I love that Steve plays on both Thurston and lee's bands. Cool AS SHIT
they got joint custody
Yeah. Just like Ringo with the former Beatles...
really amazing! and he is like everyones chemistry teacher!
fucking legend
Steve shelley is a good drummer. He has a different approach. He isn't a show off but sounds amazing. And Lee is one heck of an a very talented original guitarist.
It's still amazing to me how each and every core member of Sonic Youth had a voice they'd bring to the table. Lee clearly had the melodic chops and the pop sensibility. Thurston brought the spastic punk energy. Kim brought the off-kilter tendencies to life with her all-consuming presence, and only Steve could hold the entire band down. Goddamn if there was ever a perfect band.
Thurston and Lee are such a sweet ass combo, but this really shows the difference between the two guitarists.
Both are genius
and Steve is a fucking champion and im glad to see him playing with lee
+turd furgeson Cool to see him performing with both, in fact.
+turd furgeson Steve sometimes plays in Thurston's band as well. :)
STEVE IS A FUCKIN' CHAMPION!
Lee and Lou Barlow ought to collaborate.
Yeah, that'd be so cool.
Well they kinda did on Dinasaur jr song your living all over me, but that would be cool if they did a whole album.
I clicked the like button as soon as Lee mentioned Steve Shelly on drums :-)

Off The Wall 6:10
Rock and Roll 26:21
The Rising Tide 33:16
Lee never lost his dynamics and I think he writes better stuff than thurston, back in sonic youth he was always overshadowed and not given the right exposure
Oh for sure, but Thurston's newer stuff is insane, the album was kinda okay, but live they just go for it and it sounds honestly better than most Sonic Youth stuff, Lee's more musical that Thurston I think, structure wise, his songs are way more solid.
I thought Chelsea Light Moving was kinda killa doe!
totally agree with you Ivan Kmeto
I always looked on him as the George Harrison of the band, a bit overshadowed by the power duo in front but always delivering interesting and thoughtful music.
this makes me sad, but I will always have more respect for lee, after Thurston cheated on Kim, (though there are no doubts he's an extremely talented musician)
It's wonderful hearing Lee speak. So many of the SY interviews were fronted by Thurston and Kim. Nothin against SY obviously, it's just nice hearing Lee tell insane stories like the one with him in northeast India. That's something else..
Love this. I have always been a total Sonic Youth fan, but oddly enough I only discovered Ranaldo's post SY work very recently. There's something about Lee Ranaldo's voice, guitar playing and his songs that I just immediately relate to. There's a warmth and humanity in his music even when he's producing the most f- ed up noise. I love Kim and I love Thurston and I love Steve but my favorite Beatle is Lee.
I like that Lee has discovered the joys of acoustic guitar woods and tones. I kinda relate to that: I have always enjoyed making a lot of noise with my electrics, but have recently rediscovered the soothing, nuanced tones of cheap acoustics. Must be getting old. :-)
Kevin Moore even in sonic youth, i feel like he was the most melodic and added the most musical elements to their songs. overall i love the feel these songs have still even though i do love the noise and chaos of SY
Dunno why but i always wanted to see Lee and Kevin Shields working on something together.
I allways loved Lee's voice. Too bad he didnt sing many songs in SY.
i'm so glad steve is in this band and still growing musically with lee and co! just incredibly cool. key/hole and the rising tide are tight!!
Este es un verdadero regalo para quienes consideramos a Lee una influencia grandiosa y generosa para el futuro...Steve Shelley tambien es un gran maestro
Lee has always been my favorite Sonic Youth member. He has such a great knack for writing great noisy pop songs. This stuff really has a Dinosaur/Buffalo Tom vibe.
I love the noisey sections. They fit so beautifully against the wonderful song arrangements.
This takes me back to 1981, when I heard 'Ceremony' and knew Joy Division were not dead
i get that
Great music, perfect drumming.
Lee is great at coaxing sounds from his guitar! His writing is awesome too- great band!
Lee Ranaldo sometimes remember Robert De Niro
+grilogom *resembles
+BeyondSideshow I'm sure Lee Ranaldo rembers De Niro too
+yazu karuku Renaldo Remembers: Robert De Niro
De Niro Skate Rules
that's cause they're tribeca neighbors
Steve Shelley!
Remember 2 dollar guitar?
Love the elements from Lee's Sonic Youth Days carrying over, with the new sound that he's found with this band. good stuff.
Amazing!! Love to see how Lee’s music has changed and evolved over the years. The noise is pulled off perfectly!
I love Lee. That's one of the best covers of Rock & Roll I've heard, it's probably better than the original.
Had the chance to be Steve's roadie when he played here in Belo Horizonte with Riviera Gas this year. What a human being!
This music is so mesmerizing
I really enjoyed Alan Licht 's (sp?) playing here. It's the first I've heard of him; and the 2 guitars really compliment each other very well. Beautiful guitar he's playing as well, both in aesthetically and tonally. Great set of tunes, I'll have to get their cd to enjoy more of their playing.
+Glenn Michael Thompson 26:30
It's great to see Lee's band and Thurston's band and Kim's band and how the whole of Sonic Youth dissects. All of it is really great. And Steve is obviously the perfect drummer for it all. So glad they keep giving us such great music. It will be a sad day when they stop. Thank you!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this. First time listening to Lee and the Dust.
i loved Sonic Youth, as a rock kid, they were always experimental, and to me Lee is a great guitarist, and I mean great. This is the first time I've heard this, so forgive me this, but I am just thinking of the post SY ballad-esque Lee, comes across like an REM inflected Sonic Youth. That wonderful garage sounding 'let rip' section, proceeded by sweet chords. I love the last song
macabre2007 totally agree on that one dude
macabre2007 good call.I always loved the songs Lee sang on in Sonic Youth the best as well.
