If Segovia (whom I love) were alive he would have had to eat his heart out. This interpretation of Julia Florida is the best ever. You are the master now.
It is so wonderful to see that your creativity is not darkened by Segovia's shadow. While his ego prevented him from appreciating the spontaneity and ingenuity in your playing, they are not lost on those of us who listen freely. Having suffered a similar humiliation at the hands of Parkening many years ago, I take inspiration from your playing and I hope you will continue to share your gift on CZcams for all to enjoy.
+Christopher Rude I watched those clips of Michael"s with Segovia>>> Segovia, God bless him, was a little grumpy and frumpy.. perhaps even jealous... Michael's playing was fabulous, and everybody knows it... i had a teacher for a short while... he scolded me because i had learnt a few pieces entirely by ear.....haha...( I do read ) Even the Grand Masters don't know it all....
I genuinely feel that this is the best version on youtube or anywhere that I have watched so far! Such incredible feel, you have your soul on your fingers. God bless!!
I have to perform this beautiful piece in a month for a school recital, and I've been struggling a lot, because it is difficult and also very hard to express. I must say, watching at you owning this piece gave me that confidence I was missing. I love your interpretation of it; it really does feel like I'm on a boat, facing against the waves of the ocean, just amazing. thank you sir, truly.
and in endorsing everybody else's comments, Michael, I would like to add that the sound quality of all your posts, is always absolutely outstanding. Well done! (Absolutely love your "Mysterious Barricades").
Love the intonation, frasing of your playing. Since some time I discovered that I have to search the silence in the music and then play from there. Seems to me you mastered that element of music. And of course, this piece is perfect for this. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for such a thoughtful interpretation. Barrios was a true genius of composition! the beauty of the melody is soo on par with that of Ennio Morricone,; in its simplicity and depth.
Simply beautiful Michael, thank you. You make the working day easier to take and inspire me to practice in the evening! The guitar has a wonderful tone too.
So beautifully played . I don’t mean to be an expert but your tempo really makes the melody being sung with so much meaning - many just rush through like an exercise - whereas you make the guitar sing that tune !!
Thanks for sharing these great pieces of music! There is a kind of barrier that stands in the way of attempting to appreciate such music in that there is so much of it and for this that know little about it that barrier can be daunting. Your videos have made it much easier to appreciate this kind of music and are very educational and just plain great!
Great Performance, Mr. C.!;-) Fun fact about listening with our eyes - the depth of the guitar's tone makes me think and perceive the guitar's body as deeper than usual;-).
Hi Michael !! Thank you for sharing !! I love guitar music !! Playing very much! Thank you for the experience! I took her to my favorites! Very nice day and wish you a nice weekend :) much love to macika
I really love this video Michael. The guitar has a wonderful tone and this piece by Mangore is fantastic. I listen to your CD of Bach quite often. I know it is difficult to make any money cutting CD's, but I would love to see/hear you do a CD of your favorite Agustin Barrios Mangore compositions.
Yes, a CD of your playing Augustin Barrios Mangoré works will be much appreciated. And you could choose to play them on classical guitars or steel-string flat tops.
His rubato and also ritardandos are so even and natural. Changes in tone and timbre excellent. The open string sounds are very pure; he lets the notes resonate~ the minore sections are lovely and transitions between the sections of the piece flow really well. This is a beautiful piece and performance. Soothing and a bit melancholy too. He brings out the other voices so clearly sounding like other instruments playing, much like very skillful pianists would do. Wonderful musical imagination. Thanks for this!
Interesting and original use of staccato in the bass accompaniment throughout the piece. Sometimes this works extremely well, such as the transition around 2:25. At times I think an emphasis on the accompaniment runs the risk of distracting from the melody though. At 1:22-1:30, when I train my ear on the melody, the beautiful descending sequence, it gets a bit lost in the assertive playing of the accompaniment. Just my two cents, for what it's worth. Great performance!
felicitaciones, amigo, es la mejor version que he escuchado de "Julia Florida". Me hiciste cerrar los ojos y fruncir el ceño en toda tu interpretacion, de verdad estoy admirado.
Barrios wrote this piece called "Julia Florida". So, who was Julia Florida? A girlfriend perhaps? Very dreamy. Love this classic piece. Thanks for posting and providing the score...Steve
My apologies Michael, I found the answer, but decided to keep the post as I answer my own question. Agustin Barrios Mangore dedicated this piece to Julia Martinez de Rodriguez. She was one of Barrios' guitar students, and was also the neice of Francisco Salazar, a good friend of Barrios. The piece was written in Costa Rica in 1938.
Julia was a student of Barrios and the daughter of a friend. When she changed from a child to a woman, she grew both tall and beautiful ("florida" = blossomed, flourished). Barrios fell in love with her (enticingly, we know no more), and wrote this beautiful piece for her.
Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful. If I could play it as well as you do, Michael, I would have no shortage of lovers. I bet you don't...have a shortage of lovers, that is. Hey, man, could you show us your right-hand fingernails, please? It'll be great to see how you shape them. What a gift, Michael, to be able to play like that.
About the nails: he also plays steelstring with them. Tried this for years but couldn't go without AC-glue. Luckily, now since I'm retired, I'm only playing on nylon strings: what a relief. But still indeed interested in how he makes this combination.

The most beautiful version ever from a beautiful soul, god bless your hands Michael 🙌🙏
Espiritual y profunda, casi digo "mística"... girando en espiral... ¡Gracias!
I have cried, and cried, and cried... to this masterful rendition of this so beautiful song.
This man will make water pour from a stone.
Thank you.
I love this review!

This is a truly beautiful performance of one of Barrios' finest compositions. Thank you for posting this.
Far the best interpretation I heard! The use of rubato is beautiful, without loosing the 'Barcarolle'-feeling. Thank you.
and in endorsing everybody else's comments, Michael, I would like to add that the sound quality of all your posts, is always absolutely outstanding. Well done! (Absolutely love your "Mysterious Barricades").
+Ian Grant Thanks Ian!
After deep search, your are the best interpreter for this marvellous piece. Thanks many times !

That guitar is an extension of your soul.
Maybe the most lyric version of this wonderful piece. Together with Berta Rojas performing. Unmatchable rubato trademark.

Wow
Michael, incredible playing and gorgeous tone. Does that guitar have a carbon tornavoz ?
Thanks Steve: Yes, carbon tournavoz.
I'm jalous of the variety of guitars you have. :D
but you deserve it. great playing!
Nice, nice -- sounds better than what I've got going on (but I'm just at the early read through stages :) ) Hope I can sound just as good :)
Великолепно!!!
Tudo belo, brilhante instrumentista, viva a guitarra!

this is amazing !! AND it reminds me of animal crossing ... idk
BUT its so unbelivable amazing !
Very nice! I'm trying to figure out how your guitar is being supported. Can you tell me?
thanks Jason: It's not supported. Just a piece of rubber on my right thigh. Not easy but comfortable.
+Michael Chapdelaine wow, it is really hard to play only on your right thigh, but you play beautifully.
+Ricky Adibrata I have found that the right thigh is actually most comfortable for most pieces...
Excellent. Great on vinyl record and play back through tube amp.
what is the it called?
Dross eres tu?
jajaja si se parece un chingo
Mierda llegue tarde
