  • CRV B20 to B18 Head Swap
    By Aaron Gaghagen
    The RD1 CRV is a versatile vehicle. Of course, it’s a Honda! Carter’s CRV has been driving on three cylinders for the longest time. The off-roading wheels and tire made the ride even slower. Luckily for him, Carter snapped the timing belt on his worn out B20. This presents with the opportunity to get his rig running right AND to swap on a B18 head that won’t have the same valve problems that the B20s tend to suffer from. No, it still won’t have VTEC, but it will actually run on all four cylinders.

    I remember doing lots of these when I worked at the dealership. The reason this happens is not due to missing a valve adjustment even though doing a valve adjustment would prolong the issue. What we found was the valve seat was recessing into the head causing the the valve to hang open. I remember I had one recessed so bad the screw was flush with the rocker lock nut.

    I recently saved a one owner 2001 Crv from the crusher. The guy had a radiator crack and parked it for 3 years. I happened to over hear him talking to the parts guy at napa saying he was tired of messing with it. Two days later and 500$ I had it towed to my friends shop after a 60$ radiator and a 50$ tune up she was back on the road. She just crossed 270,000 miles, Craziest part is the fact the original starter and alternator are still on the car. My favorite part was going to the local Honda dealer to get all the service records. The service writer who’s been there forever sold it to the guy back in 2001 it was one of the last cars he sold before switching over to the service department, definitely a cool moment.

    A friend and I have done the integra ls head on b20 many times. We always use a b20 head gasket. Theres also been a few times where the valve seat was not damaged from a burned and chipped valve, and we just lapped another one right in. For some reason ls integra heads are resistant to burning those valves compared to b20. After years of dealing with this myself I think its due to the obd2 b20 computers leaning them out a bit too much. Also, not all LS integra heads are the same, although they all do bolt together the same. B18a does not quite flow as well as b18b1, and in 1995-96 ish they changed the casting under the valve cover just a tad.

      I've been told the B20 heads have a problem with the valve lash changing. I'm not sure how that is occurring, but that is what I've heard.

    Right at 100K, congrats & well deserved.
    This video coincidentally enough came about after I asked about thoughts on putting a B18C into a manual Awd crv I got from a buddy. Was told it needed a head gasket. I ended up sourcing a stock B20 head from someone who went B20V in his crx & I plan on putting that on the stock B20 rather than wasting a JDM B18C on a CRV. Thanks for the advice & keep up the good work!!!

    What about over heating issues. I can not idle for long without turning on the heater sometimes. Not sure if the fans need replacing or the radiator needs an upgrade. I am leaning upgrade.

    • @VTECAcademy
      @VTECAcademy  Před rokem

      Yes, the fans either work, or they don’t. You should be able to observe with her, not there, turning on and turning quickly. If not, you probably have a radiator that is not passing water through quickly enough.

    • @CaptainTexas92
      @CaptainTexas92 Před rokem

      Double check your thermostat/fan switch and clean the connectors out worst case scenario go to a local pick a part and snag some oem fans off another CRV they are pretty robust fans from factory.

      My thought is the crv b20 has more harmonic imbalance, and it basically shakes things loose more than the b18a/b. It doesn't really have anything other than that as a difference between the two because the p75 heads both engines use are identical.

    the only difference is in the cams between the b18a/b and b20 p75 head. P8r AFAIK did not come in anything over here in the US. The P8r has larger intake valves (33mm) and a larger cc size (84mm) then a p75 head (81mm)

      i think the p8r has 31mm inside valves. i just pulled one off and ran into the issue that the pistons' valve recessions did not clear 33mm valves. all non vtec heads are pretty much the same except the combustion chamber

    Hey 👋
    So I bought a 2000 Honda CRV. I got it cheap, $800. It’s AWD, 170k miles. The person I bought it off was driving it for about a year with it misfiring. Compression test cylinder (4) has zero compression. I’m leaning on the fence hoping that it only needs a Head. Just wondering how resilient you think these engines are? Think I’ll need a whole new engine or get away with a new/used Head?
