As someone who works returns at Home Depot, I agree: buy all sorts of stuff and return what you don’t need. (Just have receipts, your credit/debit card, or pro account number and pay attention to the return window. The returns registers are quite picky about that.)

I grew up around a LOT of artesian wells - very good water, lots of iron where we were.
I suggest that you use the triangle thingy you used for the swales to make your tanks on the same elevation as the well. Use gravity and the artesian pressure to full the tanks automagically with the shutoff floats, and a ball valve for when that area is not in rotation. Then you could use your portable pump to water plants and such when/if needed.
Is there enough flow from the well to run a ram pump? This would require no electricity and they are very reliable.
I’ve got a really sweet system I’m designing for a ram pump. Unfortunately this is at the bottom of the hill, but my friend and I are designing a system with a catch pond at the top of the hill that should be able to utilize the ram pump, but that’s in the 5 year plan and this is a good temporary solution in the meantime :)

Trust me, I say “we” whenever he is actually part of a project, I’m very careful about that. But though I’m sure we would all love to see him out on the farm more often, I for one am very thankful that he loves inside jobs and computer work which means I get more time outside where I love to be, away from the screens and emails ;)

Just subscribed after your battery/gas tool video and this video hits close to home... Our water comes from a converted oil well and I've no idea how far down the plug is. Our Pressure tank and pump controls are inside the converted septic tank/storm shelter and the 1" galvanized line T's off to the barn which is 100 yards downhill from the farm house power and storm shelter/well house... Pressure was great at the barn 20 years ago but has slowed down to a trickle. Which makes watering horses an issue.

Just remember, God doesn't give us challenges without a path to restoration so His plans are still intact in your life. Be thankful it wasn't your fretting hand. I play guitar in my church worship band and have used a thumb pick in the past to try to improve my Travis picking (didn't work) but in your case, it might secure the pick better on your thumb. So on Saturday this was during the summer everyone used to head to the pond with their bar of Ivory soap to wash down wash their hair to get ready for church on Sunday very small community up in New Hampshire as we all went to the same Little White Church in the valley.❤❤

We had a well dug. First attempt was 472 feet that ended in a second cave filled with red clay that nearly sucked in the drill head permanently into the ground. The second attempt ended at 985 feet that included 979 feet of solid stone! …and you hit an artesian well! Wow!!!
You might want to look into Ram Pumps. They are water pumps that do not require electricity. There is a really good channel on CZcams that shows how to make Ram Pumps, using basic plumbing parts. The name of the channel is "Land to House". Hope this helps!

I'm surprised you gave no thought to power when you chose where to drill your well... Also, power at each trough would be nice for freeze-guards in the winter, and heat tape for any lines above ground...

Would it ever make sense to make a water tower at the top of the hill? That way you could have the pump in a stationary position and gravity feed your field at the right location. Could put a flow valve on it too so you could control the amount of water. Also might make it easier on your solar setup. Not trying to sound critical, just generally curious.
The five year plan has a catch pond at the top of the hill and a ram pump. I’m stoked to do dirt work again, it’s been a while since I’ve gotten to play on an excavator.

So happy to see you out and about like this, very upbeat and inspirational. I had some major shoulder surgery at the end of last year and still have problems using my arm which brings me to the never ending horse trailer renovation because my monster horse no longer fit into the slots. I am however going to borrow your idea of the float valve so we can run water to the front and back of the property for the horses. Well done! Do you have access to used IBC totes? Used food grade totes (usually used for syrups) are great for rain water, stock tanks when you cut them down. And cheap! Btw. Sell that artisian water to brewers. Stuff IS gold because it makes a really good product. We rarely get tornadoes in le grand nord blanc but when we do they are some hum dingers! Glad you are safe and sound.
We only have 7 acres but that is still a lot of hoses to run off of 1 well for 6 pens of different animals. Our solution was ibc totes, some hoses and/or PVC cut to length. Then lots of different fittings between hose, nylon, pvc and bulk tank agricultural to attach it all to watering cups they press their nose into to get fresh water for sheep and goats, little cups and nipple drinkers for the birds, a stock tank for cows with a float valve and nipple drinkers for the pigs. It's great to know I can still get water to the animals when the power goes out which happens a lot in hurricane /tornado/thunderstorm prone Florida. Glad you guys were ok after the tornado, those are some scary things! I'll take a hurricane over those any day.

