      Carbon might be stiffer but when you wreck a carbon bike and it cracks you are done. If you wreck an aluminum bike if it dents you can still ride it. The first gen carbon bikes were lighter but cracked all the time so they added more carbon now they weigh the same as aluminum if not more!

      I believe,and correct me if im wrong, but knolly recommends you to lock out the bike when climbing

  • @willyf1847
    @willyf1847 Před 4 lety +48

    The sluggishness you feel is, in part, a reflection of Knolly's suspension design philosophy; unlike the Specialized Enduro, which seems to have a significant amount of anti-squat baked in, Knolly is content to rely upon the climbing platform offered by the rear shock. The justification they offer is that significant anti-squat compromises traction and cannot be 'turned off', whereas a climbing platform can. What this approach achieves is, in theory, exceptional levels of grip throughout the travel, hence the reputation for Knolly's technical climbing proficiency. This is at the cost of a certain degree of sluggishness when trying to accelerate quickly or when ridden on non-technical terrain like roads or fireroads.

      My Carbon Warden was honestly the only bike to date I still think about and wish I still had. Yeah 29rs are faster, i like my carbon Troy, I liked my Evil folowing, I liked my LR SB130 decked out with Factory race team orange FOX 36 and DHX2 coil shock and was probably the "best' bike Ive owned spec wise, but I sold that thing much faster than my Knolly. Agree with Knolly's having such an amazing feel to their suspension. Also - a 275 bike done right can be the better tool (more fun) on those tighter, techier trails. Disagreed. If you're not that great, you can still benefit from less weight pedaling up hills. But if you're just doing flat trails, then yes, I'd say there's no reason for anyone to need carbon. Unless...you plan on keeping it for 10+ years and don't want an aluminum frame that can eventually rust / warp / break, whereas carbon is rust-proof and will last longer.

    • @dermax_hd
      @dermax_hd Před 4 lety +23

      @@kevinchrist824 that's Soo wrong man. Aluminum lasts for decades while carbon starts fartiguing and not being as strong after just 5 years if you ride it heavily. Same as in a crash. A small impact hit to carbon can weaken it severely which makes it super dangerous to run anymore. Fixing it is way harder as well so you almost have to get a new frame. Aluminum and steel is just more durable in the very long run. Period

    • @Willb00g

I also like not worrying about crashing and fracturing a graphite frame. I don’t worry about scratches and scrapes. To me that’s what bikes are for. To bang em up once in awhile. As such I’ve only had aluminum frames. But good graphite frames are gorgeous. Slightly lighter. Slightly more responsive. If I did race I’d most certainly break down and buy a carbon frame.

I might start a controversy here but if you can manage a decent quality full suspension bike I suggest it. So much more forgiving and plush ride than a hardtail. People will say you should start with a hardtail, that you will learn to ride better. I disagree with that. You learn to ride better by.....riding and pushing yourself.

      We gotta get comfortable being who we are and doing what we want. I’m 49 and learning to dirt jump. Almost didn’t keep going because I didn’t feel comfortable being around all the kids. Plus I’m geared up from head to toe and still working my way through the beginners line (might move up to blue line tomorrow).
      Kids don’t really give me a second look, I’m just another person taking a turn.
      Just take that carbon bike and ride the piss out of it! Good luck!

Where as everyone else it's more like, yeah Carbon is great but its more just personal preference. Thoughts?

    Even though carbon has all it's benefits, alot of people think that they need to get carbon, which isn't true. If you live in a super rocky place or crash a lot carbon could be bad because the frame might crack, when an aluminum frame wouldn't.

    • @hb7030
      @hb7030 Před 4 lety +1

      Aluminum fatigues though. So you are weakening your bike with all of those crashes. So long as you don't actually crack your carbon frame, there will be no difference in longevity or strength if you crash your carbon bike.

      @@camerondavis7291 Not true - over time, aluminum loses its strength. A 10 year old aluminum bike will be weaker than when it was brand new. Not the case for carbon. Carbon doesn't just "crack" unless it undergoes significant force.

      @@hb7030 who keeps a bike for more than a couple of years let alone 10 but I know what your getting at . I've seen so many carbon frames getting damaged from a rock strike or crack that I just dont see the point of carbon and not only that most carbon Enduro bikes weigh the same of not more than Aluminium just to make them abit more stronger.

    I was riding to the jump trail on the weekend with a shovel. Some how the handle ended up in the back wheel and bent about half my spokes. Snapped the fibreglass shovel and scratched the seat stay a bit.... my bike is an alloy remedy. I’d hate to know how that seat stay would look if it was carbon.

    Realize that I've probably come across as a 29er advocate in the comment section lately. That's not really the case, I'd love to just have the right tool for the job and sure think there is a better suited place for each category of bike.