Steve Shelley is my favourite drummer and has been since the early 90's. I didn't even know this was a thing, but I am glad it is. Love Lee too.
an insane set
Great to hear your experience all over India! Congratulations, keep it up!
I love that no matter how many time has passed on, his style evolve and mature, but still his own style
Awesome, just found this. Didn't know they recorded this right before the Barbosa show. Me and a couple friends were there. He broke that bow midshow :P
OMG, Thank you KEXP!
I have been waiting for this since October, Lee said they were at KEXP and then nothing happened for months!
Yes, yes, yes, so worth the wait.
wonderful to watch/hear...and wonderful to see tim luntzel
awesome stuff !! Lee is such a cool guy and he can get the most amazing sounds out of a guitar !!
lee is so great
The noise is very sonic nurse.
38:06 more like sister
a clear and clean sound
Lee Renaldo is great. Does anyone else think that Steve Shelley looks increasingly similar to Paul Merton, the british comedian, or is it just me? ✌️
can't wait to see them live in a few days!
The songs are so great
amazing I love this so much
Happy Birthdate Lee!
line sim / lee ! very very thanks !!! 🎸
great stuff. Really good.
thank you KEXP !!! YOU OTIMOS !
One word : great !
This is so excellent, and for those who don't know Alan Licht, look him up. His solo records and other projects are great.
I love him!
I didn't know that Robert De Niro was in a band.
Key-hole and Off The Wall é muito cool !
4:47 that bassfill
This was awesome!
I love this guy
Wow! This is it!!! Great
good taste indi!!!!!
steve !! siempre fiel y genio!!
so good
Superb!
All great players !
Phenomenal
does anyone think that lee's voice kind of sounds like michael stipe's?
+Aaron Connor Facer Yes! First time I listened to a SY album was in 98, Thousand Leaves, and on "Karen Koltrane" I thought it was Michael Stipe singing...
no
first person i thought of for sure
Keyhole sounds like something from new adventures in hi fi (rem album)
Nope.
I've seen this line up twice now - 2012 in Melbourne at the Hi Fi Bar and January 2014 in Brooklyn. I just love the band and of course lee ranaldo and steve shelly from sonic youth but Tim Lüntzel on bass!!!! he is just so incredibly fantastically wonderfully fluid as a bass player - i love mike watt's bass playing (in all his different projects) for obviously different reasons but i reckon watt and luntzel would have to be 2 of my absolutely favourite bass players…ever! rock music is NOT a competition but there is something about luntzel's playing that encourages me to post this rant :-)
Lee is Free!
The Lou Reed cover sounds great. Things die and decompose, then new stuff crops up. Nice one, Lee.
This is like an amazing combo of Dinosaur Jr and R.E.M.
THE NOISE IS FAMILY
Great stuff
Long interview but he's an interesting man
Is it weird that I kind of like this more than Sonic Youth?
Nope, not at all.
well, in fact, me too...
Same here, I think. He has matured as a musician and an artist. I feel the same about Thurston Moore.
Because you don't understand anything of the music of Kim and Thurston. lmao, I seen it in live, but I prefer Thurston Moore.
Maybe because he likes The Beatles, Neil Young, so his music is maybe less indie that the one played by Sonic Youth. His last record "Between The Times & The Tides" is fantastic...I have been listening to it for the last two years and I am still amazed about it..
SY should have put solo records out at the same time; like KISS did!
Steve Shelly plays on Lee's solo work and Thurston's. The solo work is euphoric by both artist but it is Sonic with out Kim.
Damn that Lou reed cover. From a classic album
love sy of course but lee ranaldo is a major reason why.. his style is so trippy yet stable.. you dont see the love for music from many artist like you do the sy crew and obviously surrounders.. not many other bands will solo with other bands and still come back and play as a band. you dig?
Muito cool !!!!!!!!!!!
Lee Ranaldo .....and the ..... (looks at notes)..... the Dust
Wow that last song.
KEXP must have a jazzmaster fetish
so far ive seen
Nels Cline, THurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Dinosaur JR. on their show. is it a coincidence that all of them are jazzmaster guys?
i think they're just an indie/alternative rock thing
Nels got a Jazz bc T/L had em, who had grown to love them along with J
rock and roll!!
Beats watching fat docs. I've actually met Lee Renaldo and gave him my poetry book. he was very nice.
today evening live in Padova, Sala dei Giganti - piazza Capitaniato, at 20:30 o'clock!
very kexp !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hermoso
Que som!!!
puralocura
❤
The main difference between Renaldo's voice and Michael Stipe's voice is that I want to hear Lee's voice.
Why they didn't play this song "Lecce, Leaving"
It's a beautiful song on the album :(
mt bom!
I hope Sonic Youth never get back together, you'd never get songs as good as this from a band overshadowed by Thurston's ego lol
What a brilliant ego it is though.
@@cactaceous no
atarirob yes
The second guitarist has a tinge of mascis about him from time to time
nice
Sonic soul
Lee is the best Sonic Youth's guy. No doubt. Your solo career is better than Kim e Thourston projects.
i'd say Kim was more of an Artist than Musician, I also think Kim should have her own reality show.
epic
Great tunes. Love cycling to this, and guess what? Lee is an avid cyclist. No wonder he keeps his youthfulness thriving, although he's gotten greyish, just like me. Hahah ;) Great drumming by Steven Jay Shelley BTW ~
nice sound be like the beach at summer left the car in the garage
hey KEXP any chance of getting a playlist of just the full performances?