Portable power stations (PPS) are the way to go on a farm. I love being able to load up the fencing supplies and assorted tools, go anywhere and get the job done. Smart move especially in your neck of the woods! Glad you survived that storm

Can you place a water tank on the hill with fill valve? So you can fill the troughs with water by gravity? That way you can reduce the horizontal travel...you can install a pump at the water tank... I'm not sure if it makes sense or not...I thought using the gravity can be beneficial since your field has a hill...
Should look into a ram pump. No electricity needed. It uses head to build pressure by slamming 2 gate valves at 2 intervals. The flow is slow but constant and you can pump water ridiculous distances.

$6k for electricity out to the well.... I assume most of that cost is running a ditch witch.
You should look into dropping your own wooden power poles, then just paying the electrician for the work at both ends.

Water chores were the worst according to my kiddos when our rabbitry and pig area were further away. One of our solutions was like your doing with your hoses except we were too cheap for float valves and the extra water just poured out. One benefit to this in the summer was it gave the pigs a refill on their woller area, and it purged the hot water with cool water in the rabbit water tank. Now it was easier and it simply required the turning of one valve like you have and our well did the rest. But what about being gone for a day or two? Enter the automatic waterer thingy, runs on a batteries and hooked to our faucet. it is basically several solenoids on a timer and we could program it to turn on and off at certain times. For example, we could have the rabbit waterer turn on more often and remove the hot water from the tank to keep them cool. In your case you would simply need to add a separate timer to kick on the water pump and sync the timers up.
We downsized our rabbity and got rid of our pigs before we could implement phase2 which was to use an Arduino and floats to make sure the tanks were full by sending us a text. We had ours ran down the fencerow, at first it was level and it did have a few places it cracked. We then made it to where we could drain it with a slight elevation on it and that kept it from freezing solid during the coldest days.

With your PTFE (plumbing tape), make sure you wrap it the same direction you turn the connector to tighten (clockwise looking into the opening). This ensures that putting the connection on doesn't "loosen" any of the wrapped PTFE.

I think I would have had as much of the pipe running outside the field..sure its fine to drive over but not with a mower! Safer over the fence where I guess your more likely to use a strimmer. Or even better attach it to the fence itself.

You could always use some RV water pumps to pressurize your pipes. A simple solar system should be enough to run the RV water pump. I have a pump in my remote cabin that is capable of 5 GPM @ 55 PSI......it was under $200.....and it turns on and off based on the water pressure.

