- Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy turns 20 this year. An interview with Naughty Dog’s co-founders Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin was made by Gamesradar. In this interview, key members including Bob Rafei, former art director, and animator Eric Iwasaki, discuss working on The Precursor Legacy 20 years ago.
Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy was released exclusively on the PlayStation 2 on December 3rd 2001. Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin look back at the IP they produced two decades ago. Jak TPL was certainly a game which helped shape Naughty Dog into what it is today. Working on Jak & Daxter 20 years ago had quite a few challenges of its own.

Oh man the rememberers, my childhood game I’ve grown up on is 20 years old 😔 the rememberers wish there was a remake planned
I remember Christmas at my grandmother's house when I was a kid and I opened a box that had the game and the strategy guide (which I called instructions) then spent the next few minutes reading the guide rather then opening up my next present.
Jak and Daxter sure did make quite a legacy in their own right

This is still a series that I truly cherish to this day! I even replayed all 4 games on PS4 via ps2 classics just recently too. Really hope it makes a comeback on ps5 or even a tv series similar to how sly cooper is hopefully getting?
20 years is such a milestone. Who knows, maybe we could get some kind of remaster.
TPL only released 3 years after Disney’s Mulan in 1998. The idea of inspiring daxter from mushu definitely makes the most sense.

They made strides in game development I dont think anyone has matched since. Games without load times still barely exist, I honestly dont know of others.
Why was my favorite childhood video games series the one that got left behind? I loved the Jak and Daxter series. I will scream with joy at the top of my lungs if we ever see a new entry, but I kind of doubt it will happen at this point.

Look at the love Insomniac kept going for Ratchet&Clank. Or what Senzaru gave Sly Cooper's 4th instalment. But Nothing has been done for Jak & Daxter, very sad.
Depends on the Devs.
A lot of them do love their franchises, some even continue on, but then there are some, that come to the point where they can't find anymore inspiration to continue on series, thus choosing to move on from the series and start anew.
Insomniac Games is a good example, like you said, look at their love for Ratchet & Clank, because in every game they made, they were always able to bring a fresh take in the series, always improving.
Senzaru is a good example as well, a lot of love did went into making Sly 4 and they did great.
But there really are game Devs that hang up a series after they feel like, they're finish or they ran out of ideas.

In Naughty Dog's case, they stated that Jak and Daxter games are too immature, and they are moving to make more mature games
So the question is: Which developer loves the series enough, and is talented and brave enough, to take on another Jak and Daxter?

OMG that is that one thing I never noticed about the first jak and Daxter game! No load times!! 2 and 3 sort of slumped a bit in that area am I right though? Lol
There are still no traditional loading screens in 2 or 3, but the loads are less well hidden. You might be stuck in an elevator or "airlock" type thing for a few seconds.

I loved the precursor legacy. Been my favorite game when I use to play the PS2. I played it everyday after school and make my own stories with it. I'm so amazed to see that it's now 20 years old, and I was thinking of playing it again on my PS4 to celebrate. This game was alot better than the Jak sequels. Cause of it's beautiful worlds and fun loving characters. It was a really nice game.
I just recently got the first jak game. Now finally I got every game, including final frontier on ps2 and daxter on psp.

Wow! I remember getting this game when the PS2 first came out. It came with the game and that's how I discovered Jak and Daxter. I'm glad I did. What a game. I remember seeing the intro of the commercials of Jak 2 and 3. Even Jak X. A real fan wouldn't count lost frontier or whatever? What's that again? That wasn't a real Jak and Daxter I knew and love. Good times. I would played for hours. I'll be 30 and this really made me feel super old.

