Now I will admit, we got the Sony WH-1000XM5’s much earlier than I expected. I wasn’t expecting these headphones for another 8 to 12 months. Now even though the 1000XM5’s block out more noise, they sound a little better, and they have better feeling leatherette… their redesigned body has brought us all the way back to square one. Nonetheless, today we’re going to checkout the 1000XM5’s…. And we’re going to see how they compare to the 1000XM4’s, 1000XM3’s, and I’m even going to lightly sprinkle in the 1000XM2’s.

I purchased my xm3's when they first came out and I can remember the initial sticker shock I experienced at first. Back when they were at full price it seemed like an awfully steep price for just a pair of wireless headphones. But, I had no idea how well they would perform and the level of jaw dropping audio quality that they would produce. Years of musical bliss has proven them to be worth every penny. Eventually I'll upgrade to the xm4's, but only after my 3's fall rotting from my grateful ears.

My friend got the xm5 recently as a gift and I kindly asked him if I could just try them on bc I’ve had my xm3’s since 2018 (and they still sound great) but he said no which ticked me off a bit to be honest but seeing how so many people still love their xm3’s too so I think I’ll save my $350 rather than buying a slightly better looking pair 😂😂

When I tested an XM5 last week (on pre-sale demo) at a local store, I'm glad I'm not the only one who found the ear cups to be shallower. My ears touched the back of the cups and was very uncomfortable, even only after two minutes of wearing.
I will definitely be sticking with my XM4 that are far easier to travel as they can fold. It's too bad that Sony felt the need to rush a product to market in an attempt to address the Bose 700, but in doing so, sacrificed comfort and practicality in the name of keeping up appearances with the other brands.

REALLY awesome review - probably the best and most realistic/truthful review that I’ve watched on the XM5’s. Thank you 😊
I have the XM3s and LOVE them bar 3 things - 1 - lack of multipoint connection which wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for point 2 - and when I turn the XM3s on, I never know which device they’re going to connect to (They’re paired with my phone, iPad and work computer and auto connect when I turn them on and I have to track down device and disconnect from it to connect the device I want to connect to), and 3 - the microphone and surrounding sounds it picks up when on work calls.
I love the sound on the XM3s, the ANC, transparency mode and the comfort/feel/fit of the XM3s - I can wear them for hours on end without issues/discomfort.
While I know the XM4’s fix some of these things, not sure if it’s worth the spend to upgrade. Initially I was thinking of upgrading to the XM5’s, but after watching your review, I don’t think they’re a value upgrade as they seem to take a couple of steps back from the ones I’m currently using

a little tip for you on your 11 month comment, on point #2, i figured out i can just power on the unit and continue holding to get into pairing mode, then on my intended device i manually connect to bluetooth. thus saving a step of tracking down where it connected it. similarly if i want to connect to my phone, i use the nfc instant connect feature skipping the pairing + connecting step.
but yes, same for me, i came here looking to see if the xm5 was worth the upgrade but with his testing and explanations i will probably hold on to these longer

Excellent review. You pretty touched on every single subject about these headphones that I was wondering about. My heavily worn XM3's probably soon need to be semi-retired and relegated to the only be used in the sweaty gym. The problem I had with them were that I was never crazy about the bloated bass (compared with XM1), and the slightly creaky and non-sturdy plastic design which seems almost identical on the XM4's. My XM3's would simply eventually crack at the base of the speaker-arm (looks like a compartment on the inside of the arm, right above the speakers) when putting them on/off, and I had to glue them on again + reinforce with gaffers tape. I was hoping for a more sturdy construction.

They have better drivers. 40mm is a must for ANC since a lot of the noise floor is being used to cancel noise which means bigger drivers have an easier time removing those droning bass notes. This means that the new Sonys either have to have less bass or weaker ANC, or they will distort more easily and have a Doppler effect.

Now having a Samsung with Exynos (LDAC>SC>APTX(no HD)>SBC>AAC(samsung implementation)) the logical conclusion would be to get a pair that support the former codec, but there’s no many of them on the market. I didn't hear any difference in ANC during the testing, but my personal experience with the XM4 is that it is great at blocking out noise. Often when I have migraines I will wear them, even without listening to anything, as the passive noise isolation is enough to dampen low noises. Again, that is just my experience. I haven't tried any other headphones from the XM series, but the XM4 is a pretty good product and I would definitely recommend checking out local stores for deals on this pair.

He did compare the ANC performance of all three (XM3, XM4 and XM5) in side-by-side comparisons. You can't see the hidden microphones he placed inside the earcups when testing. All three were tested with 'road' and 'busy cafe' background noises and the results are quite evident. You should wear headphones when listening to that comparison segment of this video because the ANC is quite good at reducing the noise level, and listening through speakers doesn't do the comparison justice.

If you review these in isolation, these are gobsmacking, blow your brains out all over the floor headphones. Compared to the XM4's, I'd say they're about 10% better in almost every way execpt for the carry case size and if you're sensitive to cabin pressure. There's not enough to warrant an upgrade from the top of the category, but if you don't have any headphones, these are a fantastic one stop shop.

It’s very subjective, but I’ve owned the XM3s for a few years and have listened extensively to the XM4s and XM5. My XM3s were damaged and I was considering an upgrade. Ultimately, I just bought another pair of XM3s, purely based on their wonderful sound and comfort.
The XM4s are the worst sounding of the three, imo. If you’re considering upgrading to them from XM3: don’t! It’s a downgrade in sound.
The XM5s have a relatively clinical, flat profile which sounds excellent and arguably the closest replication of the original mix, but I use different, wired cans for serving that purpose.
For travelling/pleasure, I want that wonderful ‘commercial’ sound profile that the XM3s do better than both their successors: 5db bass push (it’s a real kick), nice scooping out around, 2K and some air up above, all of which make them the warmest, most exciting and pleasurable sounding of the three sets of cans. This is, I think, what most people desire when they’re not specifically working with music//sound.
I do also get a bit of unattractive honk around 2K on the XM5s, but that might just be my ears.
The XM5s are also comfortable, but I’ve never had discomfort wearing the XM3s.
Furthermore, I don’t think the NC is significantly better to justify all the extra money.
    Just my tuppenceworth.

Finally someone covers the downgrades. The full bass was essential to this line and these smaller drivers just take away the signature feel of the bass. They don’t knock. I seriously don’t understand all these downgrades for the sake of looking modern. Same thing is happening with earbuds. The AirPods Pro have smaller drivers than the regular ones. And Sonys earbuds sound tinny and thin. The resonant frequency of the WFs hurts my ears and cause permanent hearing damage to the treble receptors in your ears. The X3 earbuds were horrible. The treble was boosted by 10 full decibels at 10 and 15 kHz. This is dangerous especially since they have no ports. Tiny drivers being amplified to sound loud have to move more air and the air gets trapped in your ear which makes the eardrum vibrate. This has been proven to be the reason why earbuds cause more damage than headphones. I stick with the jabra 85ts. They have 12 mm drivers and an airport.
