    MORE ABOUT ME
I'm Anne of All Trades. In NASHVILLE, I have a woodworking, blacksmithing and fabrication shop, a selection of furry friends, and an organic farm. Whether you've got the knowledge, tools, time or space to do the things you've always wanted to do, everything is "figureoutable."
I became "Anne of All Trades" out of necessity. With no background in farming or making things, I wanted to learn to raise my own food, fix things when they break and build the things I need.
8 years ago I got my first pet, planted my first seed and picked up my first tool.
My goal is to learn and share traditional techniques and skills while showing my peers how to get from where they are to where they want to go, how to do the things they are passionate about, and what can be done TODAY to engage their own community and grow deep roots.
Whether it's carving spoons, making my own hand tools, restoring my antique truck or growing heirloom tomatoes, the farm and workshop definitely keep me busy and support - whether financially through Patreon, through shopping my affiliate links, through buying merchandise, plans or project videos, or even just liking, commenting, and sharing my content with others helps me GREATLY to keep producing quality content to share.

Bucket on a pole is much easier. Just walk under, bump and dump in the hive box then sit and wait for them to work their way in. NO smoker or sugar or swarm commander needed. Wait until dark and move the hive where you want it, job done.

When bees swarm, @AnneofAllTrades, they lose their mental map of where ‘home’ is - so you don’t need to apply the ‘3 miles’ rule. You can rehouse a swarm right next to the hive it issued from, if you catch it & re-home it within a couple of days of the swarm leaving their ‘mother’ hive - the bees will just re-map to their new home with orientation flights before they really set out to go foraging.
I’m glad you are enjoying your beekeeping & hope it continues to help you get over your previous fears. 😀

Love the video. Hang a swarm trap in that peach tree, and next time, they will install themselves. First year my daughter and son-in-law did this they caught 7 swarms. From all over town.

Nice work! You don't have to keep smoking the tree. If the queen fell on the box they will eventually follow her. It will take them a few min.
Also a warning: I had defensive swarms were almost each bee stung me, so be careful and always wear a suit when you try to get a swarm. I also caught a swarm of my own bees and placed them right next to the mother hive and they are doing great! You are right as yo what they say you should do but bees will always do what they like. 😁 Good luck with your new hive!

I typically save my old nasty frames for swarm traps......when I do find a swarm, I hold one of those old frames to the swarm and they tend to climb right on. makes for a calmer collection. takes a bit longer than a shake....but if there is time.....much simpler.

Just a tip--if you put the drawn-comb frames into the Hive Butler before you shake the bees, they. have a much more comforting trip to their new home. Works great and keeps you all safer from the bees. ;)

I find when in a bush like that it's easier to scoop them gently with your hands, keep scooping them until back to the stems and then smoke the bush thoroughly. Easy to see if you have the queen as they'll just go right back up if you've not got her. Keeps the amount in the air down. They never hang in a convenient place though that's for certain!

Your shake was just fine. It was the location of the box on the first try. The main swarm dropped between the ladder and the box. In other words - the swarm missed the box entirely. All you got was a few outliers.

I live in a 100 year old cottage (one of 4 in a row) and over the past two years we've had problems with first wasps and then bees wanting to set up home in either the roof spaces or chimneys. The wasps needed an exterminator (over 15 separate nests in the cottages) due to the sheer number of wasps and I assisted the exterminator. That was seriously scary. The bees on the other hand were very simple to deal with. We simply lit small fires of damp twigs in the fireplaces and the bees very kindly decided to move on to a new location which the local fruit farms were very happy with.