20th Anniversary of Jak and Daxter (2001-2021)
Naughty Dog made the Jak series perfect. I appreciated all of their contributions the most, and it's unfortunate to see that these days, there's almost nobody who worked on this series and is still employed at Naughty Dog. They stayed strong enough to continue their work in this industry since the release of Math Jam in 1985. Naughty Dog has certainly built a strong legacy for their company. It's too bad that Sony didn't keep on expanding the legacy of the Jak and Daxter IP. It's been almost twenty years since the release of the first game, and that's great, but it's also been about twelve years since the release of the latest game, and it was developed by a company other than Naughty Dog (which was busy with Uncharted back then). Jak needs a quick revival. I don't know if Naughty Dog will be selected to make Jak 4, and if they are, it would be cool to see the Jak game with realistic graphics that they planned long ago. However, with most of the Jak developers gone from Naughty Dog, I don't know how that would turn out.
Hope you realize that Sony gives their studios complete creative freedom when making games meaning Naughty Dog chose to move on from Jak & Daxter to expand into other series not Sony that told them to do so

Jokes aside I've always loved how Jak 1 never introduced stuff with some cutscene, you're running from another place to another, no loading scenes, the area just loads when you're walking somewhere you can't see it, nowadays EVERYTHING's just cutscenes, new enemies coming trough a door? Slap a 20 second cutscene. (Oh god I just remembered how that one door from Size Matters would legit just possibly get you killed because you somehow aren't immune during the cutscene where the door opens)
I just beat that one again for like the tenth time last week.

I really hope they make a Jak 4 one day. Idk I'm getting a bit of a hunch that they will, they just did the whole remake of Crash Bandicoot series,CTR, and a new game in Crash 4. Other remakes like Rachet and Clank or Shadow of the Colossus did really well too. Jak seems like their only franchise without 4 and I think they notice that. Plus after watching your vids and the DVD there are ALOT of unanswered questions not just about Mar either
You know it truly is interesting the way they say that if you didn’t like Daxter it didn’t matter, because jak was the one you were playing as. But personally that is a true understatement I think! Daxter is far from unlikable! I love the little guy, with his silly one liners and enjoyable demeanour. I just wish he didn’t have to start wearing pants at the end of the third game. He looks so weird with them on. You get what I’m saying right Vivi?

20 years later it's still easily the best one in the series. The second was frustratingly difficult, the third had too much driving and minigames, not enough platforming.

There are two kinds of Jak and Daxter. The Original and the Sequels. If a new game got made, which path would they follow?
@@leeviheiskanen1271 Highly unlikely. Toys for Bob is owned by Activision, so they're not going to be doing any Sony IPs (like Jak and Daxter). Plus, they're probably too busy with new games for Crash Bandicoot and/or Spyro the Dragon.
It’s hard to believe that first jak and Daxter game released back in 2001, the same year as the ps2 console’s launch. But wasn’t a launch title for the system right?
The PS2 was released in 2000 so Jak 1 wasnt a launch title.

5:03 This “fact” has been very misconstrued over the years. It wasn’t just “Here’s our engine! You’re welcome!”. It was actually really hard to develop for that engine (only one person at Naughty Dog could understand it.) So Insomniac completely reworked it to make it better and easier, essentially making a new engine, and gave it back to Naughty Dog. There was then a lot of back and forth between the two companies constantly improving it. From what I’ve heard, Insomniac has to keep correcting this story whenever someone asks them about it on their streams.

If Jak gets a new title, I don't mind if Naughty Dog makes it but I hope they would get external help when it comes to storyboarding and writing.
Don't get me wrong, I think Druckmann is an amazing storyteller and writer but his style doesn't fit the J&D universe. Just my opinion.
Daxter was inspired by Mushu? I thought they were thinking of Apu when they came up with him.
The personality of a wise-cracking sidekick came from Mushu. The animated movement of Daxter climbing over Jak came from Apu.

I know Crash Bandicoot is better off with Activision, but if Crash was still owned by Naughty Dog, imagine a Crash Bandicoot X Jak and Daxter crossover...
I personally think Jak and daxter 3 is the best jak and daxter game with jak and daxter 1 is the second best jak and daxter game i also think josh keaton who not only voiced spiderman and ocliot bbut also jak is a better jak actor but that does not mean i pefer the more recent non remaster jak and daxter game the lost fronteir😢
