Kenny, You continually amaze me but this absolutely blew my mind! 2-1/2 hours??? It would take me 2-1/2 months! At 66, I can barely remember my last name and you remember where everything goes! Kudos to you! I found this very interesting!
This is very common now, it's by design, the cab bolts come out from underneath, disconnect all of the electrical, and plumbing and lift it up, leaving the engine and trans wide open, super easy to work on, but it's a bit of work to get to this point, probably 3 hours if you don't run into unexpected rust, or anything else, but this is very common for engine replacement, exhaust manifold replacement, timing components, (cam phasers) it's a lot of work but when it's opened up like a clam it's worth the time to do it. This is by design .

@@thomask4836 it's really cool and impresses customers walking by and stopping to see it and ask questions, some people are almost in complete shock when they see our body off, and frame drop engine and transmission installs, and you know I'd probably look at whatever professtion they do the same way, everyone has their skill set. 👍
My son is a Ford tech. When he first told me about removing cabs for major engine work/swaps, etc. I thought he was crazy. He can R&R a cab/body in less than a half day.
I've since learned that it makes it so much easier to access everything, that it shaves countless hours off the job. To test this theory, he and a co-worker simultaneously undertook the same job on nearly identical trucks- cam phasers on late model F150s. One took the traditional route, the other removed the cab. My boy was test driving his with a shit-eating grin as the other guy was grumbling and still 30 minutes from buttoning his up. A LOT less yoga is involved when you can stand inside the engine compartment, rather than lean over it and stretch for everything.

I have to pull the cab on the F150 I have . It blew out a spark plug that's under the cowl. I decided to install thread inserts on all the spark plug holes just to get it out of the way. Pulling the cab will save me the "Yoga" aggravation ..
2.5 hrs, wow, that is impressive; thanks for posting this, I'm going to use it as my guide. I just finished removing (4R100) transmission from my 2003 F150 from below (brutal). I'm also going to replace the engine, so the cab is definitely coming off for the engine removal/replacement, and trans reinstall. I only wish I would have come to my senses before tackling the transmission.
I worked as a tech for a Chrysler dealer, one of the guys there only did jobs on ram trucks (diesel) he would rip the body off any truck in less than an hour. He was an absolute beast. We were discussing me being his apprentice, because I wanted to learn from the master but sadly he passed before I passed my level 3 courses. Rip Mike.

Everyone has their own method and any method that gets the job done is a good one I changed the motor in my 97 and I researched it for months before I did it I pulled mine without removing the cab it seemed to be a lot less work like you said removing the intake is key but removing the fender liners means less time bent over the radiator support you can reach almost everything on the front, side, and top of the motor by going in the fender wells and with your cool lift means you don't have to bend over or crawl under the truck to do it like I said any method that gets the job done is a good one this one just worked for me so keep wrenching it's not a job it's a life👍👍

I ha d a 97 Ford 150. The engine started knocking, and after looking at it I just sold the truck the way it was. It had the small v6 which I did not like, and after pricing a used engine and labor to install it, I just sold it.

Worked parts at a ford dealership back in the late 90’s early 2000’s
We had a guy that only replaced engines. Rarely did he do services. But he would remove basically the whole front end. Bumpers, headlights, core support along with anything involved. He got most completed within a day.
Cool. Now I know how to take the whole thing apart now. 😁

my girlfriend's truck needs a new engine. My dad is a mechanic and mentioned it's a PITA on these F150s, but holy shit until I found this video I didn't know how bad it was. I mean you make it seem easy, but when taking the entire cab off is seen as making things easier.....damn my old man wasn't kidding!
Not sure what we're gonna do, if we'll keep the truck or get another vehicle or what. But I really appreciate the video and the insight you provided.
Why can't they just make an engine that will last?
And this is why I always try to buy easy to work on cars and trucks. I'm not fast fixing cars begin with so I try to keep it simple and I don't have a twin post to help me out
Mine is 97 built in 96 so almost 30 years old id say it lasted pretty damn well. Nearly no repairs. But now i think its about due. @brianstough5286

That seems like a lot more work than removing the intake manifold. I’ve done 4 or 5 engine replacements in 97-03 f150s with 4.6 and I’ve always removed the intake. I’ll try this on the next one, maybe it’ll surprise me. Great informative video!
I've swapped a 5.4 reman into one of these trucks. I wish I would have lifted the body off it. Very tight fit!!

I have never seen a 2 post hoist with the controls on left side.
Body removal on something that old up north here is probably a no go. I've had to fight with rusted cab mount bolts on 2012ish trucks just to change the bushings. On a plow truck, I wouldn't even try. I guess I'm surprised the guy wants to fix a truck that old with high mileage. And it only looks to be a 2wd
We tried to convince him not to fix it, but he truly loves the truck.
Fix that old truck and keep it rollin
Probably costs less in the long run to do this than take the depreciation hit to buy something else - and if you're not buying new, then you're buying someone else's unknown issues - and at least you're familiar with the vehicle and understand what issues it has. I can see some sense in that.
Wow this is interesting but not for the average guy without a lift. You can bet this is the reverse of how the assembly this truck at the factory. Only thing I'd worry about if I did it this way would be the cab mount bolts busting in half and getting stuck in the threads, then having to deal with that pain in the rear issue.

How does the steering shaft come apart?
Is there a slip joint in it so it can be slid off the gear box?
I've pulled colloms out and it was solid.
I did this to do cylinder heads...so much easier to work on with cab off. Also it beats having to pull the engine in and out just for head gaskets😢
Price for a 2002 ford f150 short bed single cab motor replacement. Tranny good and 4x4 ..but it smokes after idle at a stop for more then 10 minutes , last mechanic stated guna need a new motor . Would like to upgrade from 4.6 triton to a 5.4 , can you give me a estimate?

Seriously, I wonder how you keep everything organized so when you put it back together you have all the correct bolts in place. I’m also amazed. But very cool.
For some reason , I've always had that ability to know where the bolts need to go. Back when I was 18 , I picked up a 69 Dodge Dart 340 4speed that had the engine and transmission completely disassembled and in boxes. I was able to get everything back together and working.
The way I do it the first time I undertake something like this is take plenty of pictures just in case to help remember where and how everything goes back,put bolts,nuts small items in zip lock bags labeled where they came from,bigger items you can use boxes marked with sharpie,it sure helps me and my grey hair what little I got left,trying to figure out where everything goes back!

Maybe its just me but removing the cab to do the motor is to much work
It's an investment in time. Even more so if you work at a dealership and work on the same make all the time. The extra time spent R&R the cab pays off for the actual engine job. I have done an engine swap in a 4.6 F150 without pulling the cab. It was such a pita! Took me 2 days! Had I invested the 5 hours (estimated time for someone doing it for the first time) I could have swapped the motor in maybe 3 hours. So that would have been 8 hours total compared to the 16 I spent. Once you have done 3 or 4 of these you can have the cab off in 45 mins!

You would think car manufacturers and ( ahem ) the engineers would have designed vehicles for easy mechanical access where you could take the front end off and slide the motor with transmission forward for access and replacement , maintenace when necesary. But no those wonderful engineer designers and auto architectural paper pushers want to test the will and patience of those having to work on them 🤣💥
Especially with these - -where engines and transmissions are "high fail" parts!!!
