Going to start doing a “How To” series of some jobs we come across a lot in Plumbing.
Just seeing how this one goes but they will be interim videos between the main Wednesday and Sunday Video…

Had a plumber quote us £300 to fit a couple of taps, a shower screen and replace a radiator with a towel rail. That's 3 days' wage for me, and watching videos like this made me realise I went down the wrong career path. As many have said it's the real life plumbing including mistakes, showing the things that can go wrong and fitting taps lying on your back under the sink (!!) that I like about your channel. The idea of "How to" videos is fair enough but there are hundreds of them available on CZcams and I'm not sure whether the work involved for you would enhance your viewing figures - what I perk up for is when I here you say "here's a little trick of the trade", the more of them the better for me.

Great concise vid, cheers. A couple of tips you could use.. I mark crosses on the wall or tiles so it's easy to check the drill doesn't drift - useful to keep everything spot on when you have a row of fixings to line up.. good to drill the tile 1mm bigger than the wall hole to avoid cracks when putting the screws in (and a spot of silicone in the holes first!).

    • @peternewman9214
      @peternewman9214 Před 9 měsíci

@drikareis1770 Use a 1mm bigger drill bit for the tile, then change to a smaller one to drill into the wall behind. So, for a 7mm wall plug, use 8mm tile bit first, then 7mm masonry bit - make sure you only widen the hole in the tile and don't go too deep.

To all those people who are commenting that there is water leaking by the screen hinge, ensure the bath has been fitted level. Even a couple of mm incline can cause this to happen. Even incline the bath a couple of mm towards the back wall. I've just had a huge issue with incompetent plumbers. I discovered the issue simply by using a spirit level, they didn’t use one. They suggested putting up a shower curtain to solve the problem. I'm hundreds of pounds out of pocket too.

What drill set did you use to drill into the shower screen? Had the exact one fitted 2 months ago and the top of the screen is lying forward out of the frame.

Great idea for a series! Some of the issues i find are not covered for the amateur beginner is how to deal with actually getting the water off properly and what to do when it will not shut off. I.e turning an isolation valve off and then turning it back on again and it leakes from the isolation valve and will not stop dripping. What do you do there? Also when draining down to change a radiator and the drain off valve washer sticks in and/or will not reseal when trying to fill it back up again. For me the worry is what to do when the water will not stop and you dont know where to or how to stop it properly. So....changing a kitchen tap which has isolation valves on you turn them off fine, change the tap go to turn valves on and they both leak and will not stop....whats the next step, change the isolation valves but how when water will not turn off at tank/boiler etc. Yes i realise simple jobs for professionals like yourself but scary for the amateur and no idea how to address the problem. Hope this makes sense and thank you for the great videos really appreciated.

Thanks mate perfect vid 👍 I now know what’s what because I had a cowboy plumber wreck my bathroom a year ago so had to do bits and pieces myself but I’m no professional but was skint. The problem I have is the screen he fitted was ok but now is so stiff I think it’s going to rip the profile off the wall. How can I lubricate the hinges or is it a manufactured fault?? And can the screen be lubricated or is it a new screen needed???? I really haven’t a clue but at least I know how to take a screen off/ put one up thanks to you 👍 cheers

Tilers have done an awesome job by the way, is the mastic down to you? Have you seen the new screens with the adjustable screw holes? Great if you are doing a replacement, ScrewFix have them, think it's triton, saves the multiple trips to the van getting drills and shit. Got to say I've bought loads of them drill bits, they are really good quality, be careful if you are drilling porcelain and dipping them in water as it tends to temper them and make them brittle. Pain in the arse when the end snaps off in the hole. Sorry for the lots of questions etc but love the channel it's refreshing to see a plumber posting what it's really like, I've had enough of perfect pipe work etc lol.

Yep this channel is all about the “real world plumbing” side of things…
Mastic is being done by the builder/owner….. he wants it a certain way so leaving him to it….

Does it matter if the wall is plasterboard or not? Or is the process with the red plugs still the same (tiled plasterboard btw)?

  • @tirvplumbing

Please keep them coming for the trainees like me. How to solder, and how to measure out and pull bends in the right place would be marvellous for me. 😊
My first ever paid plumbing job was fitting a screen like this and a medicine cabinet.
Quick question when drilling for the plugs do you stay the same size as usual or go up half a mil or so through the tile. I'm always terrified the tiles will crack putting the screw in if the tip of the plug is too snug if that makes sense. Any thoughts from someone who's drilled thousands more than I have would be appreciated.
    Look forward to these. 👍

You'll probably ever only use 2 types of rawl plugs, red and brown, red is 5.5mm drill bit, brown is 7mm drill bit, perfect every time

I used to silicone the back of profile's but then I had to change a screen a few years later and it ended up braking a load of tiles so I only silicone the holes and the outside now!

    I have a question.
In my case, the bathtub edge, so, where the profile needs to seat , is right on the door wooden frame.
So, I will be drilling into wood to put the screws. Do I still use the plugs? Do I need different screws?
    Your advice is appreciated
    Thanks