Anne, you're the best! I have one question and one suggestion-
Question: Was this really cheaper, easier, less work than getting/making a small tanker trailer you could tow out to the troughs with the buggy? I'm envisioning something as simple as an IBC tote on a Harbor Freight utility trailer. Set it up high enough so the water could gravity feed (rapidly) out of the tote. I'm probably missing something, I was just wondering why you went the plumbing route vs the tanker route.
Suggestion: Wrap teflon tape onto the fitting so the tail gets smoothed out as the female part is screwed on. I noticed in one shot that you were wrapping it backwards. This can cause the loose end the get caught and ball up as the connection is being screwed together, leading to leaks... though obviously none of that is critical for a low-pressure outdoor watering setup like this; it's just good practice. Better to learn the lesson outside than have a catastrophe after doing some indoor plumbing!
Short term thinking, no this wasn’t cheaper or easier than an IBC tote, however, this short term solution will also be able to be utilized by the longterm solution, getting a solar water pump, digging a catchment pond at the top of the hill, using a ram pump to automatically run water through the now existing pipes/infrastructure, therefore the short term helps build toward the longterm solution, which ultimately is better in my mind than a temporary solution that might solve things well enough to discourage the making of the longterm solution a priority… if that makes sense ;)
As far as the direction of the tape, you’re 100% correct, however my wrapping it the wrong way is due to dyslexia, not an improper understanding of the correct method. Right and left, clockwise and anti-clockwise are a lifelong struggle for me and no matter how many times I try to get things right, I’m usually only right 50% of the time 😂😂
@@AnneofAllTrades I spent a lot of time working in factory maintenance. A saying I learned that rings true is "there's nothing more permanent than a temporary solution that works." So I 100% understand the rationale for doing the project the way you just explained it.
As for the tape, I wondered if it was a lex-dysic thing. 😉 I'm always amazed by how transparent and vulnerable you are with so many total strangers on the internet. Such bravery is highly admirable!
I wonder if there are any tricks you could use to help with tasks that repeatedly give you issues (like teflon tape). I now work in Lean Six Sigma factory process improvement. One of the tools we use is called poka-yoke (Japanese for error-proof). It's a methodology for setting things up so it would be impossible to make a mistake. You can find all sorts of clever examples with a quick Googling. Most of them seem forehead-slappingly obvious with their simplistic brilliance!
On that note, feel free to reach out if you ever want to talk Lean. There are tons of application opportunities for a situation like yours where you have so many things to do that you can forget which way is up!
Ha! I bet we could talk for hours. Lean thinking, SCRUM, Kanban, etc is how I run my whole life. With my many learning struggles, I've found many helpful principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in those methods. Of course I can easily get carried away building the system and forgetting to do the work... so finding a healthy balance and actually leaning into some of my more innocuous idiosyncrasies instead of being consumed by solving them is always a... balance ;) Though you'll probably be amused to know I've been carrying around a notebook and kitchen timer for the better part of 10 years both as a motivation/awareness tool and as a data collector to look for inefficiencies in my day to day repeated tasks/chores/processes and train my brain to constantly be on the lookout for possible solutions. One of the sillier yet extremely effective solutions I've come to is purchasing used/cheap duplicate tools and literally leaving them in the way, on my way past, around, or through an area that needs a task done so I remember to do the task and, when the right moment strikes to do so, everything I need is already right there, where I need it. It's cost a few extra dollars but saved me a lot of gray hairs. Though I have also, admittedly, accidentally recreated the rake scene from every marx brothers movie on multiple occasions and taken a rake handle to the face tripping over my very useful tool, right in my way, where I'd forgotten I left it ;)

Having the well supply ram pump is a off grid way of moving the water as well. The spillage can be used to fill a tank as well.

I was wondering, what are your thoughts on a water tower? If you had a water tower next to the well you might only need to pump the water to it, and then it could gravity feed the other locations, I don't know the elevations you're dealing with and I don't know if it would be cost effective at this time or ever, just curious if it's something that you've considered.
Look into hydraulic rams! These are pumps that work by the pressure of the water alone (basically you trade volume against pressure). Not sure whether it would make sense in your case, but if you know about it, it might be another tool that could come in handy.

If your grade is correct you could have pipe going from trough to trough with an overflow going to the next one. I saw a farm do that to automatically refill over 5 troughs from a spring and it was freeze proof.
The grade won’t quite work for that but you bet your buns I tried

I definitely wouldn't be trusting that pipe above the freeze line, you might be OK if it was always flowing but if the water is sitting in the winter in the early morning hours I can't see it not freezing. But a small two battery solar system inside a small insulated box could definitely be done so you don't have to be Watergirl anymore.

why not put a large tank up the hill pump the water to that tank. Then gravity feed down the pastures to water trough. then you only have to check the large tank once a week.

I’d love to get an electric UTV, much quieter, but they are also WAY out of our budget.

Can you flow the water through a longer trough making a stream, then place a hydraulic ram in the stream? Hydraulic rams can pump long distance up grade with no electricity.
