits. You must try the CODFISH pastel or scone and the Mortadella or gamon sandwich, those are a must.
I actually think that the municipal market is kind of a tourist trap. Everything is overpriced, and they tend to charge extra for tourists. Also, the place is overcrowded. Go there for some food, but expect to pay extra. Also, be careful with pickpockets, robbers nearby. If you want to see different food, go to other smaller markets outside the city centre. Always keep your wallet and phone in your FRONT pockets. Be careful with the guys who want to get money for watching your car. I ALWAYS pay extra to park in a real parking lot instead of on the street. The park in front of MASP is a great place to go, and quite safe as well. Use UBER or Cabify, and avoid taxis at all cost.

I think not only municipal market charge an extra, anywhere you go as a tourist (even being a brazilian and visiting somewhere in Brazil) will charge you more than you would find to be fair. I'm from São Paulo and anywhere I go (like, other states) I find myself in need to spend way more than I should in everything.
Actually São Paulo is one hour and a half from the closest beach. It is 4 hours from Rio de Janeiro, but there are beaches in the state of São Paulo much closer, like Riviera de São Lorenzo or Juquehy Beach. Even Santos and São Vincente are just over one hour drive. Aside from that great video, you really know Brasil!
Don't go in places that you don't know by yourself. Follow this simple rule and will be safe anywhere in the world.

You said Sao Paulo is the best shopping in all of South America. I know they have aot of stores and malls. But, we know all the extremely high prices for imported items. If you want to buy an imported item like electronics or shoes expect to pay 50% more in Brazil. Or even more. The bad people in Brazil aren't trying to take your $800 dollar iPhone. They are trying to take your $1,200 iPhone.
It's because the income tax is very soft to the higher classes. So what the government does? Charge taxes for almost every product, what creates an environment of regressive taxation. We are a paradise for the rich. The property taxes usually are very soft too.

as someone, whos been to sao paulo, i can second this video... Brazil in general is amazing, despite the high crime rate and the fact that pretty much no one spoke english. having a local guide was a good decision..

the mortadela sandwich is CRAP. sorry, it is a trap for tourists, expensive and impossible to eat. go to a place called CASA DA MORTADELA, also in the city center, located on avenida ipiranga x av são joão. very old, traditional, cheap and good. the place from the mercadão is in fact an imitation of CASA DA MORTADELA.

Excellent museums here in town are: MASP on Paulista Avenue, MAM Museu de Arte Moderna at Ibirapuera Park, MAC Museu de Arte Contemporânea (right in front of MAM on the other side of 23 de Maio Avenue. And visit the enormous obelisk in between these two), Museu Lasar Segall, Museu do Ipiranga (the one that tells the history of the Empire and Independence of Brazil), MIS SP Museu da Imagem e do Som and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. But ther are other ones. Oops: don't forget to pay a visit to Instituto Tomie Ohtake and Instituto Moreira Salles as well. Centro Cultural São Paulo is a "must" too!
I think South America is the most underrated continent with the landscapes and the cities. The cities are much nicer to visit than most cities in the US and they have a more rich culture and exquisite architecture.
